Thank you Luke & LMB for a much needed clarification not only for FTTN but also FTTDp & HFC. A lot of elderly people have been treated appallingly by the NBN plan failing to deal with plain old analogue telephones and leaving FTTN, FTTDp & HFC customers at the mercy of a rag tag bunch 180 NBN RSP's with Optus and Telstra being no better. Standard advice if you want to retain multiple phones is install a DECT cordless system or a WIFI phone system but if you want to retain your analogue phones then your house will need to be re-cabled with "smart wiring", all nonsense if and only if the Gateway box supplied by your chosen ISP can support a Ringer Equivalent Number of at least 3 which is the standard Telstra AXE & PABX capability (refer to ACIF S002 & S003 of 2010). Unfortunately the SAGEMCOM devices F@st 5355 supplied by Telstra and the F@st 3864 supplied by Optus do not specifiy any of the analogue phone port parameters let alone their values. Secondly NBN have not mandated a minimum voice standard, currently the entire Telstra network is ITU-T G.711 64kbps 8 bit PCM but with NBN it can be that but most likely G.728/G.729 compressed to 16kbps so FAX machines, medical alerts and burglar alarms systems sending info back to base via voice band modems will not work. It would be so much better even now if NBN mandate G.711 so all the legacy devices will still work.

Good video. You even alluded to reflected waves in stubs (and not in a way that would worry the non-technical). Many people will get away with simply not using extension phones and not having to rewire. I use a cordless phone. The problem comes when the first point is not where they want to place the modem, and they want to use extensions. Then I'm sure your company will be a great help!

Thanks for the video, very informative and better than anything from any of the nbn retailers. If you were in Victoria I would be using your services forthwith, but alas. Like many others I have been given contradictory advice from retailers and it appears the customer has to do all the work and take all the risk without being fully informed.

As Luke does not appear to be active any more I have since ascertained that the blue is active from the road and the white is the loop and the other active blue and the other white go to the extension. As Luke has said they need to be parted and run separately A new wall socket is needed with 2 female plugs and with the modem in my case a filter was used as a splitter as I only had one phone port. The filter/splitter is not recommended by provider who have now told me that a modem with 2 phone outlets is available to avoid using filter/splitter. Not trying to take over but hoping to help other people. Without this site from Luke there is no way I would get what I want. Thank you Luke.

Great video , 1 thing that you did not mention is back to base alarms and central ADSL splitters , if customer has any of these they also have to removed. Always best to get a professional to carry out the work.
@johnpro2847

Cannot have splitters or ADSL filters on the NBN line. One line only back to the junction box with no other outlets or connections .
@johnpro2847
@johnpro2847 5 лет назад
NBN techs do a basic equipment connection which is usually to the first telephone outlet to prevent drop outs and interference from the old telephone wires in the premises. In many instances this is not suitable for the client so you have to pay either Telstra or a cabler to rewire your internal phone wiring.. Unfortunately the NBN call centres and phone call centres often do not mention this until the tech arrives at the door to do the actual installation. This then often causes disputes with the customers.
@johnpro2847
@johnpro2847 5 лет назад
11:34 It would appear that a direct wire connection is still required from say the 3rd or 4th phone outlet back to the outside junction box if you wanted to connect all your NBN equipment to the 3rd or 4th phone jack for example..... Granted, the first phone outlet is the easiest to wire but not always convenient.

yep i just did a phone line delete from old star wiring and my adsl connection went from 3.5mbps to 7.8mbps with less drop outs. Now i have my modem plugged into the phone line straight from the first phone port which is closest to the line in from the pole outside. also changed my phone socket to a rj45 ethernet plug upgraded from 30 year old telecom plate

At 11:46, you said "if this is where we're going to place the modem...". What I would like to know is what you would do if you have FTTN going to a house with legacy bus wiring like that, but Telephone Outlet 1 is a mode 3 emergency dialer socket for a security system (unmonitored, but can use VoIP to call a mobile phone), and TO2 is in the kitchen (best place for phone), and TO3 is the office where the VoIP modem needs to go. Any reason you can't use pair 2 and pair 3 to send VoIP back to TO1 (mode 3) then back to TO2 kitchen for phone?

Will NBN customers require a proper coax line (PayTV/Cable Internet) for the NBN, or is a standard Land Line (Phone/ADSL2) ok? What if a street has a mix of people who may only have Coax...or may only have a Land Line, or maybe even both? Which of these 'copper' services with be used for the NBN?

So, with me being on FTTP, will the NBN up it to beyond the 1GBPS that the fibres are able to produce? because in all honesty, there is no suitable upgrade path due to the fibres being used by multiple homes, let's say that 1 fibre is easily able to give a entire street 100Mbps quite easily but to upgrade those indevidual premises it would take twice as much work because they not only had to figure out who's home was on the other end of the rotten copper, but now they have to figure out which fiber connection it is and so forth. NBN makes no sense and with many people saying "it's a waste of my tax money"are BS artists, NBNco are a for profit company with a loan, they are not the defence force where they sit there, research and look good on paper while spending our money
@jay-uo2bi
@jay-uo2bi 3 года назад
Speeds depend on many things. NBN currently use GPON (gigabit PON) which can already provide gigabit to homes depending on how many times they user splitters to split of the fibre connection. Eventually the GPON will be upgrade to XGS-PON (10 gigabit PON) or even 25G, 50G, 100G PON. Fibre itself is extremely far off its limits, the equipment is improving over tim.

Thank you for the video. After weeks of searching the internet and numerous telephone calls to Telstra and NBN which resulted in every advice being contradicted by the next opinion and the consensus is I get the phone to the first connection only. I have the following questions if you can assist. 1. In your video with installing a second socket to loop back too, could you advise if this fitting is the same as the old one? 2.When you loop back to the new connection is there another out for the phone in the kitchen. 3. Have you got any connection to firms in Townsville that you could suggest? 4 My main problem is that the first point of entry in the kitchen has no power point and if i get an electrician to cut into the wire for the dishwasher or garbage disposal I could have the power point under the breakfast bar but NBN says too much electrical interference but they would not be on if on the phone. 5. I am told no battery back up with this technology. Is this true? 6. Can I have priority etc. with FTTN. Once again Thank you as I can see a light at the end of the tunnel as I thouht cordless would be the only answer. I have Telstra T10005 phones and Telstra says they will not work but I have a friend who just has the NBN box installed and says he is using the old Telstra phone.
@lmbindustriesptyltd7597

Hi Barry, 1. It is recommended that this connection be an RJ45. 2. I need further clarification to be able to answer that one. To take a guess, if your modem is at the first outlet in the house, once the separation of the internal cabling is complete and all the other outlets in the house are connected to the phone port on the modem, they will all work. 3. Sorry mate, I do not. I am considering building a referral network across the country though so if you come across a good one, please let me know. 4. Too much interference can cause issues with your modem, especially your WiFi network so it is advisable to keep it away from kitchen appliances. 5. There is a large bank of batteries in the bottom of each node to keep the nodes operating in the event of a power outage. This will not, however, power your equipment inside your house. So if the power at your house goes out and your modem isn't backed up with a UPS, then you will lose the internet and your phone. 6. Again I need further clarification to be able to answer this one. I am still yet to come across a phone we haven't been able to get to work with the system I covered in this video.
@johnpro2847
@johnpro2847 5 лет назад
You must have one line only back to the junction box with no other outlets or connections attached Often your preferred outlet has to be rewired by a cabler before NBN installs their equipment. Telstra will do this for about $200

Gosh, I wish I had seen your vid before this week as what you describe is exactly the position we find ourselves in now (Jul 2018). I think the Telstra man deliberately made it look like a major problem and now our dect phone base is in my computer room, the office fax doesn't work and the old wall phone - which has the best 'bell', are all dead. I think we'll just get a 4 handset radio phone, but the fax remains an issue. We had to shell out $400 to upgrade our alarm to gsm. They don't tell you about these things! A quick question (you'll be quicker than Telstra) - the smartmodem has 2 vopi ports. Are they both on the same number? Meaning, if I connect the radio base to one vopi port and say the old wall phone to the other port, will a call for my landline number activate both ports? Gopefully, it will! Thanks again!

@HappyfoxBiz
@HappyfoxBiz 6 лет назад
no, if you are having issues with the lines inside your home, you may have them replaced from the drop point into your home. But most times if your home was built within 20 years you should have 4 wires coming into your home and that should be enough for the VDSL2+ to work to reasonable efficiency (80Mbit/s)

My house is either 350m or 1km from the node & pillar depending on if you follow the streets or draw a straight line. I want to ask, what do you think my FTTN speed will be and is there anything I can do to get a better connection speed?
@sammykalintosh5630
@sammykalintosh5630 6 лет назад
@ 350m, your internet speed will be between 30-70mbps depending on the condition of the copper wires. @ 1km, your speeds will be between 10-22mbps depending on your wiring. The good news is that NBN has enabled vectoring in some lines. This will enable you to get over 100mbps @ 350m & over 42mbps @ 1km

Great video, So if you are wanting to connect your modem into, say your second or third outlet in your home, with the first outlet you'd just run a new lead from the last one to the first?
@lmbindustriesptyltd7597
@lmbindustriesptyltd7597 8 лет назад
If you are using the second or third outlet in your house for the modem and want the phones to work at the first or second outlet you will still require your wiring to be reconfigured. In most cases, this can be done using the second pair in your phone cables to route the incoming line from the street to the point where you want the modem and then routing the phone signal back through all the other outlets. So your modem doesn't need to be physically connected to the point where your phone cable first arrives in your house, but the wiring will need to be changed to reflect this.

I don't think it is a good idea to use one pair for the vdsl signal, and then use the second pair of the same cable as the phone pair. Surely this would impact on the vdsl signal - interference, X talk etc. Would it not be better to run a completely new cable for the phone only? Mine is a star topography, and no way would I do what you suggest. I use a cordless phone with base stn connected to my NBN modem/router phone port.
@lukebaker1888
@lukebaker1888 7 лет назад
It is always better to run a separate cable for any situation however, this is not viable in a lot of cases. The cross talk and interference is going to be too minimal to cause any issue over the distances we are talking about. With a partial migration, your exchange phone line is run on the same pair as your VDSL signal for up to 800m with no problems. If you are concerned still you could always use a high pass filter.

Luke I posted problems about 7 weeks ago and tried to ring the phone to speak to you to no avail. Still waiting for a Telstra tech to arrive after 5 attempts. Rang a few cablers who do not know what I am talking about despite telling them of your site. M;y wiring shows 2 blue wires and 2 white wires so I presume blue would be the active incoming and the white would be where the wires are then run to the bedroom extension. Would this be correct as I can see I may have to tell some body to disconnect the white wires and then run these white wires to a splitter coming out of the modem. Have you been away and can I ring you about this?
@lmbindustriesptyltd7597
@lmbindustriesptyltd7597 7 лет назад
Hi Barry, Again sorry for the delay in replying and being out of touch. I have been having my own Telstra issues which have been causing me some really big headaches. Please feel free to get in touch again now. From the sounds of it you are attempting a bit of cabling yourself which is not recommended at all. In saying that each cable has a pair connected to your socket composing a white and a blue wire. The white and the blue wire from the street need to connect to the modem and the white and the blue wire to the rest of your house need to connect to the phone port on your modem.
@martindekker8203
@martindekker8203 7 лет назад
If you've got 2 blue wires and 2 white wires on a socket it means this phone socket has another socket jumped to it in parellel. Blue and White is one pair and the other Blue and White is another pair running to anothe phone socket. You will need to determine which of these two pairs of wires run to. Unfortunately you'll need a multimeter to determine were they go or a tone meter.

Poor man's fiber. Basically they put fiber to your neighborhood and reuse existing telephone cables to give you internet via vDSL. It's possible to wire up fiber from the node to your house but they figured going from ~ 10 mbps to 1 gbps is a too big of a jump and they want to milk you for for all the money the companies can.

Most of the slow speed issues are actually caused by the ISP's having highly congested networks. There is only one ISP I trust to have the least congested network and all my clients who have switched have been more than happy. Let me know if you would like me to connect you to them.
@johnpro2847
@johnpro2847 5 лет назад
Drop outs and other issues can also be caused by not removing all the old phone cabling off the NBN line in your house/apartment. You must have one direct line only back to the junction box which is often on an external wall and is coloured grey.

@lmbindustriesptyltd7597
@lmbindustriesptyltd7597 7 лет назад
Agreed mate. The biggest problem with the NBN is the fact that the business model forces ISP's to have highly congested networks. This is why people experience slow connection. Most of the time it has nothing to do with the technology and everything to do with the ISP's having over congested networks. There is only one NBN provider that I trust to have the least congestion so if you want to connect up with them let me know.

OK an update after my initial assessment that wasn't too favorable things have stabilized but still only marginally faster than our original ADSL2+ , BUT it does not load down as much Bare in mind that we are NOT in suburbia either. Our cabling in the house all originates from a single point in my office where the Original Phone DSL line with multi point sockets that I installed so they ran to the Cordless Base unit and the fixed Phone in the Bedroom. Connection was remarkable simple that IMHO blind Freddie could have done it . Steps DSL Line from ADSL filter unplugged from Filter and inserted into the grey DSL Socket NBN Mod All and I mean ALL Phone line originating point (Due to Filter :) ) along with it's double adapter that feeds my FAX were plugged into the Green Phone socket Yellow CAT 5 from Yellow LAN Socket plugged into my Linksys router WAN port and then both NBN and Router rebooted simultaneously. Our connection was remarkably simple . But that is likely because I am familiar with networking and had previously connected to the NBN Modem and set it up to mimic our original ADSL Modem with DHCP and swapped subnet masks and so on. Now the system have been active the slow speeds we were getting seem to have stabilized, seldom slower than 15Mbps Down where the same load would have dropped the ADSL2+ to around 5-6 Mbps if that.

Dave30867 maybe because people don't have a small one level house. Try hearing the phone from downstairs at the back of the house while you're upstairs at the front

A lot of my clients are elderly people and aren't interested in new technologies or cordless phones.

Is the wiring inside your premises correct ...other outlets or connections to the NBN line are a no no.
