Oh man, I was both so ready for this review and not entirely ready. Also, I kept on misunderstanding your references to Sam Pink as being P!nk the singer, which is a very different vibe.

I'm in mourning for your time and money. But from my perspective, I think it was well spent as it's resulted in this epic review!

Hiya. I like your style (I also liked the book very much, so maybe I am not someone to be trusted) - yet, I just wanted to say that (being European and lazy) the Philly map gave my reading a further dimension and I enjoyed perusing it

Just gave up 130 pages in. I really wanted it to be good. For me, another difference between Fuccboi and Who They Was is I never once doubted Snoopz' authority on his gangsta subject matter, whereas when Fuccboi's narrator covers anything slightly edgey I feel like I'm listening to a mate's little brother trying to impress me with made up anecdotes

I came for the review, I exit with sage writing advice/warning: if you write it, Kieran _could_ read a passage ALOUD! 😂 I doubt there would have been an essay if Conroe had acknowledged/claimed Pink as a mentor. The issue is that under represented writers are being ignored because “affluenza” is still dictating the publishing industry. We get thought provoking gems like this as a result. Conroe was paid for THOSE words! 🙃

I’ve been waiting to see this book get shat on. You’re the first I found. Subbed. I cringed at Pink’s response. Although I think the whole concept of intellectual property is...odd. And our copyright law is pretty fucked. Pink should’ve just allowed Thor to dig his own hipster grave

Really limp take on the Sam pink debacle dude. Read his essay again (also weirdly condescending toward him for calling it an essay chill out). Pink illustrates how Conroe over borrowed from the mode and narrative framing that Pink, in his scene of 2010's alt-lit made his own. Other writers of that ilk, Big Bruiser Dope Boy are on record as saying they glide in Pink's slipstream (as in Conroe) but what disappointed Pink was how Conroe, someone who gets an elite education, is sapped up by the big five publishing mothership because he's what execs can see to market in a mainstream audience for a really crappy, try hard novel begging on each page to be the pivotal entry to contemporary letters. To say it's jealously implies a certain pettiness on Pink's part which I don't think is fair. It's an unjust thing that happened. You'd be pissed off too seeing the spoilt strutting to the top after hefty gravity boost from the work you've spent years in obscurity perfecting.

Pink was more influenced by Noah Cicero than Spanbauer, just saying.
