@Aaronbir Osahan That's not overreacting. Every mother back then would react the same way if they'd found out their 9 year old son had said 'fuck'. Swearing was a lot more serious back then, and indeed, 'fuck' was the 'mother of dirty words'. Given how young Ralph is, i bet there are some that would react the same way nowadays as well.
1:31 I love the way the Old Man cracks a smile when Ralphie is not looking. He's gotta lay down the law as a parent, but he's also thinking "That's my boy."
The moms reaction tho!!!! It was like she was getting ready to have a heart attack! AHHH RALPHIE!! Ralphie is like taking off his glasses like oh I am getting ready to get in trouble I don't wanna see my punishment clearly!!😆😆😆😆😆
That moment where he irritatedly tells Ralphie how to hold the hubcap is EXACTLY how my dad would act -- NEVER helped him change a tire before & he expected me to know what HE was doing! XD
It's a brilliant touch by McGavin - the parent KNOWS it's not a big deal, but he has to parent. And it contrasts nicely to Ralphie's feeling that it's the end of the world.
As a kid, I didn't understand what Ralphie actually said! I just knew that he got in big trouble for it! When I rewatched it as an adult, I finally understood what "fudge" really was! Apparently, no one said that word in our household when I was growing up, so that was why it went over my head.
I am shocked that the old man was shocked that he said it. I mean if he says it as often as he does, shouldn't he have gone "Oh whoops...yeah, uh, Ralphie, you shouldn't say that. Sorry you heard me use it".
When I watched this as a kid I never knew that the dad speaks gibberish every time he's swearing, like when he's yelling at the dogs it's all gibberish. Such a great way to edit the swearing out.
I always thought it was funny how the Old Man was able to take the old tire off, put the replacement on, and search for all the lug nuts in the dark in the time it took for Ralphie to get back in the car.
In that time period, parents never believed their children of they blamed something on one of them. It was considered disrespectful and disobedient behavior.
This isn't 1934 godzilla. Kids are not NOT property or slaves. Parents are not above the law. They are to set the right example, and hold themselves accountable if they fail
The way he smiles at himself once Ralphie is out of sight implies that while he's shocked to hear his own son use that word, he knows he's rubbing off on him. Happens even more later on when Ralphie finally fights back against Farkus.
I never understood WHY he did not just tell his mother he heard the word from his father, I mean he says he chickened out but still I never quite got why he did not just tell her the truth and instead gets his friend in trouble over nothing.
He probably didn't want to inspire any hatred between his parents right before the holiday. If he told her it was his father, she would've screamed at him, he probably would've slept on the couch for a few nights, all right before christmas. Keep your eyes on the prize, Schwartz wasn't worth a Red Ryder Carbine Action Two Hundred Shot Range Model Air Rifle. Maybe his dad bought him the air rifle as a way of saying "Thanks for not squealing on me, bucko."
Now many people would wonder why the mom would overreact to Ralphie saying fuck. Don't get me wrong, a swearing kid is bad, but there's more to it than just that. This took place in the early 40s. Gone With The Wind was in theaters at that time and many people back then were still aghast at the use of the word Damn being spoken in a public theater. So if Damn could give them that reaction. Fuck would give a worse one naturally back then.
Why was the father looking at Ralphie with anger from 0:53-0:56 since Ralphie didn't cause the nuts to fly away where the father knocked it out of his hands at 0:49?
I guess that's sometimes true. But of course, the parents can't always blame their kids especially since it was the father's fault which he knew that he was the one who knocked the tray of nuts out of Ralphie's hands. Perhaps that was the reason Ralphie said the F---word since the father was looking at him like it was his (Ralphie's) fault.
+afriendofbean Even though Dad was the one who knocked it out of Ralphie's hands, Ralphie still would've been blamed for it because (in Dad's eyes) he didn't hold onto the bowl of nuts tighter.
MermaidRam Probably even if Ralphie held the bowl of nuts very tightly, the bowl still would have flew out of his hands since the dad swung his hand upward in a very fast way hitting the bottom of the bowl with so much force even if Ralphie held the bowl very tightly since Ralphie was probably in a weak position sitting on his knees especially since the dad told him to squat down from 0:21-0:22.
Of course not - not for a Christmas movie. Any Christmas movie worth it's weight in salt, won't use any profanity, sexual enuendos, political issues or anything of the kind.
Were Ralphie's parents angry at him because on the inside he said the F--- word while saying fudge on the outside or, were they angry at him because they were surprised he knew a bad curse word not knowing how he learned it?
OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Fu................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................ ck *savage*
And a bah humbug to you, too, Scrooge. Ralphie's parents are just people- good people, not perfect, but they clearly love their kids and do their best. They're not hypocrites, and judging by the Old Man's Major Award, they're not puritans- and with as easy as they go on Ralphie for harmless kid stuff, they're not authoritarians, either.
Vosian Hypocritical - swearing Puritanical - "You'll put your eye out", fear of blaming dad Authoritarian - Mouth Soap These aren't as severe as your traditional authoritarian practices, but there you are. Like I said... the last days.
Ricardo Martin Lord, if using soap is "authoritarian" I shudder to think how much you would spoil your own children. And how is "you'll shoot your eye out" puritanical? She's scared for his safety because a BB gun IS a dangerous toy- in fact, do you even KNOW what puritanical means?
Jesus man, “fuck” is only curse word if you make it a “curse word” Maybe it’s me, I curse and get away with it 😅 - Also Ralphie could’ve lied and not sell out his friend , like he learned fuck from one of his radio shows. Like me, learned cursing, “ South Park” 😂😂😂😂😂 Only around friends I cursed, till became a teen and by then, could only swear as figurative speech, not “ Fuck you” dad
