The fuel pressure relief valve - also known as the fuel pressure regulator on a common rail diesel engine - can become a weak link on a performance-tuned Duramax or Cummins.
The valve dissipates fuel pressure to prevent overloading the fuel system. After some time, the valve weakens and may drop fuel pressure when it's not needed and cause a host of problems. A weak valve can trigger engine codes P0087 or P1093. It may also be responsible for excessive smoke, poor driveability, poor mileage and a loss of power.

Put this on my 07.5 LMM holy crap this made a big difference in how my truck ran!!! It even shifter better!!! I did however crack a rib getting it loose so I believe Sasquatch put mine on! 😂 but I’m good now

I just replaced this valve in my '07 LBZ at 114,000 miles and before the codes had a chance to appear - preventative maintenance pays... Thanks!

Used a regular 18mm Craftsman wrench. Used the boxed end on the wrench. Tapped on the open end of the wrench with a brass hammer. Tap tap tap until it came loose. Installed plug same way. Tightened by hand as much as I could, then tapped it over a quarter turn with the brass hammer.

I have a cummins 6.7 and had this issue on my truck. Took it to a mechanic here and told him that I don't have power when towing my 5th wheel and check engine light comes on. When driving without my trailer the light disappears after a while and i can go 70-80 mph. Hook up my trailer i can't go faster then 50-60 mph. He counted figurer out what was wrong. After watching this video i decided to pay the $40 with shipping and order this and replace it. Its been 2 weeks now and I'm hauling my trailer with no problem and its running well. Thanks guys.

I had a 6.7 Cummins in the shop that ran away on the owner from oil in the intercooler after he replaced his failed turbo. He had installed a rail plug at the same time. Turned key off, Injectors turned off but engine running at 5-6k rpm and no where for the fuel pressure to go. Yeah bad combo, blew the pintle out of the ends of 4 injectors and cracked the tip of the other two nozzles! I install these plugs and believe they are safe 90% of the time but beware that if your truck engine were to run away and the injectors are off they will be destroyed and so will your cylinders. I have seen and heard of lots of engines having run away following turbo failures when the intercooler doesn’t get cleaned/drained/replaced. (Not under my care). Generally they shut back down after a minute or so and the engine survives. Point is in the case of my one customer the factory relief valve would have been the difference between a 60k mile motor living on instead of catastrophic failure.

Got a customer that installed that plug on his truck due to the P0087, he cleared the code with his tuner... Light came back on.... P0087. Woohoo!

Yep, used one on my cummins and blew the top off one of my injectors.filled the motor with fuel. I was towing at night and in the rain and never knew it happened until my idiot light was going off and I looked and had no oil pressure. The oil was floating on the fuel and blew out the breather. Good thing, no hydro lock and motor is still ok. Reinstalled stock valve. Be aware. They are there for a reason!

so my question is i drive my truck daily and mine just did this so i parked it and i believe this is the issue but if i put one without the release valve like yours don't i risk my injectors getting over pressured and blowing up? also does my fuel economy go down because it blocks the extra fuel going back to the tank or does it not block that?

I have a Volkswagen Touareg 3.0TDI with a cp4. I occasionally get a p0087 code & the truck starts to surge. It'll smooth out on its own after about 20 seconds or if I tap the throttle. Would this be the relief valve or the regulator valve on the cp4 pump?

I know this is an older video, but I did this fuel rail plug. And than I bought a ppe ported fuel rail fitting. And that ported fuel rail fitting leaked fuel like crazy(while I was on a trip with my fifth wheel camper). Luckily i swapped my stock fitting back in, but I’ll still get that low rail pressure code if I horse on a high tune. Did I do something wrong or should i drill my stock one out(ppe fitting has 3 or 4 threads showing)

Lots of questions about LMLs I have 2015, same problem, but cant find any videos It's on the front of rail drivers side The back port is a sensor, the front is valve I cant find anything on how to get in there, may have to take EGR off

Im seeing slightly low rail pressure at WOT truck always only makes 21k or a hair more but is demanding more. Has no problem getting to that 21k. Do you think my PPE rail plug not being torqued hard enough could cause this? I was not the one to install. Truck makes the same rail pressure on each tune and still has plenty of power. What gives

Why does this not apply to lb7? I just had my stock bosch injectors replaced and they said they were going to do this part as well and im pretty sure it shows on my invoice

Lb7. Zf 6speed. Is it a more tense scenario? Multiple revs up and abruptly down again at full throttle. In rapid succession. Maybe the sprung version of the plug is more desirable??

I have a 2007 classic 6.6 Duramax Chevy Silverado and I've had this code show up while towing my 25 foot Pro-Line boat will this help and will it damage my stock engine. it had only thrown the code and went into limp mode when pulling the boat up a steep hill or Mountain.

Hey Guys, I have a 2006 Duramax LBZ motor with a bad fuel issue. I can drive down the road and the engine will just cut off. It’s like the fuel pump loses signal and the engine will just stop running. I put it in park, turn the key off and restart the truck and its like it never happen until it does it again??? Lately I have been getting a 0088 code fuel rail too much pressure code and I will clear it and it goes away for a while, but it resurfaces. Can you let me know what the problem is?? Could it be the sensor in this segment??? I want to know before I have to take it to the dealership and pay an arm and a leg!!! Thanks!!!

I have a stock LBZ engine No tuner. do not have any fuel rail code or pressure codes. Will replacing fuel pressure relief valve do any damage? Will it improve drivability?

Is the relief valve an issue with LML models, I'm getting ready to do a full delete and I don't want to create any issues with the added power. Granted I'm guessing around 200 horse and 400 lbs of torque increase, but like everyone else I'm looking for better economy and reliability as well.

Will this solve a p0191 code? I got perfect fuel pressure on my scan tool. Does this work with the LML rails? I had this code before I did the cp3 conversion and a fass lift pump. My cp4 didn’t have any metal and never had an issue with it. I only didn’t the cp3 conversion for a peace of mind.

Thanks for the video. I'm new to the diesel world and have been stressing a lot about putting this plug in my truck. It's a stock 5.9 cummins. The price of the valve is nuts compared to this plug. I was worried a lot about damaging my brand new injectors but your video has put my mind at ease a lot. Cheers from Canada.

2011 uses an electronic relief valve. It's a pretty robust design unless debris goes through it (in which case you've got bigger problems).

No, but there are a multitude of other fuel starvation points that could. Log rail pressure vs desired rail to determine if it's fuel system related.

Lb7 has no rail pressure relief valve. Check air filter, check for boost leaks, check your turbo wastegate, if all are good, check your injector balance rates. You'll find your answer fairly quick.

I have an 06 3500. I get a ticking noise for a couple seconds then truck blows white smoke then it goes away. Could this relief valve cause this to happen if it's bad

I watched some videos on these and couple places said that they have seen nuts and fittings blown apart when you let off the throttle. I have a stock 05 lly, I don't have any codes yet but thinking the spring in my rail plug might be weak. Would this be a good idea for my engine since it still runs on the stock tune? Only thing I have done is install a fass95 pump and s&b cold air intake system.

I have a P0088 and my rail pressure bounces. I run a sump to airdog 200 and I replaced the fuel pressure regulator but still has high psi on start up and the drivability is here and there until eot is normal. She also bouces at idle from 5-10k psi on the rail.

It was my pump going out. I fixed it by replacing all my injectors, tubes, and installing a rail plug and 12mm injection pump. She doesnt see below 14psi. I have an inline psi guage before my injection pump and my mm3 shows my rail pressure.

Put the plug in my ‘11 cummins. It did away with the ‘burping’ after pedaling under load. So far so good. Had to remove intake horn, took about 1hr. $10 part ***quick update: I spoke too soon, still having the issue. I will reach out to CPS once more.

Just had a issue today. Had to get on it hard to get out into traffic. Let off at the next light to turn truck shut off cranks but no start. Basically bone stock 05 LLY changed filter and water sensor now is it possible this is the problem.

What about the risk of blowing off the injector tips because now you have no way to vent the pressure which is how the system was designed?

pretty sure i need this. i have an 05 lly bought in march. to the best of my knowledge its still completely stock. but gets 20-24mpg highway and 18-19 in town. twice now ive had where i was stepping on it going up hills and it throws the fuel rail pressure code. only up hill for some reason. then it limits itself to 65mph until i pull over and turn off. this last time was going onto on ramp and had two semis in the other lane not letting me over so 0-70 by the time i hit the top and i could feel the truck slow to 65mph

+trevor randles First replace the fuel filter, if that does not stop the P0087 code then you might need this plug. It is only $50 and takes about 30 minutes to install. My 07 Classic LBZ reached a point where it would throw a P0087 at anything over half throttle. Installing the fuel rail plug cleared up the problem instantly.

not sure if this thread is still active.. I have a 2005 lly engine code "2" my truck will go into limp mode and not let me go above 65.. and damn near nothing with my 5th wheel. New fuel filter. It never throws any codes though?? I was thinking of doing the FPR but maybe this is what I need? or both? truck is completely stock.

This part is impossible to remove. The company that made it was so cheap they couldn't let the threads stick out just a few more mm. I'm considering removing the entire fuel rail just to get to this part.

What could cause similar issues to this on a LB7? Got my LB7 tuned and it ran great for 2 weeks, now it keeps throwing a P1093 code and the fuel pressure drops significantly WOT. The second I let off the throttle the fuel pressure jumps up to where it should be. When I give it half throttle it runs as it should

I have a 03 LB7 with a Fass 100 lift pump on a new motor with 1200 miles since dropped in.Motor shuts off no codes.Cranks right back up.Any clue

My MP8 mack/volvo engine which is a 535hp engine and it is having boost issues, flat out getting to 200kpa then outta the blue it will boost at 260 and runs like a dream,if I stop or slow down it will drop out and go back to 200kpa. Could be the issue

Better than putting a plug on is putting a single stage relief with high pressure release so you still keep a safety for fuel pressure. New BOSCH rail pressure relief valve modified for single stage operation. This valve corrects a common issue of rail pressure fluctuations and drive-ability issues inherent with the stock valve. In stock form the valve is a dual stage design, where once the valve opens due to system over pressurization it remains held open until the pressure lowers below the second valve stage. Typically the opening pressure is around 220 MPA or 2200 Bar, and the second stage holds the valve open until the pressure falls below approximately 65 MPA or 650 Bar. Once modified to single stage operation the valve will then regulate pressure at a constant single setting. We offer these valves set to various opening pressures ranging from 180-210 MPA (application dependent).

04 LOT I have an issue. P0700 and U0101 loss of communication with TCM to ECM. Symptoms are: when driving going into 4th gear its like it skips a gear or goes into limp mode but pulls out in five seconds and shifting is good until going back through the gears. Checked pins on TCM checked grounds I could find. Replaced input speed sensor to trans. Replaced NSBU module......Does ANYONE have an idea on why this is happening?? I'm stumped, research online shows little like I'm the only person with this issue. 🤕 please help I can't bring myself to take it to a dealer. Have taken it to 2 diesel shops where I know the guys and a recommended trans shop. Very helpful but all shoulders on what the issue is...

Try replacing the TCM with new unit. It will require a flash from a tech2 scanner to work. This fixed my code p0700 issue.

Today I got the p0087 while towing and forcing the truck abit uphill and truck went into limp mode, is there any risk on replacing stock valve with this? I drive a 2012 ram 3500 6.7 full stock.

Daniel had the same exact thing with mine. 2011 ram 3500 after I deleted! Had p0606 on key code read and 0087 on a scanner. Shimmed the stock plug and no issues since. Would happen pulling 40 foot horse trailer merging on to on ramps or going up hill at a slower speed then having to ask for more going up! Til i figured it out if I pulled over and shut truck off and did the key trick to read and reset codes light would stay on but regained power. Light would go away when I unhooked from the trailer and drove a minute. Was really frustrating and annoying

Yes but it is in the function block with the pressure sensor and not in one of the rails

Especially considering duramax engines have always (since introduced) used CP3's which have, a fuel pressure regulator, and further downstream a fuel pressure relief valve. These guys seem to shoot towards the more uninformed crowd, but bad information is dangerous in its own right

Is there a number I can call to speak to a technician? I've got an issue that just started tonight, I had efilive installed Friday night on my 2004.5 Chevy LLY, I got to 60 mph at about %60 throttle and then my truck shut off completely. I pulled over, primed it several times and will not crank. Filled the tank up primed primed primed again and nothing. Any ideas?

I'm having fuel pressure loss when my lmm sits and I have 2 prime it. Could this valve be the problem? I'm getting no codes

rootedflunky1 no that is caused by your fuel filter housing. You just need to rebuild it. It’s like 20 bucks comes with new spring seal and brass fitting.

rootedflunky1 same thing happen to me about 2 months ago. I rebuild the fuel housing out on my drive way and it was missing one of the o-rings in there. Didn't even have to take it completely off my lmm let it hang and put back with new seals and bam! Running like a champ.

Sergio Flex5 ...... I replaced the water separator sensor and that fixed my problem... Thankfully I didn't have 2 rebuild the housing.

I had same problem a couple of years ago, leaking around primer, also wires were broken for the heater on the top of the filter housing. Could not repair wires , ordered a new housing from dealership and problem solved.

This DOES NOT apply to an LB7. There is no fuel pressure relief valve on an LB7. For the Duramax trucks that have the relief valve, I saw 74 ft. lbs. somewhere for this little guy! Just crank it on there like the good men at Calibrated Performance said to.

My valve will NOT come out !! I bought the replacement plug from you guys. I may have to take off my fuel rail. This thing is on like the world depended on it. Any advise ? I have NOT stripped the valve in there YET. I can't get to it at a great angle to get the job done.

To avoid it slipping off stick a 3/8 extension between back of wrench and mounting bracket then get nasty with it

Questions guys! I'm getting the code "fuel pressure release valve activated" but it only comes on when I'm sitting not while driving at all. And I'm getting none of them symtems you mentioned so have no idea what the problem is my car is 1.4 tfsi stage 1 remap
