That's what made Fugazi as special as they are: they were willing to engage people, as people. Not as rock stars with an audience of admirers. They had the balls to want this and accept all consequences. Ironically, that's precisely what made them *more* than rock stars. It makes them bona fide role models.
Beautifully said. The hardcore scene still is giving back to me to this day. It shaped me as a person! I’m 40 now with kids so don’t get to do as many shows but I try my best to give back to this wonderful ethos!!!!!
SO fucking rad. Never sold out. What band handles their own Shit? Really. Love all the boi's in the crowd too... We blame here for being there. We're all here. We're all guilty--giving me the chills
The dude bit Guy. Apparently the people in these comments have never played a show? When someone does something strange like that, and he then gets up and it looks like he's approaching the guy he bit AGAIN, YOU attempt to block him, who knows what he'll do? Ian was in the middle of the song and did the best he could. Trying to keep your bandmates safe is far from selling out.
I had always viewed guy as extraneous, not really vital to Fugazi. Now, my thinking is what the fuck do I really know, anyway? None of my business. Guy Pic showed an immense amount of self-restraint in that situation. Instead of acting out, and he would have been justified, on that charged, adrenaline-filled stage, that idiot got lucky/was shown kindness.
@@DamianLoved I think he was an excellent hypeman who eventually picked up a guitar and started adding something musically as well as aesthetically. The image of him and his Rickenbacker and Ian and his guitar is fairly iconic and Guy added a LOT to the live shows especially on tracks like Glueman.
@@DamianLoved Nah, it wasn't shitty to me. It was a legitimate opinion not expressed like an a-hole. lol I can totally see why some folks would be like "what does he even do?"
The difference between straight edge people and people who like a nice relaxing beer, is that people who like a nice relaxing beer are nice relaxed people, whereas straight edgers always have a fucking stick up their arse.
Whats great is not just the way Ian handled it, it was the way they just got back into the song, There was no "We'll have to start over," they just got right back into it. Amazing. The band members have always stated they knew the set so well that only the slightest movement from any member would be the signal to start another song. Never made a set list just played the songs, true musicians.
There were a few instances where people got seriously injured, one guy in California sued a venue and promoter after injuring himself at a Fugazi show after diving from a speaker stack which causedthe band to not be able to get insurance in the state of California for some of their shows. Because of the rising costs of insurance at venues (due to these injuries), the band had a hard time keeping the prices down to $5.
Yes. I was at that show... it was one of the most intense concerts i saw. Amazing Band, felt like a big family. And that idiot... yes ian was polite as can be. I would have understood if he punched him. Great guy
It's amazing that they move back into the song after the amp is knocked over. It was really cool to see Ian's hand signals to the rest of the band to keep repeating the same lines. I love that Fugazi is like a jam band.
Rough mix, but damn, what a scene. When drunk ass knocked over Ian's amp, I just about shit, but dude (Ian) was nothing less than a total gentleman and professional about it. Sure, Ian and Co. probably never expected anyone to be calm and collected at their shows, but you got to draw the line somewhere.
Why people mess with Ian? Remember at the Paladium when some idiot hit him in the face with a shoe? It was like 20 minutes before they started playing again.
Ciaran O Sullivan He still plays music though. He's in The Evens. That's sure as hell not helping his tinnitus, so they could reform yet. Ian has said in the past few years that he misses playing with Guy, Brendan and Joe. Besides, Joe and Brendan are now playing together in The Messthetics, so that makes it more likely now IMO.
Fugazi were a product of their time, no way they can exist today it would go against what they stand for. Let’s be honest a reunion show for $5? No way
I love how well it fits with the song. The conflicting self-expressions."What it is to be a man" isn't a criticism of some other "macho" guys, but of stage-diving too ... cool stuff
I hve had quite many moments of idiocy on and around the stage over the years and its very very hard to not knock someone out in cases like this I really think my headstock would have knocked out his teeth, I think its about law suits more than anything else, kid should consider himself lucky. Very lucky, if the fans didnt take care of him that is...
@ukusapillage it's funny though, cos their music sound awesome on weed ha! it sounds like a hectic king crimson, of all bands.. there was an ad in MRR back in the eraly 90's: a desk, a few straight-edge albums, and a hand rolling a joint ha.. can´t remember the name of the company advertising, but it's something i would certainly hang as a poster on my walls, even today! all that hidden libido comes alive when fugazi plugs in, no doubt! i raise my whisky glass to this band.
Unbelievable. I can't believe the stupid audience caught and carried his ass! In DC they would've parted the sea and let his ass hit the floor. He would've got no respect! Ian just shakes his head cuz he can't believe it either!
@unARTigNYC Ian didn't see the guy get up and walk behind him. Fugazi are one of a kind. Most bands would insist on the guy getting thrown back in straight away. Wonder how the crowd would react if the amp got fucked?
I really respect Fugazi's take prisoners approach. Saying HEY. As someone (Ian) who started all this....I'm telling you this stupid sjit isn't ok. It's what gives our types a bad name. Stop ruining what we worked so hard for you to enjoy.
@unARTigNYC But Ian has stated that people have lost the ability to walk as a result of stage dives at shows that he personally played, and like he said at the end "maybe it is our stage" he didnt say maybe it is "your stage," because the kid was right, it was their stage... so why does he feel that he gets to break certain unwritten rules and smash down on the rest of the crowd in 'our venue' but very, very, true, he did back up into the kid purposely
What? They were a Trio for their first ever concert. Guy Picciotto was in the Audience dancing...They met...and the rest is history....You must be trolling, right?
He also doesn't believe in bands having security at their shows. He is dedicated to talking out confrontations with fans. He asks politely for everyone to behave and be kind. If he doesn't want them to jump off the stage he should have barricades? Nah, when you don't want someone to do something, you ask nicely. Is it too much to ask?
@rnfr The band had asked for no security on stage. Furthermore, it was Ian you backed the kid into his own amp. Two things that should be kept in mind.
@kenny77771 Ian doesn't do those kind of things. Because he's a fucking nice guy. Fugazi even used to give people their money back before they threw them out of gigs
@pukeoncops123 It's about being yourself, and not giving a fuck what anyone else thinks. It's about freedom Fugazi saw stage dives and moshing as oppressive, that's why they don't allow it.
Ian's such a fucking nice guy about the whole incident. I'm sure plenty of musicians would have just beat the crap out of that guy for knocking over their gear.
If the initial incident with guy getting on stage had happened at a Ramones show, Johnny would had security beat the shit outta the guy and throw him in the back alley. I've seen it happen.
if they had a decent security staff, that kid would've been politely escorted off the stage the minute he stepped on. just cuz it's a punk rock concert, doesn't mean you can do anything you want and fuck up the whole show.
