I remember watching this video a month ago and was wondering why the colours in the Fujifilm files look so vastly muted and lacking in pop and contrast compared to the Hassy files in the landscape comparison. Finally got around to downloading the raw files and now i understand. Matt had the Fuji GFX100s shooting on the Eterna colour profile simulation during these tests-- which is a more muted, desaturated, less contrasty profile that's intended for cinema/filming. Once i set the colour profiles to Provia or Astia-- the colours definitely pop just as much as the Hassy files. So i hope that answers some of the questions here on why there's such a vast difference in colour/pop between the two. In any respect- thanks for the video and files Matt.

Thanks for the info. I was very confused about the colors. I just watched another video where a guy compared colors from Xpro 1 vs X2D & he preferred his Xpro 1 apsc 16mp camera more. I love when people share honest opinions like that. Instead of trying to justify a purchase. I still wonder why Matt used Eterna out of all the great film simulations? That doesn't make sense to me. I almost feel like he was trying to give Hasselblad the upper hand in color science. Mr. Matt please dont get mad at me for my opinion. I'm a faithful viewer & would definitely go Hasselblad if I could afford it. Until then I'll stick with my poor man's fuji xt2. 🤓✌🏾

@@losmalqueridos2009 you're welcome. My guess was that he was probably filming/tested the video features on the gfx with eterna and forgot to switch it back when he made the comparison shots- other wise yeah i do agree it can be misleading to viewers when comparing the pictures side by side when it comes colour science difference between the two systems. Both pictures really ought to be set to their standard colour profile (fujifilm on provia)-- but eh what can you do, video is already out for months now.

It's early days for the mark 2 Hasselblad. There will be further firmware updates. Probably more lenses too. The 16 bit colour of the Hasselblad is much more appealing to my eyes.

fuji's 100/100s also has 16 bit colour. with that said, unless you are heavy edit you might be able to make good use of the extra 2 bit colour depth.

Great review. For me the. 1/125 flash sync native is a deal end. Even if it could do 1/200 it will be something. It seems to me that Matt is not a big flash outside user, so there is that. The other thing is Hasselblad colors out of the box, it cut your editing time a lot (if the d* focus system works). Colors out of the box, and that is just taste (and in particular colored people) will be Tha Hasselblad first, then Canon/Nikon depending on the subject, and then Sony and last by a wide margin Fuji. Clearly, this is just taste. Many people love film simulations. The lack of continuous focus of the Hasselblad is a major inconvenience (not even talking about. face or something just old-style continuous focus). Price is similar for me, I also love watches, and materials and craftsmanship have value.

Hasselblad color is just better, Fuji looked like it’s flat compared to Hasselblad. That being said, i just bought GFX100s and I’ve been very pleased with the results. Paired with 110/f2 is just amazing. Now if money is no object I’ll own both but that Hasselblad colors are just really nice. Will need to download your raw files.

The Fuji purple color cast is annoying. I had the Fuji 50sii and X1Dii and the colors from the Hasselblad were much better out of the box. However, I have to admit that shooting experience goes to Fuji. Hasselblad had the most annoying shutter sound and the touch screen interphase felt more like an iPhone.

I completely agree with the collectors item aspect of the X2D, the sad thing is that digital items just aren't collectable... at some point they will strop performing I feel this needs to be considered in todays world. the days of film collectable cameras that will still give incredible results in 50+ years are gone I believe. We can’t ignore that the quality, the sharpness, the clarity, the colours, the details in Hasselblad are magnificent so they really have very awesome results compared to any other camera in world even today after one year from releasing it knowing that many companies announced amazing cameras recently. Also the other features as simplicity, minimalism, 1TB internal storage. For me the only advantages of Fujifilm gfx 100s and even the new flagship of the Japanese mark which is ii version is the versatility talking about video features which are totally removed to concentrate on photos, the affordability of lenses, and the price.
@corbinwesler3985
@corbinwesler3985 Год назад
You said it if it's just for results, then you'd suggest the GFX. I'd argue against that. If I'm going for just results, I'm going for the Hasselblad X2D. The colors SOOC are so much more natural... especially for skin tones. From everything I've seen, the GFX tends to be a lot cooler and perhaps a little more magenta, and that negatively affects skin tones. Although, if I'm doing just landscape, the cooler tones might be a little more desirable. I always liked Fuji Pro 400H for landscape photos, and the GFX kinda of mimics that traditional fuji film look. For the image results, leaf shutter, and build quality, I'm going with the X2D hands-down. At that price point/both of them being cheap medium formats, I personally wouldn't say the $3000 difference is a huge difference.

Thanks for providing the data to compare Fuji vs Hasselblad 102 mp cameras. From the information you provided I come to the conclusion that the Hasselblad is a much better choice. The image quality is much better, especially color reproduction which is evident in every side-by-side comparison. Also, you described things I dislike about having a dozen buttons on the camera and can inadvertently push the buttons and end up with ISO 50,000, for example. Also, you describe having to dive three menus deep to set up exposure bracketing. Having spent most of my time with Leica in the past 10 years, I appreciate the minimal configuration and build quality. Overall, the Hasselblad will give the experience and image quality I want. I ordered the X2D from B&H on Sept 8, the day after it was announced and it arrived a month later on Oct 8.

OK, unless I win the lottery I'm not getting either, but: Having watched Peter Coulson's video's (he shoots a Hasselblad) and the way Hasselblads Phocus works, along with its' design ethic and IBIS - I'd towards the Hasselblad. In either case I'd need a different camera to cover 90% of what I tend to shoot (sport dogs, macro shots) so both choices get expensive (or maybe not since I already have the 2nd camera :^) ). It does sound like both cameras would be annoying to use at times, it just depends on which annoyances one is willing to suffer.

For the kind of work I do, 50MP are more than enough and if you do not have the time in post, the Fuji JPGs could be one more reason (but then, why do you go MF?) 😅

The major difference between them that you didn't cover was the color science between them. I am a portrait professional who has used medium format Phase One, Fuji, and Hasselblad and the Hasselblad color science is extremely good. When using the Fuji, I had to do much more color adjustment to get into a range that I felt somewhat comfortable with for portrait work, whereas the Hasselblad was spot on right out of the camera.

Exactly what I checked the comments for. “Why on earth did he not mention the differences in the color renditions.?” That alone is worth the difference in price to me, in favor of the Hasselblad, not to mention the better IBIS, better EVF. This seemed like a really strange omission on his part. But, yeah, if you buy cameras based solely on cost, or the need to use adapted lenses, and only using the camera for black and white, then the Fuji is the clear choice.

The Hasselblad is so much more visually appealing that, as a collectors item, it wins without question but also the 16 bit color depth would make me work very hard to find a way to make it work - assuming I could afford the price. I preferred the images shot by the Hasselblad in these comparison pictures you shared because of color balance and tone. I assume these are straight out of camera images so that has appeal, but I am surprised you didn’t match them with at least a gray card. Fuji lens selection is its biggest appeal in the comparison… Will Hasselblad catch or will they remind main display case queens?

Well, there's a reason top 1% of the industry uses Hasselblad and PhaseOne cameras, not Fujifilm cameras. Hasselblad and PhaseOne are in their own league. The image quality, the micro contrast, the 3D pop, the dimensionality, the smooth colors... Fuji just doesn't even compare to Hasselblad. It's like comparing a Sigma lens to a Zeiss or Leica lens, the poor Sigma rendering just doesn't compare. Hasselblad in its own league. Incomparable. Also, people who shoot Hasselblad and who will be buying this camera, don't even remotely care about mundane things such as Eye AF or Auto-Focus in general. I've been using my H5D for years now, as well as my new a7RIV and I don't know the last time I used Auto-Focus. I can't wait to replace my a7RIV with the X2D!

Thanks for pandering to this niche market Matt. In many ways the Hasselblad is playing catch-up. As a long-time owner of the 50s, then 100 and now 100s I have been disappointed by the ergonomics and design ethos Fuji brought to the GF line. The best build quality is in the 50S mark one but for many it was an ugly duck too far. The 100 has abysmal controls - acres of space with pimples and dials in flimsy plastic culled from a small compact parts tray. The 100s sought to address these obvious shortcomings but does not really cure the deficiencies. One cannot help feeling that if Fuji engaged someone with design flair and a grounding in ergonomics the Hasselblad would have virtually no competitive advantage. It is to Hasselblad's great advantage that each iteration of the GF body appears to have been rushed to the market with an ergonomic moving feast. With my head, I have to stick with the GFX system because of the lens line-up and the colossal difference in price of the lenses. The baseline 38/55 XCD V lens is £750 more expensive than the most expensive GF 250mm telephoto in the UK. I am yet to see a compelling IQ advantage accruing from XCD lenses to justify this , the real extra outlay/depreciation cost in getting into the system. However, with my heart there's no doubt that the Scandinavians have it.

I'm comparing the raws and in the nightscape pictures it seems like you have focused a lot more in front with the Fuji compared to the Hasselblad. Which makes a comparison of sharpness in the middle completely useless. The Fuji is doing a way better job with sharpness in the edges of those photos. And on a wider angle (30 vs 38mm). So I feel like people are not getting right judgment on these cameras. Also in comparison I feel like the Fujifilm colour is actually way better than the Hasselblad, feeling more natural. Hasselblad feels like it already has a colour balance filter added to it. Which will 1. really influence your style or 2. takes more time in post-processing to get rid off. Seems like everyone preferring the hasselblad have not seen the raws and are just gearheads instead of actual photographers. Probably an unpopular opinion but who gives. Also white balance is off.

Seems like the WB is off for the Fuji in a lot of the pics. Hassy has a great color, even I as a Fuji shooter admit that. But these examples are waaay off.

Considering the notion presented by the hassy faction that the GFX was so much worse with color rendition, I wonder whether some of you are blind...eg. didn't you really notice the extreme yellow-ish color cast in the hassy version of the image at 5:00? As somebody else already mentioned, I'm also pretty sure the chair the model is sitting on is supposed to be white - as it is rendered in the GFX image. But I guess you also thought Asian people were "yellow"...no, contrary to the myth they really aren't. Hence at 5:00 I'm pretty sure the GFX got much closer to the actual skin tone of the pretty lady. Of course it could just be a WB issue...but then the hassy is really off here...
@mattgranger
@mattgranger Год назад
Big leap to assume people are writing off Asian people that way… you can enjoy your system without defending it that way
@philippk819
@philippk819 Год назад
@@mattgranger OK sorry. And it's not my system. I don't shoot GFX. But I wonder how this extreme difference in the images came about and why most people didn't seem to notice the discrepancy in the color of the chair next to the skin, considering they explicitly mentioned the skin tones as being especially pleasing. Heck, they actually mentioned the hassy skin tones were "warmer" and one said the GFX one was "dull". From the context of their writing, I got the strong feeling most based their assumptions on what they saw in the video...many asked whether you had done something in post processing or whether this was how the images came out of the cameras. Others wrote they would still have to download the images. So what really triggered me wasn't the "sacrilege of criticizing a certain system" but indeed the feeling that many seemed to think "yellow-ish" was the more accurate skin tone...

Thanks for the comparison (always interested, even if not buying now). Would it be technically difficult, when comparing systems, or showing stills, to overlay them with the name of the camera and shutter speed/aperture/ISO on the screen (not in LR)? Just curious. It would make viewing the photos more informative at the time you are showing them.

Another great review. I have seen all your X2D reviews so far and find them helpful. In judging the Fuji vs H images I consistently opt for H as I see better color, more gradated color and better definition and shading. The H images have more pop to them and if I were a buyer I would be buying those images over the F's. The skin tones on your model made that plain, to my eyes and way of thinking. Now as I am persuaded you are one hot shit guy with a camera I am buying your X2D course. Hopefully I will have the X2D body soon. The 55 lens has arrived. As a little lagniappe please tell me where you got the tripod socket dongle to attach the wrist strap. I got the RocknRoll wrist strap but have nothing to attach it with. It is interesting to see that some of the GFX's images also shift to magenta like my images taken with an X70 and an XE-4. I have been adapting several Canon lenses to an X1D II and I have full sensor coverage with a Samyang 24mm tilt-shift lens and an old Canon FD 135mm. For all the other Canon FD or EF lenses I crop to a square as they hard vignette. I am also looking forward to comparison of the X2D with the X1D II. I am actually surprised I haven't found one yet.

You neglected to mention the XCD 20mm lens from Hasselblad. It's expensive for sure but available. I've owned the X1D-1 and X1D-2 since they each came out. I have 5 lenses of the XCD series which are phenomenal and the image quality is incredible. Have not owned or used the Hassalblad X2D or Fuji 100 cameras however, the image file size for each of these cameras is in the 200MB/image range and at some point you really have to start thinking about storing files of that size.

Thank you for this vid. It's been most interesting. I never could understand the 'super priced camera magic'. first heard about Hasselblad when someone from the Beatles band mentioned a girlfriend (or wife?) who had it and shot them. Then, a few years ago, it was that a type of Hasselblad branded lenses made a bit of a scandal. But i have to admit those pics from this camera talk more to me than the Fuji. Would I spend on it? No. Got other things to do with my little amount, hard earned pennies. If I had the choice, id get a Lieca. Those are the lenses i love most. It would be interesting to compare.

If I was building a system it would be Fuji. More lens choice, lower cost and ultimately a more rounded option for a working pro unless you need that flash sync. For a treat though, the Hassy wins. It is the more exciting choice. The body looks stunning as does the interface. I also prefer the colours on the comparisons shown here.

Matt, aside from the leaf shutter, how do you assess the IQ of the two lens systems? I am a very happy GFX 100 user, no complaints, but if Hasselblad had materially better glass, that could push me to change. Other note I would have is that Capture One stubbornly refuses to support Hassleblad. I was about ready to place an order and check out the X2D, but the lack of capture one support, for my workflow, is a killer. Thanks.

@@mattgranger Then here is my though. The best of the Fuji lens's are fantastic, e.g., 110, 32-64, 250, 45-100 is close, and the 23... really really good.. Capture one is a big enough deal I wouldn't switch save for a massive glass difference and I just don't think that's realistic. So for me, at that premium, Im staying with GFX 100... Probably would reach same conclusion at a smaller premium.

It would be nice to see a focus range limiter on the Fuji. Something that lets you set the maximum/minimum focus distances during a shoot. That would. eliminate most of the big focus mis-pulls in controlled scenarios.

White balance is warm in video and in Hasselblad images, but not in Fuji images. It's purely a matter of taste and can of course be configured. Why not set them up to have the same color temperature for a more meaningful comparison that goes beyond "feel"?
@anthonyrock5039
@anthonyrock5039 Год назад
Good point.. Even if you have the same white points, they both render colours differently as the sensors are calibrated by each manufacturer to what their idea of a good starting point is. There are comparisons like that online and it is in green and red that they differ the most. Interesting enough in this regard is that the Sony base has a very strong lean toward yellow. In the end of the day they will all produce incredible images in the same hands. At this point it seams to be more important to some to have as much automation as possible to take the images but it comes down to what is important to you and since life is way to short to worry about what others think, what inspires you to go out and shoot is most important to me.

Question: does the Hassy have 16 bit depth as other Hasselblads have had? wouldn’t that bring in better quality rendition & transitions of colors over the 14 bit Fuji ?? And some of the 1st portrait images the fuji looked washed out a little, possibly slightly overexposed 1/3-1/2 stop and absolutely no saturation in the skin 🤔🤔 almost on the whiter side. Dix you have a fuji simulation on by chance? the Hassy color definitely looked better but i shoot fuji and do not see that flatness in skin color in my images. Just my question as to variances in setup The Hasselblad port colors looked 👌🏼 but i don’t think they have ever looked bad over the years, the fuji pics look cooler overall any thoughts also as to why fuji has not jumped to 16 bit in their MF cam body’s?? cost?
