16 mm just has such a great look. Personally I like it more in the 3:4 spect ratio as it really reminds me of the look of those cheap children's movies made for VHS, but regardless it's just such a vintage and gritty style I'm so jelous.

Nicholas Nolan ahh yeah 16mm does indeed look very pretty. Film in general is just a wonderful thing. 16mm is very affordable these days so you should think about buying a short roll and just shooting some. Borrow a camera and get going.

I keep finding still photography using motion picture film which was annoying, so good to see an actual motion picture with it. Beautiful work! Wait, in the intro, why didnt your light turn off when you blew out the candle : D

Great film and shots, and I love your film camera. I'm a film student at the moment (2nd year of a Bachelor of Film at SAE QANTM Creative Media Institute, Sydney Australia Camps) and I can really understand all your techniques/it's nice to watch something like this. Regards.

REELOnlineFilmSchool Hi, sorry for the late reply. I would like to shoot on film to see what it's like, but facilities wise it's too difficult. So far in my two year degree (2nd year now) I'm only just beginning use the camera (it's all bloody essay's), in this case SAE QANTM's Canon 60D DSLR - video & stills in RAW, this is because we are doing documentaries this Trimester, and we need something smaller and more portable. They keep saying we'll get to use the RED camera but my course will be over soon! In 2013 I did a 12 x months Cert IV Screen & Media - TV Strand, so I got to use a larger TV ENG type camera in Semester 1, then in Semester 2 we used TV Studio pedestal mounted camera's (multi-camera with Control Room). Kind regards.

Amazing video! Do you mind providing the type of tripod, tripod head, and baseplate you used? Also, the mm of the rails? Thanks for sharing.
@Elliander
@Elliander 5 лет назад
Thank you Joshua. The tripod is a Ronford (medium-duty I think), a Ronford F4 fluid-head, but there isn't a base plate as the SR can just screw straight onto the head. Also, don't know what the rail mm is but they're just the standard SR rails. Cheers, Elliot

You may not see this, but could you put a list of all the equipment you used? Mainly all the lighting equipment, as well as the lenses used for the SR. I would really appreciate it; thank you for sharing this behind the scenes footage, 16mm is one of my favorite formats.

TweetBomb hello! Thanks for your comment. We have a blog over at reeldealfilmschool.wordpress.com/2014/04/17/the-mysterious-disappearance-of-m-m-bayliss-16mm-short-film/ about the making of this film. But to answer your questions about lenses: Zeiss Distagons 9.5 / 12 / 25 + 10-100 Zoom and then for lighting: 4 Dedo lamps and a 2kW blonde for the moonlight outside the window. Hope all that makes sense, best Elliot

@@Elliander Thank you so much for such a quick reply, was not expecting it haha. Just wanted to say your cosmos film looks incredible even being shot on the BMP! I do still hope you continue to shoot on the beautiful and authentic format that is film. Thanks again Elliot, wishing the best.

TweetBomb no problem my friend. Thank you for your good questions. And thank you for your compliments re cosmos. Can’t wait to finally share it - it’s been a long old journey. But yes, there truly is nothing like film and I hope we get to shoot something on it again. We have 2 rolls in the fridge just have to figure out a short to shoot. Fingers crossed we’ll have some time now Cosmos is complete. Have you any projects shot on film available to see online? Cheers, EW

@@Elliander Apologies getting back to you so late. I'm gearing up to shoot a short film out here in LA next summer. Going to be shooting on the SR3 with Canon FD primes. When everything is said and done and I've released it into some film festivals for the following year I'll be sure to let you know!

what was wrong with the gates? sticky?
@Elliander
@Elliander 5 лет назад
Gianni M do you mean checking the camera’s gate? In between each shot you check the gate for “hairs” (slithers of film that slice off as the film runs through the camera system) - these hairs can ruin the shot you’ve just capture... or the shot you’re about to
@gfm8421
@gfm8421 5 лет назад
And how did you guys do the metering?ust with the sekonic or with a digital camera aswell? what did you meter for? slighly shawdowy midtones?
@Elliander
@Elliander 5 лет назад
We metered with a light meter as you would when shooting film any other time. We did not use a digital camera as a back up, tbh I wouldn't even know how to do that in a way I would trust - I fully trust the light meter and the practice setting exposure that way. And we metered for a general exposure, nothing fancy or clever over or under, just making sure the key light would be exposed correctly for each shot.

yup then we are doing the same thing :) i mostly measure the midlights if i'm shooting natural light and the light source bouncing off with tungsten :) thanks for letiting me know your workflow - appreciate it! and the film oof course looks beautiful!! @@Elliander
