Fuji X-H2S Bird detect does it work

In this video we take a look at the new Bird detect AF setting in the newly released X-H2S.
I took the camera to a Owl centre where they have flying demonstrations and I tried to push the camera to it's limit by shooting at 40fps using bird detect to follow the birds in flight.
After examining the results I believe Fuji need to tweak the algorithm to get the best from the camera as at the moment it is hard to trust it will stay tracking the birds but see what you think after watching my results I will be posting a similar video looking at the video performance at the same demonstration plus another stills example from a nature reserve.

Tracking an eye (or whatever) and being to maintain focus on it are two completely different things that most reviewers (and photographers in general) don't seem to recognise. This review illustrates the issue perfectly. Neither my Sony A1 nor my Canon R6II would have performed any better here.

Very nice review. Most images I have seen from this camera are of stationary objects and not much of a challenge for most cameras. This review actually demonstrates what this camera is designed for. Hopefully they will address some of the issues you brought up.

This is actually a great real world results showcase with very challenging conditions. Personally wouldn't push it this hard but it's really nice to see the cameras limitations. Would be great if someone with an R3/A1/Z9/A7iv/R7 could join you and do similar if not the same tests. Having said all of that, I personally am happy with my XH2S as APSC has always been my preferred choice and video being my main work these days, (I don't mind manual focus and while I aspire to shoot more of nature and urban wildlife) this is the best APSC camera anyone can buy and most of us can always keep learning and improving our own should which matter the most at the end of the day.

It looks like the tracking is better than the actual AF. Like the tracking box stays on the subject but the AF is just looking at an area of high contrast within the box, so if the fence is even a bit in the box the camera focuses to it.

While I agree with some of the comments to get better in-focus images, I love this video showing one data point with this particular setting in the real world. Some people might just want to use this lens, and bird detection. Then this is what you get.

Hi, I think you should try the subject detection + zone focus. I'm using that and that's improved the success rate of the focus and locking on the subject. Good luck 👍🏻

Tried all settings now none appear to be better than any other as I believe when you are in subject detect the camera is using all the phase detect points to look for the subject irrespective of what setting you pick.

Yes tried all those and yes it limits the area the camera is looking at, so it picks up the bird but it makes no real difference to the stickiness of the lock that is what I am trying to show once the camera has locked onto the bird it doesn't always stay locked on.

@@GrandadsReviews Your best bet is to five into the setting and maybe try putting stickiness to the max and af speed to max so it may be able to track a bit better things. Some times I think it loses the head because of low depth of field and because the head is small, I think that it could be addressed with software although it may also be a limitation of the number of phase detection points

Thanks for the video. Echoing some of the other comments here, generally you want to track the animals as they move otherwise you're pretty much setting AF up to fail. I realise you were trying to show it's effectiveness when using sub-optimally, but I'd say the result was as expected.

I think less than ideal technique caused 80% of the missed focus here. For example, if the bird is sitting on a post, facing right, then frame the bird in the far left of the frame, probably bottom left, since the birds will be gaining elevation. You always seemed to be behind the bird, but the bird started off from dead center frame. Possibly, backing off from 600mm , giving some breathing room would help, also.

You are correct and that is how I would normally track birds but I wanted to give the camera a hard a time as possible to see how it would cope if used by a first time user plus the fact it won’t stay locked on is a problem Fuji need to address.

There has been some firmware updates and for wildlife photography I would choose the X-H2S the faster sensor readout is a big help.

It is the Baytree Owl and wildlife centre near Spalding PE126JU. The camera had the latest firmware at the time of shooting but there has been a couple of firmware updates since then.

Hi, I liked your real world real me type of video. Meaning to say, I would be as proficient as you with this camera and not some lab based test. And based on what you show, I really wonder if the x-h2s will be as good near to as good as either Sony A7 iv or Olympus OM1. I am a Fuji user and have almost all lens range from 16mm to 400mm. Am into birding now a days and I find the previous cameras to be atrocious in tracking birds. Or even identifying bird in bush. Hence I was considering to change systems to either Olympus or Sony. I remain undecided. Yours is the first proper bird in flight test I have seen on RU-vid. The rest of the videos are more about pet tracking or theoretical bird tracking discussions. Looking forward to your next - in the park test. Thnx.

Thank you for your comment, I believe the X-H2S will be as good as all the other cameras out there after Fuji puts out a firmware update as the other manufacturers have had more time to perfect (well no camera is perfect) their autofocus algorithms. And I agree with you some of the other reviews do not show it being used in a real hands on way and that is what I wanted to show, I will be posting another video from a nature reserve which is a calmer shoot less action but more birds in water on the ground and flying.

Sorry but my former R5 and current OM-1 is far superior to locking onto and STAYING on a subject as you've demonstrated. I think Fuji needs some firmware updates.

Interesting! What were your AF settings? Wide tracking? Obviously you had continuous AF, What about AF tracking sensitivity? What is on suddenly appearing subject? With that busy background I think any camera would struggle.

It doesn’t matter what af setting you pick single point,zone or wide tracking the subject detect always uses the whole sensor only up using your setting as a fall back if it can’t find a subject p, I tried different tracking and speed settings none made much of a difference

@@eliaspap8708 used that before on my X-T3 but in afc the problem you get is if the subject moves a fraction out of focus not enough to really matter the camera will not take the shot and you may miss a great image altogether I’d rather have a dozen out of focus images but with one or two that are usable

Hitrate drops a lot at 40FPS, try 20/30. Also one of the snappier LM lenses is required on such a fast subject. (18mm, 23mm, 33mm, 90mm, 200mm and 150-600mm) The 50-140, 70-300, 55-200 and any non-LM lenses won't keep up with the X-H2S.

I was using the 70-300mm and I wanted to push the camera too it’s limit that’s why I was using 40fps in my other video at the nature reserve I was using single shot and 15fps with no real improvement in hit rate.

I think you were pushing it very hard. Very close to rapid target you were not very good at keeping it near the target box which limits the area the camera looks for eyes. Also did you choose focus over shutter release. If not it just releases the frame without focus confirmation. Also 40fps is a huge number of calls in the most difficult situation. An r5 cannot do this type of situation. These displays are a nightmare for rapid tracking. If the target is the same contrast and colour of the background in mono (which the camera reads in) any camera will struggle. I’ve found BIF with this camera fine. Try wide area tracking and eye focus. The zone focus is used to direct the cameras attention so if your box is off target you are going to have problems.

It as in wide area tracking (plus you can’t select eye detect when it’s in bird subject detect)giving it the whole sensor to find the target and yes the idea was to push it to the limit in this test. I am also about to post a video from a nature reserve using single shot and bird tracking and spoiler alert it’s not much better,but it is good and with some tweaking from Fuji it will get better.

@@MrPjtmac In answer to theses excellent questions 1 I wanted to push the camera to its limit in a very difficult situation to see how it coped as taking it easy wouldn’t have shown it’s full capabilities or strengths 2 yes I had the shutter on release as I wanted to show the missed focus shots to illustrate that the camera didn’t stay locked on and was prone to switching focus. 3 Fuji recommend wide tracking as the best focus mode to use for birds in flight that may enter the frame and cross the frame to exit as the algorithm can scan the whole sensor to spot the bird single point and zone are excellent for perched or birds flying in a restricted area not entering and exiting the frame.

40 fps burst also limits the focusing modes, try 15 or 20 burst rate, frame the subject, and check your in-focus results, eye detection is a great improvement but the technique is still the main thing

@@oldbonesuk1139 subject detect which is a mode in itself is not effected by 40fps and I wanted to push the camera to its limit and it was the in focus results that were lacking but you are correct technique is a big part of capturing in focus images.

You need a external recorder or a hdmi to usb capture card then set info out via hdmi on the camera , I use a old Atomos Ninja Star external recorder.

The 70-300mm is excellent for this fast action as it gives a wider view to spot the birds in flight then to zoom to shoot plus it’s a whole stop faster than the 150-600mm which is where I believe Fuji went wrong with the 150-600mm ask any professional wildlife photographer and they will tell you you need a fast lens for wildlife as it’s usually in limited lighting conditions, the 150-600mm is a excellent lens in its own right and can take excellent images but if you are already pushing 12800iso at 1/3200 to photograph kingfishers diving at f5.6 f8 not going to work. Just my personal opinion though.

I tried all focus settings and they made no difference after speaking to Fuji they recommended wide tracking for birds in flight that may enter and exit the frame as in wide tracking the camera is using all the sensor to spot the bird/subject.

You do realise the speed of the owl at launch? And the fact that you failed to anticipate and pan? I am not sure you get how to use it. Did you use the central zone or over the entire screen? Yes, you need to get your settting right but that is the same for every camera. But standing so close and the bird flies off and you wonder why it misses, jeez. What lens were you using? Did you really shoot this with a Fujifilm 50-230mm? This is not designed to be a wildlife lens? If you had used the 150-600 like most wildlife people will, you would probably get a totally different result. This is more a video ro explain user error and how to fail to use an unsuitable lens.

I realise the speed of the owl as I have been photographing wildlife for 30yrs and I have been to this place before with my X-T3 with better and more consistent results. I was showing that the camera would not maintain the track plus if you watch my latest video you will see that when you are in subject detect the camera uses the whole sensor to spot the subject not the focus mode you have picked that is just a fall back for when it looses the subject I was using the 70-300mm and most professional wildlife photographers will not be using the 150-600mm as it is too slow aperture wise for most wildlife photography that mainly involves low light levels. The camera does a great job of spotting the subject but not a good job of staying locked on or maintaining focus even when the subject is static that is the point I was trying to make and I believe this will be a simple fix via a firmware update. I am in the process of editing a video showing a more realistic scenario at a wildlife nature reserve at Rutland Water with egret’s,herons,grebe’s cormorants etc which will hopefully show the reason I wouldn’t trust the subject detect at the moment as decisive shot would be easily missed.

It’s a camera that takes images it’s well built but doesn’t need a soul it’s just an inanimate object like any tool that you use to do a job.

Not sure why you think it is cheaply made. Everyone apart from Mad Ken thinks it is very well made and extremely well weather sealed. It does not have a nice chrome strip and lots of command dials for the Fuji fanbois because it is designed for professional users, not the vastly aging Fuji base.
