I wish you could make and swap folders in camera. Like if I use my camera for normal everyday stuff have a folder and when I do pictures for like, a family members birthday, I could make a second folder and swap to it, and swap back when I'm done. That way they'd be separate inside the camera for later sorting.
I like to keep my camera numbering continuous, and use that on my computer as well, IOW…. I don’t rename or renumber my files. Recently I had to send my camera for some repairs and when it was returned to me, the file numbers were reset to 0000. I had to scratch my head to figure out how to get the camera counter back to the last file in my computer. So what I did was I took a photo, inserted the card in my Mac, and went inside the main folder to find the image file and I simply renamed to the next number of my fIlling system. Put the card back in the camera, shot a few test photos. Returned the card to my Mac, and voila…. My numbering system is back. I couldn’t find this info anywhere so thought I would pass it on. It can happen that you fill up the card and the counter restarts in the camera. Because fuji saves the files in numbered folders, that's fine on camera. But if you import those files to a different folder structure, say by year-month or whatever there is a chance that the photos will be placed in the same folder and you could overwrite some.
FYI, this file naming pattern is not specific for Fuji. That is a kind of a standard: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Design_rule_for_Camera_File_system Fuji allows to customize names as much as possible within the limits of the standard. But I miss one feature my Canon camera had: automatically create a new folder every day.
A new folder per day would be awesome. We forgot to clear a card after a day of shooting a short and then had to faningle the files into the right folders on our server. Was easy enough by looking at the time code but anything the camera does for me is much appreciated.

Nice. Good idea to rename the files to, for example, XT4 in camera, but while importing in Capture One (and I imagine some other software), the camera model name can be included in a new filename. It is handy for sure.
Hi Chris! Just another great video and an awesome way to a head weekend start!!! Very useful tips as usual! Formatting and renaming files is brilliant! ...as it might be a theme for another video: As a sports photographer, would be handy to have several folders - my case - Race 1, Race 2, etc. I only can set different folders while in sequential (not available in Backup or RAW\JPEG... so far as I was able to sort it out. If I'll go towards 'sequential' I will loose all 'backup' possibilities, meaning, that shooting in sequential, if there's a sd card corruption...client will be upset..! Any thoughts? With two cameras and the default file naming, you can possibly have two files with the same name. Setting a custom filename fixes that. BUT having done that with my two Fujis, I COULD NOT UPDATE THE FIRMWARE until I changed back to the default. You have been warned.
I have always named my pictures First to KN my initials then what camera it is, I have Xpro1, X-t1, X-t2, KNP, KN1ord Kn2. Then to make sure I don't have photos that have the same name, I put an A, aftet 9999 photos i change it to a B then C , and so on.

Chris, This is tremendously helpful, thank you. I just realized that I passed the 9999 and it looped back to 0001, which is a problem because now I have duplicate file names. Do you have any recommendation to handle this ? I use Capture one for import and Catalog.
Amazing videos... always helpfull. Question, I have a XT4 that I use a lot to film during a golf tournament, but from time to time I also take a couple of photos as well on that same tournament. So is there a way for the camara to set different numbers for photos and video? Because I do have to write down everything I film in a form of a log sheet, who is the player, his scores, what hole he is at, but every time a take a couple of photos the camara continious using the same numbers so when I have to write down the info for the video files I have to check every single number to see which one the camara use for videos and which for photos. @@pal2tech I checked my camera settings and its set for sRGB, so I'll have 4 spaces. So if I label the files with sRGB and then change the camera to Adobe RGB will th file names remain remain as named???
I just came across - a fluke or was it my mistake? Can't say - but maybe you can confirm. I set the image quality to N+RAW. Then I went about setting card slots - RAW to Slot 1 and JPG to Slot 2. To my dismay, doing this reset the N+RAW selection that I have always used to shoot FINE only and the files save to both slots.
Now that I know that the first three digits of the folder name cannot be changed, the information is useful to show the shutter count of the camera. From 100 to 101 it's 999 shutter actuations. So if the folder name is 162, it means that 62 folders have been created and thus the shutter count is around 62K. Does it make sense? The folder name on the SD card can be changed on a computer to 100 or whatever but in the camera it is still the same 162. Then again another question. The three digits folder name contains all the electronic shutter and mechanical shutter shots so it can't decide the real shutter count.
Hello, I would like to kindly ask you if it is possible to save pictures taken on Fuji cameras (XH2) separately according to date. I mean if it is possible to set Fuji camera in a way it would create automatically separate directories bz some name + actual date, e.g. Pictures-11. 11. 2023 and to this one will be saved all pictures taking the same date. Saving all pictures in just one directory e.g. FUJI_ is not fully comfortable especially if taking picture over the longer period of time when there is no possibility to download / backup. I think Pentax can do it. My question is if FujiFilm XH2 can be somehow set to create directories with current dates.
I set my X-T4 to record sequentially with images going to Slot 1 and video to Slot 2. From time to time, and without me doing anything the camera will switch these or set both to Slot 1 or both to Slot 2. This "bug" caused me to lose 32 GB of video footage earlier this week. Has anyone else encountered this problem? It used to happen on my X_T3 as well.

Thanks for the great information. One thing that is not clear, is what needs to happen to have the folder go from 100_FUJI to 101_FUJI. I can't figure that out. Additionally, is there a way to create a new folder to distinguish between two shoots or two different dates using the same SD card? I would love to be able to tell the camera, this is a new shoot, create a new folder.
Good informative video, just one thing when you create and name a new folder, the folder number goes up one digit, as the first folder was numbered 100 and the second folder was 101, does that mean every new folder created the number increases?, regardless of what you name it.

Good info. I never thought to rename through camera. Thanks. That being said, I rename similarly when importing into LR. My biggest quandary is what to do after reaching 9,999 images. My LR catalog has 118k images in it. Any suggestions there?
What happens to the very first image (0001) when you shoot the 10,000th image? Does it get covered over, or do you have two images with the same file name?
As far as several RU-vid videos state the camera will show an error, and you need to format your SD (evtl. loosing all other images) to reset the counting before you are able to shoot further. Hopefully this is fixed with the firmware updates in the meantime, but not sure…
I use an external recorder (Atomos Ninja V) and run HDMI out from XT4 to that. Then, I set XT4 to display menu options (there's a setting for that). The resulting video is the exposure corrected to make easier to see and then it's added as b-roll to the overall video.
