Finally a reflective assessment and discussion on the latest GFX-cameras. This is really one of the rare and informative videos on the topic out there asides the ton of shallow review videos. Thank you!

Thanks for the wonderful review. Now I'm interested in the GFX50 II. Despite the older sensor, I love the colours on the GFX.

A very good review that provides honest opinions. If you pay more you usually get more. Nevertheless, my impression from this review (and a few others!) is that the 50SII with the 35 - 70 lens is capable of producing fantastic photos and therefore is worth the money. I've used med format in the film era and its image quality was superior to 35mm (FF). I sense that still holds. Yes the two formats have their differences and advantages. I love FF but I'm attracted to this Fuji 50sII/35 - 70 combo. It's an excellent starting point and much more if I was just to add one more lens.

I'm okay with phase detect AF because it's usually super accurate for slow shooting. What is a hurdle for me though, is the lack of decent video (only FHD at 8-bit 4:2:0 on this I believe). I'm not for a moment saying that a larger format sensor camera should be judged by its video, but it is really convenient to have both solutions in one camera (and one case of lenses) and 4K is really beneficial even when delivering something in FHD. I'm mostly a hobbyist with the occasional paid work, and while I love taking stills, I also love being able to flick it to video and getting something decent. So $2k more for better autofocus, better video (rez and bitdepth) and double the stills resolution is worth considering in my humble opinion. Basically, if I buy a GFX50sii I'll still be carrying my XT3 and its lenses with me everywhere I go. If I could afford a GFX100s, I could probably sell my XT3 and XF lenses to fund the difference, though I would miss the slow-mo capabilities.

If youre a hobbyist then why are you even complaining lol. The GFX cameras are for people who are serious about printing, commercial work, and fine art. Not for people who want a video and stills camera. Theres a plethora of full frame that can that. It shouldnt really be compared with full frame. Its more of a niche camera and if you're not printing with it then its kinda pointless to buy
@ruaangrobler3035
@ruaangrobler3035 3 года назад
@@MoncoField Thanks for the input and I guess you are right. And please don't think it a complaint. It's simply an observation from a not-really-professional but serious enthusiast about a point I feel was worth mentioning. I've just always coveted a big-sensor camera. I was really looking forward to this one and hoping/assuming it might offer video similar to the GFX100. I was planning to buy it but because of these lacking features I can't really consider it. The only time I do make money off my camera is from video, but I love stills (and would love to make money off that too one day) - hence my need for both: video for income, stills for my heart. I think there are many people like me for whom $2k extra is worth it for the additional capability and convenience - not to mention the savings of not buying lenses for an additional system. That's all I was trying to say. If you only print stills, I'm sure it's a wonderful camera.

My decision would be geared towards better high iso performance and mainly the difference in dynamic range . How do the two of them compare in those parameters? Thanks for the video

Hi there! Regarding AF, is the fast AF on the GFX50R the same as the on in the GFX50S2 ? I ask the question because I just got a 50R to start with and I saw that there is the option of fast AF. Maybe included in the firmware update of the 50R
@GeekCulture

As a FujiFilm fanboy, I rented one to see what the fuss was all about… but no, it’s not a “balanced” camera for enough scenarios at the asking price, even used today at $2000 - it’s too much money. Specialist device, for professionals who know what they need and will use the camera to make money.

@DidierMOULINPhotography
@DidierMOULINPhotography 2 года назад
Thanks a lot for this video.it’s format is very good. Is the 50SII relevant? Well, with its kit lens I think it’s a marketing operation to make people enter the medium format world but the result is not even as good as a powerful crop sensor camera with a modern sensor and a good lens for 1/4 of the price. I think this kit lens should not even exist. It will only create frustration to people who will buy it. The 50sII is certainly relevant with the line of high level lenses (80, 110, 120, 250) thanks to its Ibis but the lack of phase detection and 16 bits make it less interesting for professional. Looking at the limitation of my SL2 (contrast detect only) I will certainly take the 100s with phase detection and not make the same error I did with the L mount
@GeekCulture
@GeekCulture 2 года назад
Thanks for watching. I agree, think coming from the SL2 the 100S is better suited. For the price you get a lot more. It’s unfortunate with some of the AF limitations the SL2 has because it’s such a beautiful camera.
@DidierMOULINPhotography
@DidierMOULINPhotography 2 года назад
@@GeekCulture yes thé SL2 is a keeper as soon as you get bright light and don’t need fast AF nor High ISO. But hey Leica just annonced a new firmware update that improve AF… let’s see how it works ! I will certainly make a video about this. Cheers

That 50mp sensor is a lot older than 4 years btw. What I want is a big pixel modern 60mp BSI sensor, with phase detect AF, 4K video ability (Nothing amazing, but just so we have it in a pinch), a 5.76 million dot EVF, a CF Express card slot, and the X-Processor 5 out of the X-H2. The EVF, CF express slot, and processor shouldn't be too hard, it already comes in the $2000 X-H2. This with the kit lens should be $4K, otherwise the FF market is so hot on the GFX's tail, it won't be relevant soon. FF already has 60mp in several cameras, the small GFX has to at least match the res, and up the pixel size, otherwise it won't be competitive. The 100mp model needs to go up in res even more soon, with similar processor and EVF upgrades. Either that, or give it the world's first MF stacked sensor and break the internet. That might pair well with the new 300mm GF lens patent. ;)

5 year old sensor in 2021
@obiromaniankenobi1136

Why change the Sensor when it's great and customers can buy a cheaper medium format camera. There are people still using a 5D MKII. Newer doesn't mean that much better. Also, R&D for the older Sensor is already been paid with the first 50S. If you know what you are doing behind the camera, nobody will give a crap if you use a GFX or a smartphone. It's something else if the camera with the "old" sensor is still as expensive as the first 50S. Which is definitely not.

Fuji took their sister to the prom with the 50 ii. Other than price point, it has not much to offer. 90% of the FF market has better features and image quality. Antiquated sensor and AF. I contemplated the purchase but if anyone is considering it, your money is Much..Much better spent on an A1 or R5. Back to the drawing board Fuji.

I feel this was a camera to clear existing sensors and give buyers and option with some features from the 100S.
