I hope you get to see this. So I am interested in adopting PRORES RAW and I am a FCPX user.. My questions are (1) On the Atomos website Fujifilm XH2S output is labelled as 10BIT. There is no written indication of 12BIT PRORES RAW but the 8K Fujifilm XH2 has PRORES RAW 12BIT written in the Product Specification. I am a litttle confused if the XH2S is outputting true 12bit Raw Signal. Or if its a mistake in writing by Atomos
Not a Fuji shooter myself, but great to see the improvements in the X-H2. The F-LOG2 profile looks great, and agree that the noise that is there is not overly distracting.
Hi Gerald, awesome video and this really seems like a great new camera! I would love to see a video about dynamic range with different recent mirrorless video cameras (A1/A7S iii, S1H/S5/S1, R5C, bmpcc6k pro, Sigma FP, etc). Specifically retesting dynamic range with applying noise reduction the way you did in post and seeing which cameras do best.
I second this! I know that would be a crazy amount of work, but it does seem Gerald has opened up an exciting can of worms here in regards to our assumptions about dynamic range. Excellent work as always, Gerald!
@@gillesvanleeuwen I don't think Cined uses NR in post as part of their Dynamic Range evaluation. However, one thing is for sure, if that became common practice we would have to reevaluate all of the cams.
It's a bad joke to review beta hardware. Serveral things aren't final, pre-production body & firmware, especially. And even AF and IBIS is NOT yet being finalized. See this from Fuji rumors - IBIS still needs to be fine tuned until the release in mid-July. The goal is to make it a gimbal-free camera. FYI.
Hey Gerald, recently i've been doing some in depth testing and found that at both 1250 and 3200 in f-log 2 there is a lot of chroma noise reduction happening at -4, causing colors to bleed and losing color info in the shadows, and the sharpening even at -4 is very very strong causing a very digital looking image, I've sent email requests to fujifilm to give us options to lower the noise reduction and sharpening another few notches, but they haven't even open the emails, so please if possible help us x-h2s users out by forwarding these requests, or at least making these problems more known, thank you very much!
As a Fuji shooter ,I’m super excited for the performance from the flog2, if the autofocus can be improve in the future I’ll upgrade my old xt3 without hesitation.
@@thierrry84 I owned the Xt4 and the AF is not bad. i was using the autofocus on video all day on weddings and viltrox lenses…since I was able to test the sony A7siii, the canon R5, R3 and the nikon Z9 on weddings…honestly the xt4 is doing well and i can have confidence in his AF. The real difference with the competition is face tracking, which is a matter of algorithms. Surely with an update, or even when it is released, the xh2s will be even better than what we see now.
Wasn’t actually too nerdy. I know next to nothing about the more technical aspects and feel like I understood everything. I think this is down how excellently you gauged the depth of information (as always) and the fact that you explain really well.

Totally agree on the complex CODEC options and room for error. I've had mine a year and am still yet to hone my video settings. Superb video as always, thank you.
It's a real shame about the AF and stabilization in video, it could have been a great all-around camera for Fuji, now it's just a good camera. I hope it can be fixed with a firmware update.
I don't think anyone does a deeper more comprehensive review on cameras than Gerald. I would really like to seem him do a pre-launch review on the 'Alice Camera'. Its a 4/3 system that uses your phone for processing power. The only videos on see are from the companies youtube page so I don't have a lot of faith in their accuracy. After watching this review and his honesty with the Sigma cameras, he would be perfect to take a look. Love all the content, thanks for the great quality!
By FAR the best review about this camera and Flog/Flog2. Please let us know your Braw experience with this camera. I'm thinking to get Video Asist 12G, But some people are talking about hot pixels they get. I wonder if you had the same experience.
Hey Gerald, as always an amazing review. I recently bought my XH2s and have a quick question. When you've been testing FLOG 2, I assume you've been using Davinci, what method you chose for converting it to rec.709? I did notice Davinci does not yet have FLOG 2 in its colour space transform tool.
You're Canadian. How many degrees centigrade is "warm studio" lol. Is it like 25degrees? 15 degrees centigrade? At least pour some maple syrup and let us see the consistency at that temperature. Great video! I switched to Panasonic because I needed that fan, but I'm not sure I want to bolt on a fan and not be able to close my lcd screen. I mean the external fan is genius! Much easier to clean and replace. But I feel I may break my screen if I can't fold it back 👍
Thanks so much for this! Love all the nerdy details and info about video. I also appreciate the reality check of ecosystems and where this fits. As an X-T3 user, the decision to upgrade or not is... complicated. Especially with considerations for upcoming X-H2H and presumed update of X-T5 in a year or so. Cheers!

Heyy also an xt3 user here for me this is an obvious upgrade i dont really anything that a future xt5 can bring to the table that this doesnt have, also the AF and the stabilization could be fix in a future upgrade (wouldnt be a rare move for fuji) anyway im already thinking which internal organ to sell to be able to buy this 🥲
@@jorgemiranda323 I got to have hands on for about and hour yesterday with the X-H2S. Short version - auto focus is what we’ve always wanted. Amazing! The form factor and controls would be a learning curve after 8 years with X-T bodies, but seems do-able. The body is a little smaller and lighter than I expected, and is actually a little shorter and lighter than my T3 with the small rig L bracket grip. I’m still undecided…

Obviously this is too much to ask, but is it possible to repeat this test for other cameras as well? Would love to see what sort of dynamic range you'd be able to get out of an R5C for example with post NR enabled :)

@@geraldundone yeah I've watched that one! Sorry I meant to say Sony A1, but somehow my brain changed it to R5C since I just watched that video too! I definitely don't expect you to go back and re-do this for every camera ever tested, but thought it would be a cool standalone video idea comparing some of the most popular cameras and how they fare after post NR has been added to see the true limits of those sensors :)
I made some ISO test to check the noise levels with my own eye and found something very interesting: When shooting BRAW to Video Assist the low ISO starts from 1000 and the switch to 2nd range starts from ISO 3200. When shooting internally F-log1 the low ISO starts from 640 and switches to 2nd range from ISO 2000 (not 1600). For F-log2 the ISO range starts from 1250, but the 2nd range kicks in from ISO 4000 (not 3200). So the interesting part is that from my tests the 2nd range for F-logs start from ISO 2000 for F-log1 and ISO 4000 for F-log2. Which is 1/3 stop higher then what Gerald is stating. The testing was made exposing all shots equally for different ISOs and the noise difference between the ranges was very clear. Am I missing here something, could my camera be somehow different or what could it be?
Maybe he has a preproduction model and yours is a production model. Same thing happened with the sony a7s3 when it was released. The iso range was slightly dif from the preproduction version
I would guess that the softening of the lcd with noise reduction on is a processor-efficiency solution so that it doesn't constantly have to be applying the computationally intense noise reduction just for the live view. It's only really applied in the recording.
Thanks for this detailed and technical test Gerald. Knowing that the DR of the XH2S sensor is bit lower than the XT4 DR for stills. Can we conclude that the DR of the XH2S in FLOG is also lower that XT4 DR in FLOG?
Gerald, I'm a fuji shooter, and yours is the best review I've seen and I think I've seen them all. Thanks so much. But a few questions remain I hope you can help with. I love shooting Fuji fully manual. I find their peaking to be the best among all mirrorless on the X-t4. Plus they allow you to punch in anytime while rolling. Is this still the case as it is on theX-T4? And did the H2s retain the AWB-L feature---a fantastic run and gun feature no one else has that I know of? Thanks again. Enquiring minds want to know.
For video work, would you recommend this, the Blackmagic 6K Pro, or the Sony A7 IV? Assuming lots of “set” recording, b roll, and some in field as well. I want the BM video quality but lack of stabilization and AF make me a bit nervous.
I own a BMPCC and a Fuji and had Canon (with its superb autfocus) before. With autofocus, it eithe rhas to be really good or non-existent because then it will just hunt and F-up your shots. I don't miss AF on my BMPCC, but I've gotten so frustrated with the AF on the Fuji that I've just turned it off. Predicitability is key.
I really like the camera but I’m actually a fan of the old dials and that’s the main reason why I’m not getting it. Tbh it sounds kk da dumb but I really want the thread in the shutter button iso dial and shutter speed dial. This is why I’m waiting for the xt5
Yeah, pretty much. I think there's a hard limit of 6 or 9 hours, but you'll fill your cards before that. I only tested in 24-25 Celsius though. Performance might be worse in direct 40C sun.
I was really hoping autofocus and IBIS would be improved. Trying to find the perfect hybrid camera for filming while hiking without the need for a heavy gimbal that I have to be sure is charged and which takes time setting up. Good IBIS and autofocus are a necessity for my handheld shooting. Thanks for this great review Gerald! 🙂

This 14+ stops of dynamic range is very interesting. I wonder what will it do with the details on normal lighting or human subjects. Can you make a comparison using a human subject or on a birghter light environment? It would be very impressive for fuji if those scenarios still produce a good dynamic range with still good details. I just hope this camera is not doing extreme under the hood noise reduction even when the in body noise reduction is turned off at the cost of details.
Great review as always! In the past I was a huge Fuji fan, I had (past tense) the XT4, and after talking with a Japanese friend who used to work for Fuji the fact that as a photographic camera Fuji is excellent and Fuji color has always been great. The trouble is on the video side they just don't have the experience Panasonic, Sony, and Canon do because they haven't made video gear for years and years.
Fuji has for years and continues to make broadcast and cinema video components/cameras... Squashing all the tech into consumer bodies and unfortunately timed releases compared to the big 3 brands has made it appear as if Fuji is behind. This release shows they're more than capable.
@@SneekeeMonkee None of those have autofocus. And they are so far behind Sony &Canon in autofocus that just the facts. I did keep my Fujinon MK lens and got then remounted for Sony E mount.
When you mention doing NR in post with DaVinci Resolve, were you specifically using the basic NR available in the free version or the fancier ones in the paid? (I guess this question applies to your other reviews too)
When shooting in the FLog options, is there the ability to view the image in rec 709 while shooting? As in, an overlayed viewing LUT that doesn't record to the clip?
Sorry for hijacking the comment section of this (awesome) review but I think Fujifilm needs to see this more. Please please please fix the app. It just plainly doesn't work. If it even connects it will still fail after transferring a few images. 5% of the times it actually works. Love my X-E3 hate the app. Or make it open source so someone else can do it
I run the c70 and the R3. Looking for a smaller run-n-gun daily driver camera. My options are this camera, the GH6, the R5C, and the R6. I was really hoping the AF was better than the X-T4 (which I owned and sold in a month)
If autofocus and size are your two deciding factors, the R6 seems like the best camera for you of those three, especially since you’re clearly already invested in the Canon ecosystem. The R5C is (relatively) big and bulky, and the GH6’s video autofocus is worse than that of the X-T4 you sold (DFD works great for photos though). I adore my GH6, but I mostly focus manually and won’t make any excuses for its poor autofocus lol
@@JeremyHalterman so I owned the GH5S. Loved it. Sold for the X-T4. Big mistake. But. In my testing the Panasonic had better, that’s BETTER, video autofocus than Fuji
So I agree with the R6. I am worried a little about the overheating. I owned the R5 before selling it for the R3. And they did overheat. Now I assume the R6 has better thermals than the R5. But essentially If I can record for an hour I am ok. I am not doing continuous. Really just record for 10min. Stop for a few min. Reframe. Record for 15min. Stop. Reframe. Rinse and repeat. What are your thought with that workflow?
@@AndrewKuttor Wow, I wonder if I’ve just given in to all the trash talk about Panasonic autofocus lol. The GH6 is far from unusable, but the issues are real, and I have lost takes because of it. The customization options make a huge difference though and are worth experimenting with.
@@AndrewKuttor Man, it just depends on your shooting environment, which if you’re running and gunning, I imagine will vary a lot. 10-minute bursts in an air-conditioned studio setting would probably be fine, but direct sunlight might not allow it to cool enough between shots. There is a third-party cooling fan that’s similar to the one that comes with the X-H2S (IIRC it’s bigger and uglier) that might close the gap for you if it works well.
Was excited to hear about this camera, but Fuji still has to screw something up and for the price they are asking, they should have gotten it right, perhaps with firmware updates but I feel like its turning into like a video game cycle, release buggy stuff early and then fix it later.
@@birjub9647 Camera has similar issues to the X-T4, I would not hold my breath for them to make it all that better, maybe the autofocus might improve but the ibis will be much the same.
Hi Gerald, I'm curious about what you said about limited "video" range and prores. I never heard of it, and after checking the prores white paper, I couldn't find any information about it. Is this a conclusion you got from testing, or is it an "official" information ? Thanks !
It's more of a metadata interpretation thing from the NLEs. In practice you can set the data levels to whatever you want, but since historically NLEs have treated ProRes in legal range, giving them full range causes issues that can be hard for those inexperienced with changing them to deal with.
We gotta remember that when it comes to choosing which brand to go, Fuji selection lens especially in the telephoto one are quite lackluster. Sure that they have excellent selection of short to mid range prime but they need to have a push on their zooms.
Fuji really had to go and release this as I was starting to shop for an entry cinema package. Already invested into Fuji glass, but was pretty enticed by the Z-Cam and Black Magic offerings around the same price point. Beyond AF and IBIS with the X-H2S, at this price point is there much difference between a dedicated cinema body like a 6k Pro over a hybrid like this?
I've never used a Z-Cam but I own an XT4 and a BMPCC 6K. I like the image quality of the Fuji, but if size isn't an issue I'll usually grab my BMPCC. Both in terms of IQ and ease of use is it leaps ahead. BRAW is also an amazing codec. I feel like I still need to give the XT4 some time but I have to admit, for RU-vid stuff the new Canon R7 is looking pretty good. The AF on the XT4 is really far behind and for RU-vid and self shooting stuff that's kind of a big deal. For all my other film work I'll always grab my BMPCC.
Fuji always has that exposure jumping in video issue (when zooming or with auto aperture setting). They never fix it completely probably due to their lens.
If you have davinci resolve studio you should tey the deflicker effect, that can often help with sudden exposure changes. Though that is not a pass for Fuji, mainly because most of their lenses aren't parafocal, meaning that if you zoom in the focus flickers aswell which can't be fixed.
I'm seeing a lot of trash talk about the H-2S vs the X-T4, pertaining to the X-T4 being the victor. I'd love to see a perfectionist such as yourself level the plains and get to the bottom of this. "I may be color blind but I know what a kelvin is"
