Finally! Avid X-T3 user here and I recently rented and tested the X-T4. I agree with everything but the IBIS was just unreliable when shooting 24fps without an OIS lens. I shot everything at 60 and interpreted it to 24 and it worked out ok. It's stellar on the Ronin like you showed in this video but most cameras are to a certain degree. Battery life is much better but most of us X-T3 users have accumulated batteries and adapted to using them. The screen and AF I think are where it's at. The AF is better but not world's better but that articulating screen is a saint.
Im assuming this would be a worthy upgrade over my XT2 then...? I currently use an EOS-R for my wedding and corporate work, but I have a few fuji lenses and obviously don't want to abandon them. I really liked my XT2 but I started having an issue with my shutter button.. it was like something broke underneath, the pin maybe? I dunno, but it lost its "half press" when pressing the shutter.. Could have just been bad luck on my part, who knows.. I do love the XT series though for its size... and along with the 16-55mm f2.8, I have the 35m f2. and 23mm f2... and If I did upgrade id probably get the 50mm f2 for a really sweet compact setup.. shit.. I think I'm talking my own self into it already..
I think the trip to the mountains was such a refreshing experience, despite you guys. Stuck in a big city, the fresh Canadian air, the peaks and river valleys? Whoa. thanks for the 10 min. vacation
@@barrycomer3688 Hey if Trump is re elected, can I come visit you? ey? like forever. Stuck in a big US city on the East Coast, those Canadian skies and mountains look great. Just sayin
I absolutely adore my XT-4 and the 16-55 I had purchased with it. It is my first camera I have ever used tether shooting with as well and have found that a fun experience. I am definitely at an amateur level, but this camera is helping me quite a lot with enjoying my photography. With it being as easy to use and understand, I don't get so frustrated when all I want to do is take nice photos lol. Very happy Fuji XT-4 owner.
A very worthwhile upgrade. Upgraded from the XT-3, and the “shooting experience” is night and day. Specifically, IBIS with small primes, articulating screen, battery life, quiet shutter, larger grip and improved auto-focus. Not since my 2006 Pentax K10D (which had IBIS by the way) have I used a camera that has felt so refined and complete. There is something to be said about a 4th generation refined device vs. a 1st generation one. XT-4 + 23mm f/2: BACK TO BASICS 😁!!
Got mine a few weeks ago. Coming from a canon M50, I absolutely am in love with this thing. Got the 16-55 to go with it and will he getting the 8-16 as well later in the year, super excited to do a review video myself later this month.
One big thing for Fuji too, is, they have native, pro-level glass available that's designed for APS-C. You don't have to live with a kit lens and you don't have to go all the way up to the bulk of a lens that's designed for full frame. There are some sweet spot pro-level lenses for Fuji that you just can't find for any other mirrorless system. Especially when you start talking about zooms.
Fuji has pro level lenses no other mirrorless sys has? Olympus has Fuji on lockdown. More options and each option is better in direct comparison. They are more expensive, yes
Faisal Sheraz “Almost” adds up to a significant advantage for Fuji by the time you multiply it by several lenses. I use the 16mm f/1.4, 35mm f/1.4, 56mm f/1.2 and 90mm f/2... buying the closest 36x24-format equivalents from Sony would cost exactly $2,000 more at current B&H prices.
I could really use the improved AF of the XT-4 for sports but on the other hand my XT-2 is such a nice camera already I have a hard time justifying buying another camera. 😭
I feel the same... now I am watching X-T3 pricing to see if it gets low enough to be interesting... but until then, I'm very happy with my X-T2. Also I still have my original X-T1 which, except for body skin coming off... it's still a great camera as well and my daughters are using it as a learning camera.
I'll wait for the XH-2. I would love built in waveform, FULL SIZE HDMI, and a better articulating screen design (like the S1H) that way you get the best of both worlds.
I could really use IBIS on my X-T3, but can’t justify the upgrade right now. If Fuji doesn’t bring Classic Negative and the new AF to the T3, their so called “Kaizen philosophy” is dead. Other manufacturers are making huge strides in FW updates and Fuji, the one who started it out, is REALLY lagging behind
I agree with you guys. I love the Fuji ecosystem and adore my XT3. I don't shoot video preferring stills and I concur that the autofocus plus IBIS plus improved tracking are very worthwhile for me in what I like to do. I've had the XT4 for a couple of weeks now and notice improvements in all the areas I was looking for. I hope Fuji stays the course and ultimately can bring animal face detect into the picture like Sony has. That would be something I would get very excited about. :-)
I bought one of these and I absolutely it! I had to sell my beloved Sony gear (laid off needed the money sadly) but I bought this as kind of an acceptable "downgrade". I gotta say gotta say that after a few days with it I don't really have any regrets. The AF isn't as good as Sony's sure but it's still very capable. This is my first APSC camera I went right into full frame Sony's from the get go and it's all I've known for years. I love this camera, I just wish there were some more glass options (what I'd give for some native Sigma Art lenses).
@@jimee998 lol thanks, now I'm just trying to figure out the lense situation. I have 3, one of them is amazing which is the 16-55 2.8. But the other two I kind of don't like. One is the lil 23mm f 2.8 (it's so noisy). And another is a cheaper zoom the 55-200 3.5-4.8.
I just got this camera and am really happy with it so far 😁! Here is my first impressions with footage if anyone is interested - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QlE1_EmdzX0.html ! 📷🎥
For most situations f1.4 should be fine. IBIS of course doesn't freeze action. I have an XT3 and if I just cared about stills I wouldn't think about the XT4.
Had the XT-2: I like the optics and the vintage feeling, but it slows my photography down. Fuji was not the right camera system for me. I switched to Olympus - beeing very satisfied. So the new XT4 is very interesting because of the new features. Fuji is one of rare companies to hear, what people really want and give it to them in the next model. Respect. It is not mine - but it is the best APSC I know.
1 Because I had to adjust aperture, time, ISO by knobs. I prefer at quick menu in camera personally. 2 Then: display was not fully articulating. So in some cases it took much more time/more effort to adjust the viewing angle. 3 The writing in camera display / EVF is to small 4 the handgrip was not so comfortable for long holding That are the main reasons why it slows me down.
That's where fuji excels. They make the cameras we ask for, and then continue to update the older cameras with the latest good stuff. My A7 is the cheapest mirrorless they make and it's already had several great upgrades. I want to like Sony. That autofocus is great but they keep putting out the same camera every year. The menus are convoluted and the colors are whack. The whitebalance is either baby-diaper orange or neon blue. And they come out again "we improved battery life and made the handle weirdly chunky" FIX THE FUCKING COLOR! I look like the blue man group. And canon put out a good product to begin with. But it's getting old and they are planning to put out a mk2 of the m50. They haven't done and probably won't do any updates to the mk1.
And the Fuji XT3 just received a firmware update with better autofocus. Fuji always showing respect for their slightly older cameras with firmware updates when other brands have given up. I can’t wait to see what they do with firmware for the xt4 over the next year.
The previous one was a pre-production model. They wait til they get a production model before they come out with a review. It was explained at the start of the video.
Hi, For the just video purposes I may buy Panasonic AG-UX90. Bit rate and 4K frame rate is low but for the just video ( i will not shoot myself ) would that be logical to but Panasonic? I will create close shots like the story of hand made products and all of them will be interior shots.
I would love to have an X-T4 with the display mechanism of the X-T3. It's sturdy, flexible, and allows photos to be taken in sometimes challenging perspectives. The new display mechanism is fragile and always somehow in the way when it is opened. In my opinion, the Vloggers have been given too much credit here.
Videographers don’t buy. It overheated after 13 minutes outside in 80 degree shade non direct sunlight. Returned to B&H. Now I’m seeing others have the same issue. Never should’ve went to Chinese production smh 🤦🏽♂️
It's a design issue. The body can't dissipate the heat while doing 4K60p. No machine of this size can. It's all hype and interestingly, Fuji blacklisted users who report this.
Martin Suen Thats sad of them. I was ready to jump ship from the S1 for personal use and use the xt4 for everything applicable.. the that happens the first day using it. Idk if I can ever buy a fuji again until I’ve seen many others with no heat issues. God soundin like Sony. Canon and Panasonic have never did me wrong. Had 2 Sony’s fail on me in 2 years time frame and went GH5 for 3 years.
@@JoeyTecuani Indeed. Especially with all the fancy specs on paper. Hope they'll learn something after this. What happened to your Sonys? I just got a A7iii due to limited budget knowing Sony got the worst QC. lol
or you can buy x-t3 which is still great camera than being said due to the local currency drop I hardly can afford now even x-t3, and can't sell my current camera :(
Great review and helpful. I have the XT-2 and have been holding off on upgrading. Probably not there yet as I feel it does most of what I need it to do. But this is good food for thought - thank you.
Hi Chris. Thank you for comprehensive Review. I am planning to buy my first mirrorless camera. I have 2 options in my mind, one is Fujifilm XT4 and other one is Sony A7C. what is your opinion.
The best review of the camera I've seen by far. From the updates you listed Fuji seems to be listening to you - which makes me extra sad you didn't join me in cursing the sky at the flip around screen.
I thought long and hard about going for the X-T3 or the X-T4 as an upgrade from my X-T1. For me it came down to a few things. 1. I mostly shoot stills, 98% stills. Video is an afterthought for me. If I do shoot video, it's going to be with a tripod/monopod or I will buy a dedicated gimble for the buttery smooth movement. As good as the IBIS is on the X-T4, for video at least, you can't match a dedicated powered gimble. For low light and stills, yes, I can see the advantages but again, I have OIS on a couple of lenses and two F1.4 lenses. If I need more, I'm doing long exposures anyway with a tripod. 2. The exposure mode control on the X-T1 is something I really like having a specific physical toggle for. On the X-T4 they use that toggle for video or stills mode. This is a downgrade for me as a still shooter. 3. The flippy screen, less useful to me as a still shooter. 4. The bigger battery is actually a negative for me as I have several legacy 126 batteries. So battery life is not an issue for me and changing to the X-T4 would mean added costs. 5. Added costs. Yes the X-T4 is a better camera, more modern, IBIS would be nice but internally from an image quality and focus system standpoint. It's basically the X-T3. The new shutter system is nice though. The deal I got on an X-T3 though was substantial. As a point of reference. Brand new X-T3 with the Fuji leather half case and the Fuji battery grip. For £1149. Where as the X-T4 was some £1549 for just the camera. £400 less with accessories worth almost £400 on top. Not having to buy new batteries at additional cost. It's basically half the price in real terms for a camera that takes the same quality photos and video outside of the IBIS and autofocus improvements. Which can be brought to the X-T3 with a firmware update (autofocus, not IBIS obviously). Will Fuji do this? I don't know because obviously if the X-T3 is 90% or more as capable as the X-T4 for a lot less money. It's going to hurt X-T4 sales and they need new sales. So for me it came down to the fact that as an enthusiast shooter, the X-T3 was more than I needed anyway and the extra costs of the X-T4 would just not be good value for me.
This is a really good breakdown. Granted, I'm biased, because I bought the X-T3 14 months ago, and want to feel good about not waiting for the X-T4. But your rationale for sticking with the 3 matches closely the kind of photography I'm doing.
Great review as always, fair and unbiased. I just got a used X-T2 as my first proper camera... I love Fujifilm already. Can’t wait to buy an X-T4 in 5 years time! 😂😂
Stadtjer it’s really great for photos/stills (I almost never shoot video), it does everything I need it to and it does it brilliantly. Really glad I got an XT-2 in excellent condition...
I hope Fuji does with their future cameras what Panasonic does with their full frame line which is putting tilting screens on their photo-centric cameras and fully-articulating screens on their more video-cameras. I'm a photo guy not much into videography so I don't want/need a screen like the X-T4's.
IMO, the best feature of flippy screen is flipping it over to protect it in storage or bad weather. With mirrorless I use the viewfinder that much more. I'd even buy a lighter cheaper rangefinder camera without an LCD display. Videographers often end up using a separate monitor anyway.
@@skyrunr I've had digital cameras/DSLRs since 2001 and that's never been an issue for me, personally. I'm a street shooter and one can't be very discreet with that thing hanging off to the side.
@@Clodrock My first digital camera in 2001'ish was a cp950 that offered the best of both worlds with their twist design. It also had an excellent built-in flash. The cp995 was a step back. The cp4000 was neat, but not on part with other digital cameras. I'd take a tilting screen IF it tilted down 90 degrees for shooting over people's heads in crowds without bothering people behind you. Besides, there are enough fixed screen options available. I'm sticking with my Z50 for now. Nikon doesn't make a single flippy screen FX body DSLR or ML.
@@LuckyDutch2011 if you have to choose between the two, I would absolutely go with the Fuji. I had a D7500 (basically a D500 but a liiiittle different) and bought an X-T3 for the video features. For stills, is just as amazing. So if you are going to buy one of those now, go with the Fuji, you won't regret it one bit.
Best colors! Fuji by far has the most appealing colors, the major Benefit. now everybody can see in this Video compaired to others. Thanks for presentation!
Hi all. I am purchasing the Fuji XT4, and I had a question. Is it worth buying it with the "kit lens" either XF18-55mm F2.8/4.0 or the XF16-80mm F4.0? I have heard good things about the 18-55, but the not so fast 4.0 F stop concerns me on the other lens. Or should I save the money and invest in a faster prime or the 18-55 constant 2.8 zoom? Just want to be sure my first lens is going to suit my purchase. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks for the feedback!
I own the 16-80 and am quite happy with it, but the Tamron 17-70 f2.8, which only became available on X-Mount a few months ago, represents a very enticing alternative. The only thing speaking against it is the regrettable lack of an aperture control ring.
And Fuji fixed some of the issues described in this video through firmware updates. Torn on the X-T4 or A7iii but I can't say Fuji isn't doing all the right stuff.
I like the older screens better because I like to use it as a waist level viewfinder often. Though I think it would be cool to do both like the new Panasonic camera but that's a really beefy screen. Maybe someone will make a slimmer version in the future.
I would love an xt4 to go with my 16-55. I end up using the 18-55 or 10-24 with my xt20 just for hybrid shooting, but the xt4 will be my future. Hopefully sooner than later
Anyone noticed 3:13-3:16 before the turkey insert, suddenly lost focus on Chris's face. One month earlier , a Sydney based Chinese photographer 悉尼顾俊 couldn't stand that sudden losing focus in his XT4 review and ended up returning his XT4. Long static interview style shot, for 1-3seconds, XT4 will lose focus randomly. Not sure if firmware has fixed it.
I love the 16-55 2.8 and this looks like a great combo. Time to sell the X-T2 and make way for this camera in my shooting life. Great review - nice to see you guys back in the Rockies. The only thing missing was fishing, and of course, Jordan crying. 😀
It's nice to see a company listen and add most of the things people wanted. With that being said though. With this camera you are basically buying a 2 year old model. Sure it was ahead of it's time back when the XT-3 launched. I mean it wasn't ground breaking but at least they were one of the first to do 10 bit and 4k 60. Other companies could as well they just chose not to. But over the last 2 years it received many upgrades to it's firmware to further improve and make it better. Problem is, the XT-4 uses the same exact CPU and sensor. And Fuji themselves have said it's about tapped out with room for larger improvements. I don't know about you, but I do not feel comfortable spending 1700 dollars on a camera that will not have the longevity with substantial firmware updates that we see with just about every company these days. Why buy this knowing that it's about as good as it's going to get? Unless it does everything you expect it to do. Personally as much as I love the design and interface, it lacks in a lot of areas. And with Sony, Panasonic, and Canon all about to drop some game changing cameras. I just don't see it being relevant very long. They have held the thrown for a minute, but not improving the CPU will really hurt people buying into this. Especially knowing the X-H2 is right around the corner and will be a lot better in probably every way. I do think it's a great camera for what it is. It definitely is the best APS-C camera to date. However the price imo is not justifiable. And if you are not in dire need of a camera right now, I highly suggest waiting a few more months as like I said, things are about to change big time.
"This puts the IBIS on the same level as micro 4/3 cameras from Panasonic and Olympus" -- not quite. CIPA ratings aren't everything. Here's a recent test: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DF4pEY9DsGo.html
I just got mine a few days ago to replace my X-T2 and the IBIS is great and the tracking af is awesome as is the lowlight performance. I’m of course talking about from a stills photographer perspective as I don’t shoot video. It’s Fuji’s best X-T camera to date.
Main complaint I’ve heard is it makes it harder to shoot low when doing stuff like street photography, the old style is a bit easier to run and gun with for that (both narrower profile and faster to swap)
KrisFlatlander48, I’ve used an articulating screen for low shots, literally putting the camera on the ground and it works wonderfully. For waist level shooting I just pull the screen out 90° and tilt up, never all the way out. And this is how I use my X-T4.
Hey guys thanks. Would you recommend the ronin sc with this camera? I’m using the 16-55 2.8. Edit: I bought it. You can balance it by using one screw in the spacer instead of both. I also remove the eye cup 👁
King of the APS-C bodies? Nikon D500 would like to have a word... But yeah I mostly agree, I'd rather have the XT-4 for anything besides wildlife and sports.
Could you comment on the IBIS-related(?) fan-like humming noise problem in the X-T4 and, I guess, also in other IBIS Fuji cameras? I just bought a used X-T4 and noticed this noise. In a quiet room, it is audible and is recorded by the internal microphones on the film. I found user statements that this is normal. Even statements from Fuji support were quoted. Is indeed this noise a normal phenomenon? I haven't seen any review so far that mentions it.
Basically it is a "Wannabe"-Camera. Yes, it is a great camera and there is no doubt about it but, alomst every stills shooter is going to complain about the small sensor, less MPs compared to Z7, A7R3,Panasonic S1R and a Z7 and a A7R3 aren`t that expensive anymore. The auto focus (even so I never use AF) is still behind the competition and it is hard to fix with an "old" sensor and an "old" CPU inside. Screen resolution has become mediocre and so has become the EVF and still even the amount over battery power almost doubles it is just by about 50% more shots. You could solve this with a newer CPU, more efficient LCD(and it is still so thick), EVF and so on. And almost every video shooter is complaining about the headphone jack. I want a Fuji, which is straight forward a stills camera, just with state of the art tech inside. As long as they don't deliver it I stick to my XT2. GFX is too big and heavy. The full frame competition has less fun of use. Maybe Leica will be a go some day and if Fuji doesn't come up with something great in the future I saved enough money for that. Like I said, it is a great camera, but it is not a video camera, it is not an huge upgrade for stills shooter(even so when I love to work with IBIS cameras for stills because of light situations) and with the new screen they are fancy but not practical. Another lovely great camera with too many flaws for my needs.
It wasn’t working on my X-T4 until I realized that I had to do a firmware update on the camera and once I did that my iPad Pro said I had to do an OS update. Once I did that everything is working beautifully.
I'd love this camera, just a bit out of my price range... BUt great for a lot of the shooting I do. I guess I'll get an XT-30 II and make sure not to get that one wet.
"This puts the ibis on the same level as m43 cameras" Are you serious? Unfortunately, it is far behind m43. Can compete with nikon z6. It's better than sony. Great tracking, much better than xt3? Better but it's hard to see the difference. Hit rate is practically the same. Price? A bit too high. Xt3 +battery grip costs less, but no ibis.
@@highdough2712 Admittedly, the answer didn't come to you until I saw your question... I thought he might have been referring to continuous autofocus, but thought that's quite a stretch... And then it clicked ;)
The XT4 looks like being the camera of the year. Great video as always, easy to watch and great information for photographers and videographers. I am considering the xt4 and your video really helped me.
Slow memory was likely the culprit. I shot a 3 hour event on my X-T3 indoors right before Covid happened non-stop, (consecutive 30 minute clips) and it didn't overheat once. The X-T20 I had running as my second cam gave me a heat warning several times though
Not entirely sure, so don’t quote me on this, but I think any camera with that small of a body, with ibis, shooting 4k60 would overheat. You’d be lucky if you even got 10 minutes of that on a sony😂
