This camera is only produced for Fuji advertising and only available to press and influencers to hype the Fuji brand. Limiting the availability helps create the unwarranted frenzy. Go for the Ricoh, at least you can get one if you're willing to wait a week or so. Or just wait for the XT-50 and throw a pancake on it if you insist on Fuji.
@@bsalvis I'd argue that this camera really needed no influencer models to be sent out for marketing, but it's absolutely wrong to be saying that it's ONLY available to them. Many buyers have been getting their models, and it really does seem that they're doing a lot to be getting as many pumped out as possible.
It would have to be more severe than that. He's done 35mm lens reviews before, so he could stomach it. It would have to be like, a month shooting his fishing videos with 35mm only. I'm open to other ideas! -Jaron
@@lordofgonzo get him an olympus vitage zuiko 35mm with an adapter..... but in color, because he tents to go black and white whenever he does not like color rendition.
Thanks so much for actually shooting the whole segment on the camera you're reviewing. The static handheld video with IBIS looks great. As this is such a popular camera, it would be a good opportunity to review smaller gimbals with it for more active/walking video.
We don't need you to eat food you don't want. We want Chris to shoot only 35mm lens (or the equivalent focal length depending on the crop factor) for 1 year.
The whole podcast crew out in the wild, always a treat. Informative review as always. Personally, I managed to jump on the hype train early on release day and scored a silver one. Fun camera and it’s just really nice to look at. I guess it takes photos too, but mostly it’s just nice to look at
If Fujifilm is smart (and they are), when using the OVF the sensor is shifted to mitigate parallax, thus reducing the maximum range it can move for IBIS. 7:24
I wondered if it was even simpler than that. What if the EVF screen (which moves down and right when you switch to OVF) physically gets in the way of the IBIS? Maybe there's just not enough space for both while keeping the full range of movement of the IBIS?
I live in SF and have used the X100s since 2006. This week I used the VI for production shooting in place of one of my 1DXs which is what I use. It worked so well.
Buy an X-T5 instead. Almost the same size and you can put whatever lens you want on it. That's what I did. It cost $100 more for the T5 body. (I already had Fuji lenses though).
We got this a couple of weeks ago before an extended weekend trip, and were insanely happy. We usually shoot with an R8 with an 24-70 F2.8 and find that we are bad at grapping it when walking around. It seems bulky and obtrusive on the street. But in 3 days we took about 1000 pictures on the X100VI. And the wife like using it a lot more than the big R8+24-70. So big thumbs up from here.
Loved this episode - Really like the contrast of the many test shots between the two of you - worked really well - now I want a new Camera... THANKS for that!....
@@CrispyJacketStudios Canceled the X100VI preorder. It is bravo sierra that I’ll have to wait a year, or more, to receive this camera as I preordered on the morning of the announcement. Fuji discontinued manufacturing the V six months prior to the VI announcement. Why didn’t they start manufacturing the VI six months ago? The XT50 is a good alternative to the VI. Piss on Fuji. I've been waiting for this review....live vicariously through Chris and Jordan While I wait for my pre-order (are you listening "Fuji Canada & The Camera Store"?)!!!
Great review. Had mine (in black) since its UK release on 28 Feb 24. My first x100 series. Really enjoying it, including taking it to Switzerland for skiing, city visits, family days out and hiking. I have the WCL too, not sure the TCL used case for me is yet made. Thanks for your views. Oh, and I subscribed so looking forward to you fulfilling your challenge!
Hi all, loved the review...... I can never see the point of video on this model. I wish Fujifilm would drop video and concentrate on getting better battery life. Cheers Ian.
I LITERALLY placed my pre-order after seeing the PetaPixel's first impression video in my feed...I think that was around Feb 20th? I'm still waiting for B &H to fulfill my order. I'm hoping I can get the camera by July.
I have an A7C... I... fail to see how this is better than slapping the zeiss 35mm 2.8 into it and call it a day. or even just go with my a6500 and the sigma 18/50, almost as portable. If I want to go ultraportable might as well go rx100VA.
You're missing the point. It isn't "better". That's not why people love it. If you don't, that's ok, but no one is buying this camera because it is "better" than some other setup. You're not breaking into new intellectual territory by pointing this out.
Chris Thank you -great review as always. At the 10 minute mark in the video, you are wearing a small case, presumably, one that accommodates this camera. Can you tell me what it is. I’ve been looking for a small case for my X100V, equipped with Haoge square hood. Thank you.
I've just recently bought the predecessor from a 2nd hand online store, and I'm so looking forward to holding it in my hand and playing around with it, until my pre-ordered X100vi arrives in, what, 6 months(?). World is crazy.
I am thinking of doing the same to get a feel of using a similar camera as the summer here in the UK will probably pass this year before I receive mine. Just wondering how much I might lose when it comes to selling the 100V which is currently selling for £1,500 used.
Loving my X1006 - coming from an original, then a T, then an F and a V it really is an amazing evolution. Oh and I exclusively shoot plain analogue OVF.
Must be nice..you guys have three!..while for the majority of us, we are still waiting on our pre-orders..hahaha awesome insight as always..thanks guys..
Glad to see more people hating on 35mm. Super versatile focal length but it's the one I despise the most. Also amazed you guys could get a hold of not one, but three cameras!
Love the formfactor of the X100 line. I had the T, but the AF wasn't quite there, IS would have been great and a tilting screen would have been great. So i changed to a interchangeable lens - Fuji (and kind of regretted selling the T). The X100VI is now almost the perfect camera for me and it is just pure joy to use.
Great video, thanks for sharing. Selling my x100v to buy the x100VI because of the IBIS and better cropping. I am surprised that very few talks about the built-in flash... it is very unique together with the leaf shutter. 📷🙏🏻
If you complain about the 35mm lens then you've entirely missed the point of the X100 series. I've had the X100V for over 2 years now. I would miss the 35mm focal length more than I want a 28mm focal length. The whole point of the 35mm is that it's a general purpose focal length. You see, the part of a photographer's brain that is constantly thinking, "Maybe I should swap lenses, or zoom in, I wish I'd brought my whole camera kit..." is freed-up with the X100. You have what you have, complaining won't help, so get on with taking photographs. I ride a single-speed bicycle a lot. It's the same sort of thing. When you have 22 gears you are weirdly never in the best gear ("Maybe I'll change up, or change down"). When you ride single-speed you just turn the pedals and look at the scenery. You're mind is free to do what you're supposed to be doing.
I’ve had an X100S since release, and it’s a fun walk around camera. Obviously, the VI has many improvements, but the general use cases are the same. I absolutely agree that it would be more useful with a 28, 40 or 50mm equivalent lens. This is also priced too high for what you get compared to other Fuji bodies. Take the viral hype away, and this would fit nicely in the niche of a niche that it was in before TikTok. If you want something in the Fujifilm system that takes just about the same photos as this, get an XT5.
Yes, except you can't add an ƒ/2 pocketable lens that close focuses to 10CM and no build in ND. I have the excellent Fuji 30mm ƒ/2.8 macro on my X-T4 or X-A7 for semi pocketable stuff, and am happier with 45mm equiv @ 2.8, and even closer focus - but it's not the size of the X100 series.
Great video, very informative; everything that I wanted to know about the camera was cover. It’s great to know that the 40mps and the ibis actually work and inform the images. Excellent. (As to Sub’g, I couldn’t see a box to tick ? I did press the Subscribe on screen, but that didn’t seem to work either …. )
I've been so tempted for this camera, with the small form factor and the 40 megapixel quality, so even at the range, I could crop without too much quality lost. But I wonder if I'm just being swept by the hype. Thanks for covering this camera. Its image quality is amazing and the article is helpful.
I've been having an absolute blast with the X100VI. I use an FX3 and A7IV as my professional cameras so having something that is so compact and portable for those times where I want a camera, but don't relish the idea of lugging my heavy and more expensive gear around, it really is amazing. A lot of it is also just the approach I take with this camera, and how different it is from the way I typically shoot. Everything jpg + raw, no editing, SOOC. It's freeing.
I got an X100VI on day one & LOVE it! I have Sony a7CR & Sony a7Cii for landscape & pano & nature images, and the X100VI is just FUN & EASY for everything else.
@@jolimabecause you can swap lenses. If you're just starting out, you might find you don't like the 35mm equivalent focal length of the VI. With the XT50 you'll be able to swap lenses. TBH, if you're just starting out, buy a cheaper second hand camera and save the money for a couple of lenses to find out what you like and don't like (most cameras built after 2015 are good enough). It doesn't make sense to drop $1600+ on a fixed lens system as your first camera if you're serious about getting into photography but unsure what you'll like. Don't follow the hype, the VI won't make you a better photographer and there's a ton of alternatives with more flexibility and a smaller price tag. You could pick up the XT30ii and two or three lenses for the same money, for example.
@@JamieFurlong thx for the answer - makes a lot of sense. Actually I had the x100v for a few months and adored the form factor (doing mainly street photography so far); but I wasn’t so happy with the 35 mm and the ibis and sold it again. I had tried some other Fuji bodies in the shop, but back then then pancake lense just seemed nice a small as well was sharper in the x- then in combination with other bodies… Now thinking if the x1006 with wide converter could do the trick or I should go for a changeable lense system
@@jolima if you're already familiar with the form factor then you're definitely in a better position to answer your question than I am. I'm not really a Fuji user and only own three Fuji lenses, all pancakes (I have an old XE2S, which I love). If you like the form factor it sounds like there's a 50mm and 28mm adapter, which covers all your street bases, but you're still using the same lens. With interchangable there's a lot more options when it comes to lenses, but maybe this isn't the most important consideration for you.
I don't mind the 35mm as an option. But as a fixed and only option, it's hard for me to swallow, and I would also prefer the 50mm in this case. It also needs the accessory to be weather resistant, so I would be stuck with the 35. It would be great if they made other focal length options. Even better if they made a full frame version with a series of compact interchangeable lenses. The money is in the accessories, so I see them releasing something like that in the future.
I think for a fixed camera, its not pocketsize engough. Ill go with my Ricoh, as a realy smal camera. If i go with the 50mm i can grab my xt3 its not so a big differenz in size.
Appreciate the detailed breakdown! I need some advice: My OKX wallet holds some USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (behave today finger ski upon boy assault summer exhaust beauty stereo over). How can I transfer them to Binance?
Used to love 35mm equivalent. Still love the x100vi in principle and it means I have a camera literally in my pocket when I might have none at all. But i find myself drawn more and more to 28mm, 40mm and 50mm these days. And have a 23 1.4 for the x-t5 for one lens one camera days, which I already don't use enough. The plan was to replace it with the x100vi for this purpose. Would I take it on a trip to japan or any big trip? No. X-t5 and 3 lenses will nearly always make the kit. Two camera carry with a tele or telezoom on the x-t5, a good option. But heavier than an extra lens and changing lenses. But as a compact option with familiar controls and output, that means I have a camera when I otherwise wouldnt, and for putting subjects at ease, it's a great option. Just rather expensive if you have to buy at full price compared to a 23mm f2 lens for 1/3 the price - even if not quite as good. I wasn't sure if I'd keep it, but creating custom presets that really reflect the nature of the camera and type of photography I'm more likely to do with it really helped me grown to appreciate it more. Just using my x-t5 presets made me miss the performance of that camera. It's a great way to distinguish the cameras some more, even if a bit artificial.
I have been watching your videos for years and years, so it was no surprise when I heard Chris complaining about 35mm being “the worst focal length”. I was wondering if he could explain that position sometime in a dedicated video. I have the opposite opinion, as I feel 35mm focal length best emulates what I see natively with my eyes. Of course, that makes me curious as to why Chis hates this focal length. All the best.
For anyone who’s getting FOMO over the X100vi, I’d highly recommend looking forward to the upcoming X-T50. Compact size, lens options, IBIS, and 40 mp (and presumably a lower cost). If I already didn’t have the X-t5 and X100vi, I’d be looking at that as my first budget option.
I wasn’t a believer but I got the cam and it’s miles ahead of the V in speed, image quality is also better no matter how much people claim 40MP isn’t a big jump. AF-C is now usable compared to the previous AF generation, close to my XH2 considering the lens doesn’t sport a LM motor
The hype is that a lot of RU-vid photography influencers have so many cameras that they can add a fixed lens, fixed focal length camera for the times when 35mm is suitable for them. I think a lot of photographers see these videos, decide that they, too, can be an award-winning street photographer, order the camera, and have it sit on their shelf.
@@ProbablyAnAmateur Yes, having two cameras and using them is very typical. I was specifically referring to the fixed prime lens camera sitting on a shelf.
I bought a used XPRO2 for 600 and a used XH1, with Viltrox 56mm f1.4 and batterygrip (and some stuff) for 800 used, added a used 18-55 for 200 and a new 23mmf1.2, for a grand total of 2000 € You may decide who has the better deal. I also have an old Leica D-Lux , that i still use and love.
Had to wait a huge 6 weeks for mine. Had the V before. Certainly worth an upgrade if you can get a good price for the old camera. The colour rendering above all else is improved with the lovely 40MP camera. Don't get the fuss about Reala Ace though. Definitely don't upgrade for that. Just use provia, with less saturation, a tad more clarity and less contrast. Few mention this, but the build quality is every bit as good as the V. If anything the quality of the dials has improved and has a bit less plasticky wobbly feel. And yes you do notice the lens is a tiny fraction longer. I think that's why there's a slightly deeper lens cap - to try to hide this a bit. Some might complain about the crop factors in video, but I actually use it to my benefit to get a bit closer to the action without the TC. A real shame the digital teleconverters aren't available for video, but this is one way to get around it! That teleconverter is rather big. The wide angle converter is tiny though. Tap to track really surprises me. It actually works.
I remember a long wait to get my hands on the X100S back in the day. Loved the camera. It ended up being a "gateway" to the Leica M for me :-) I still have the X100S though I don't use it as much these days. It used to be in my briefcase back when I commuted to work every day in the pre-pandemic era.
Tx for the very interesting and real review. You forgot a lot of things, cause the flipscreen doesn´t work in Portrait. The D-Pad is missing, the camera is far from being perfect. Fujifilm messed it up to the point of not being able to deliver amounts demanding the market.
I’d love to see a video where you compare the new trend of younger people ““ who shoot in film then scan the film to turn them into digital images. Are the film based images as sharp as images produced by this Fuji? If either is a little softer, does it spoil the image? Is it less professional?
There are lots of “” older people who have been doing that for years and have all the answers you're seeking, but we're not talking because we think the younglings should have to suffer just as we did…
I've had an X100V since it's launch, loooong before Tiktok / Influencers blew this camera up. It's sadly stained the discussion around this camera, it's simply a joy to use these cameras and the X100 VI looks even more awesome. Does it replace a full interchangeable camera body? Obviously not, but people act like thats what people are doing with this thing.
Nah, nobody thinks you're replacing a full frame interchangeable system. They just want the evangelising to stop. The X100 people are like door to door jehova's witnesses, if they were also vegans. It's a 7/10 camera. 8/10 if nobody releases any competing compacts. Let's stop talking about it now. 👋
Another use I have for the x100 series is to carry it while walking with a long telephoto on a heavier FF body so I don't need to change lenses for wider scenes.
Received my x100vi two weeks ago. Sold my x100v. I, too, find the OVF just a gimmick and use the EVF. In customizing the functions I discovered that by activating "3D" level vs "2D" (3D adds a virtual horizon) the OVF is disabled. At first I thought my new camera was defective. Spoke with Fuji support and together we experimented: it's the 3D function. But I don't use the OVF so it's irrelevant. I love the new camera and can handhold slower exposures. I don't use the tracking AF. Access requires too much menu diving. (Sony does it better - on my a7CR and a7Rv I have subject tracking on a custom button and target selecting in a Fn field). When hand holding I prefer to focus with a center small spot then reframe and fire. I have the touch screen disabled since it moves the focus point when I don't wish it to (less of an issue on the Sony bodies where I can fold the screen closed when not needing it). Most of all, shooting with this gem is like using the cameras on which I learned 70 years ago as a child: my dad's Leica IIIf rangefinders.
Hey Chris, you can always put the WCL on it for a wider view. 😉 As usual, great review from you folks. As for me, ibis is tempting, but the X100V, XT4 with zoom lenses, and DJI Pocket 2 Creative Bundle suit me fine for now. Rather than upgrading what I have, would prefer to get a HoverAir X1 "pocket sized flying camera". And a new bicycle. 🙃🙂 edited for typos
I've always been a stills photographer (other than the odd video shot on my iPhone travelling or of family). I would love to understand more about different video formats. I'd love to see an episode where Jordan talked about the applications of all of these formats. For example, if I was shooting a video of one of my bands for RU-vid, what would be the best format? What about for broadcast on a TV music program? What would be required there? As far as the X100VI ....I wish Fuji would bring out an XE4 replacement so I could have a compact camera that I could set-up with different lenses for different applications.
I hope Panasonic and Olympus take notice because both have IBIS technology and can easily produce a similar camera. Even right now, you could use a GX9 or PENF with any of the pancake lenses (Panasonic 12-32mm, 15mm, 20mm, or Olympus 14-42) and have a pocketable camera with similar features. Less megapixels (20MP vs 40MP) but also less money.
Chris has never liked 35mm, but the its till one of the most preferred lens choices for travel and street works. Still think 28mm would have been better though. All that said when Chris was @ DP he did a lot of 35mm loves and hates, fair play too him hahah
worth noting is Fuji's release of the new xt-50 in mid May. Almost an x100vi but with interchangeable lenses. No built in ND of course, but IBIS, the 40mp sensor, and the new processor should be there.
I can confirm it’s pretty great, but not any better than any of the previous generations were at their time of release. My first of these was the x100s quite a long time ago now; but looking back at my photos they look just as sharp as this one does. AF is definitely Improved though - menu is as bad as it ever was but fine.
I wanted an X100VI, but didn’t want to wait forever, so I got an X-T5 instead. I haven’t bought a pancake lens yet, but my theory was that an X-T5 with the short lens would be pretty close to the X100VI, but with interchangeable lenses. I don’t know all the differences between them, being new to Fujifilm, my impression now is that the XT5 is a significantly more complex camera, it is taking me longer than I expected to learn how to use it reasonably well.
They are 28mm and 50mm (FF equivalent). I've tried them and they are fine but if you're gonna use them frequently you might as well get an interchangeable lens camera like the X-T5 or X-E4 and use dedicated prime lenses, it's way less fiddly.
