finally a video that uses it in the dark like it's intended. All these reviewers going to the brightest environments to review this lens are so annoying.

I know this question is maybe ridiculous, but do you remember how much it impedes into the actual frameline (if at all) on the X-Pro3? In either case: thanks so much for making the video! I still think you're one of the absolutely best reviewers of Fuifilm equipment, you bring an interesting context to it and often put things into a good perspective (your XF 50mm f2 review I've watched many times because of how you talk about the roots of that focal length both in adapting 50mm lenses for full-frame in early digital with APS-C and Leica having 75mm). PS: You're wife's fashion game is insane. Always looks the part! 😎

Rented one for a graduation photoshoot just to check it out and I actually fell in love with it for my uses. Don’t think it’s financially viable for me but im thinking about it. The weight is insane though

Ya, there's something about this lens that's special. It has its issues, but I love the look. Price-performance-size-weight in comparison to other f/1.0 AF lenses, there aren't too many examples, but I think it's a good compromise. The XF56mm f/1.2 for those who are only concerned about bokeh, since there isn't a huge difference.

Just a quick note to let you know how much I appreciate your channel. Really, you are a terrific presenter. You come across as very friendly, honest and authentic. I am beginning to notice that Canadians are such fine people. Corny but true. I'm Australian BTW. I'm very patriotic. But I tip my hat to you. Anyway, why should you need to fix the fringing in post? I would assume that the fringing would be fixed automatically in the camera. My personal philosophy is that digital cameras should practically eliminate post processing. At least for the JPEGs.
@bigheadtaco
@bigheadtaco 3 года назад
thanks for the complement. As for the fringing, you're right, this could be something fixed in software. Hopefully Fujifilm can update the firmware if enough people complain about it.

I kind of get the idea that the 56 f1.2 is similar in the results but this lens basically gives you a fullframe f1.5 portrait prime, and it’s the same size and weight as the 85mm 1.4 GM. So size wise it’s perfectly fine for what it does and negates the need for a FF body if anyone wants that 1.4 Tele prime look
@joenowak2881

I have the 56mm f/1.2 with the 50 f/1.0 on backorder. Not sure I would get $1500 extra value over the 56 but they got me with that f/1.0 Marketting!
@bigheadtaco

Sometimes you just gotta have the 'ONE'. You'll love it, especially the accurate low-light autofocus on the X-T4 or one of the newer bodies with the X-Procesor 4. I do like the colour on this lens, it's very pleasing. It works well with both Classic Chrome and Provia, which is rare.
@jp2503

Personally, I just hated the motor in the 1.2 so much that I sold it because it kept front and back focusing even in decent lighting and it sounded terrible. I wish they would just update it.

You work really well with this lens - they're fantastic images, and the colour output seems especially good. A comparison which would suit your style would be between the Leica SL2 + Sigma ART 85mm (new and remarkably light DN/"Digital Neo" version), and the X-H1 + F1.

I think this is a very balanced review of the lens. I think I am good with my XF 50mm f2, although I’m still hoping that Fujifilm will update the XF 56mm f1.2 and add weather resistance and fast autofocus.

Thanks for watching. I do think a mrk II is in the works, but probably still 6-12 months away at least, considering the 50mm f/1.0 just released. I think the XF 35mm f/1.4 will get a mrk II first though
@dhaug
@dhaug 4 года назад
I agree with the aperture ring feel. The idea of one that "locks" onto f/1 is a nice suggestion - likely quite doable by FUJIFILM. Love my specialty lens, full of character like the 35 f/1.4!
@bigheadtaco
@bigheadtaco 4 года назад
the XF35mm f/1.4 is specialty but also 'normal' because of its size, weight, price and field of view. It's their best-worst prime, if you know what I mean. It needs a mrk II badly!!

I really wish someone would do a comparison between the 56mm and the 50mm where they shoot something like a regular sized car. I’d want to see how it compares when both are shot from the same distance to the car AND I want to see a comparisons where the 56mm is shot from further back so that the car fills the frame equally to how it was in the 50mm shot. Both at their maximum aperture. That is a comparison that would be super helpful to me, but I can’t find anyone doing it.
@MarcS4R

i guess the fringing is normal with these high aprture lenses. the Noctilux 0.95 is much worse in this regard.i thought that Fuji firmware would remove the CA in camera for some reason. because on my GFX glas i never get any
@bigheadtaco
@bigheadtaco 4 года назад
Yes I've tested all the GFX lenses, they are just world class optics. The GF110mm f/2 does not colour fringe even though it's a fast lens. I too felt Fujifilm could fix it in software, hopefully they will. Thanks for your input

Beautiful narrative review, with lots of practical observations for photographers considering this lens. Leaves me having to decide whether to swap my 56mm. Probably will. I was left with one question - how did you end up with such a classy lady? (Don’t trouble yourself about it, though. I ask the same thing about myself and my wife.)
@bigheadtaco
@bigheadtaco 4 года назад
Ha thanks. The XF56mm f/1.2 has the same problem as the XF35mm f/1.4. Great optics in a dated design. These two lenses are begging for a mrk II version. As for Camera Girl, we’ve been together since 1991. It took some convincing but I knew I’d end up marrying her 7 years later :-)

All shot RAW and processed in LR. When it comes to lens reviews I prefer to shoot RAW so I can see how the lens behaves with different film simulations. As well I want to see the maximum potential of each image.

That lens weight almost as much as my camera with a 18-135 lens, but you can't argue with the fact it does the job. And don't give away the color correcting secret make it black and white. LOL Truthfully I love black and white I started doing photography with a manual 35mm film camera, developed my own film and made my own prints now its a few clicks, which I enjoy because now we got filters and LUTs.

@@bikecommuter24 the good old days of having a relationship with your photo lab person. I remember those good old days. As for the move from Canon to Sony, there really isn't a 'bad' camera manufacturer out there. Everyone makes great stuff. Currently Sony is ahead of everyone from a technical standpoint, but we know it's not always about technical superiority. I say learn to master whatever you have and change only when necessary or if you can afford the time and money to do so.

@@bigheadtaco very true, I'm good with my Sony, I had a big heavy DSLR the 7Dmkii and a smaller SL2 for video and I just wanted one body and lighten my load, I liked the a6xxx series but the short battery life and grip on them didn't fit me, then the a6600 comes along fixes those issues.

I don’t what to come across as being horrible. Your never fully honest when reviewing as it’s clear that this lens is not for you. I would love it if you could be more honest as it’s great to see photography from your perspective as not every lens by FujiFilm is great for you. I would use it on my X-Pre 2 with a gimbal setup for filmmaker. I would appreciate it if you could do a video test as this kind of lens is the FujiFilm version of the 50mm movie lens that is very popular with artists filmmakers. Thanks ✌️

Can't believe that FUJI let this out to the market - patchy at F1.00 - less sharp that the older much cheaper 1.2 - also the AF motor sounds like a boat. Best wait for the MK2. POOR JOB FUJI.
@bigheadtaco
@bigheadtaco 3 года назад
The first MK 2 lens in the X Series line-up is the XF 10-24mm f/4 R OIS WR, which took 7 years to update. I think you'll be waiting a long time before there's a MK 2 of the XF 50mm f/1.0

@michaelwhiles5282

@@AlexanderBischof - what is your point? My comment is that several years after a 1.2 and having spend a ton of development money Fuji let this on the market. Canon's new R glass and Sony's G glass are clearly a step ahead despite Fuji's 'best' efforts.....which are clearly not best.
