Is the Fujinon 50mm f1 better than the Fujinon XF 56mm f1.2? And what about the Fujinon XF 50mm f2? Does the extra half stop of light justify the size and weight? Who is this lens for and how does it fit into the Fuji lineup? These are questions I asked myself a lot in the last couple of months and this is my review and sample shots using this lens.

Thanks for this review. Based on this and other reviews, I’m sticking with my 56mm f1.2 AND my 90mm f2 for portraits. When they’re on sale, BOTH of these lenses together only cost $150 more than just the 50mm f1.0, and TOGETHER they weigh only 100g more than just the 50mm f1.0. Asa professional wedding photographer, especially with weight limits on planes, I’d rather carry the 56mm f1.2 and the 90mm f2 instead of the 50mm f1.0.

I just added the 35 1.4 to my kit which include the 23 f2 and 56 1.2. I might replace the 23 f2 with the 1.4. Any recommendation ?
@Nathansmithphotography
@Nathansmithphotography 3 года назад
@@antigonooo Personally I would stick with the Fuji, which is what I have. That was actually the first prime that I bought with Fuji. They didn’t have the F2 version when I bought it, but I still would’ve opted for the 23mm f1.4 version as it’s sharper at F2, doesn’t get soft close up or wide-open like the f2 version.

I have the 50mmf1, this lense is incredible! I have rented both 56mms but they are just not giving what an f1 can show you. The only bothersome is the 50mmf1's weight! lol! If attached to the camera body, its like holding 3-bodies together!

I use the 56 for professional headshots and portraits. I love it but I’m definitely tempted to get the 50. At this point, I have no need, as the 56 is very good for what I do. But I do desire that 50!
@cris_photography

I hear ya! Felt the same but… nothing in the 50 f1 version is a must for me (as for you, the 56mm does it all as I need it to)… but that been said - this 50 is VERY nice!

All 3 🤩😜 I LOVE the 56 f1.2 to be honest and that won’t change any time soon, that being said, I this the 90mm has a great compression while the 35mm is more versatile. Cheers

Don’t see the need for fujifilm to build this lens when they have the 56mm which is a more desirable focal length for portraits. If you are buying this lens for the bokeh your clients won’t notice the difference between f1.0 and f1.2 more so when the 56mm has 10mm (85mm vs75mm) when adding the crop factor. And you’ll be hard press to find any major differences in bokeh as well. The only two advantages of the 50mm f1 over the 56mm f1.2 are focusing speed and 1/2 step of light. And with update 4.0 to the X-T3 the 56mm is focusing super fast. So basically you’ll be paying almost double the price for 1/2 step of light and WR if you have an X-T3 or an X-T4. At least for me right now is not worth it.

I shoot the 50-140 and 16-55 2.8 lenses for portraits. It would be nice to have a faster option. I’m thinking the Viltrox 56 1.4 might be a good choice. If I’m going to buy a prime it’s either got to be inexpensive (Viltrox) or at least weather sealed. I live in Canada so harsh conditions are a reality for half the year.
@GreedyMonkey69
@GreedyMonkey69 2 года назад
Hi Lyndon, your comment was posted a year ago, what did you end up going for? I have the same lenses as you on an X-T4 and I'm looking at getting the 50mm f1.0, primarily as it's weather sealed (as you know, the 56mm isn't) which is a factor as I live in Scotland!
@LyndonPatrickSmith

@@GreedyMonkey69 I just stuck with those 2.8 zooms and bump up the iso when I need to. I’d still like a fast portrait prime - I think Sigma just released one. Not sure if it’s weather sealed though. Let us know what you choose.

Can I give you a tip having your cameras bounce around like that on a harness actually damages everything about your camera cameras were never designed to be bouncing around and hitting the side of your body. Just giving you the tip that it’s not good you’ve got a lot of componentry inside a camera and it does not to be designed to be bouncing around. I never ever would carry my cameras like that. If I need to cameras they go on a case and I pull one out and I take the other one out if I’m on a shoot, then I will have it strapped to my body so it can’t move but bouncing around like that actually damages the camera

Thanks for the quick reply! Just curious, why not the 50mm f1.0 or the 50mm f2.0?
@cris_photography
@cris_photography Год назад
Because the 50mm f1 is HUGE and for street I don’t find it appropriate. The 50mm f2 is very nice and sharp and small - so good for street but the extra stop you get with the 33mm f1.4 makes a much better bokeh for portraits and it’s not exaggeratedly big. But y’a - those 2 could do too if you like ‘em!

@@cris_photography f2 is a great lens, please don’t forget that. Everyone is so hyped about bokeh and max openings. But let’s not forget when we only had film, we made great foto’s amd bokeh was something that you would buy just a lomger lens for. The f1 is not a magic pill. F2 is sharp, fast and has also WR. Great for street photography.

Oh I also own a 50 f2 as well as a 23f2 for weddings during the day when you need a small, unobtrusive and compact yet effect set of lenses! I made a couple videos about this lens specifically and believe me - I love it. But for some specific work I much prefer having that extra stop of light (low light for example) and the shallow DOF. My all times favorite though still is the 56 f1.2 love the size and the rendition. That one will be my number one for a while I think... 🤩

50mm f1.0 much more sharper wide open than 56mm 1.2, and even sharper than 56 1.2 APD. I own all of them, so I know exactly what I'm talking about. Focus speed is also faster on 1.0, and I think it's not a last thing. If for someone these things important as for me I strongly suggest to buy 50mm 1.0.
@cris_photography
@cris_photography 2 года назад
Thanks for your feedback! I don’t doubt the sharpness, but to me having double the weight and size the entire day, unless you absolutely need to and you shoot wide open (which I don’t normally do) is pointless. Of course, for a regular shoot where you want to shoot wide open, you need tue autofocusing speed and you want best and sharper results then yes - 100% would take the 50mm f1. It’s good to see what other Fuji shooters use thanks!
