The "Marseillais" (Poutine's look alike) is the great french actor Marce Bozzufi, Charles Bronson's foe in Valdez Horses & mostly the hitman chase by Gene Hackman in the infamous car chase/subway in French Connection

This movie has one of my favorite stupid movie lines ever when Testi shouts "On the count of 3, zig zag like hell!!" during that boat chase.

'Cause I've already figured out where you'd insert "right into this JumpScare!" (THREE times!)," Late for... FootBallPractice" and "Linda Day George, show 'em how it's done!" But this R-Rated-by-1984-standards film would only draw a PG-13... and only two BarfBags... by today's standards.

Great stuff Mike. This was one of the first pile of Blue Underground DVD releases I ever bought, right behind the essential Fulci horror titles like Zombie, Gates Of Hell (as I always think of it) and The Beyond. I was very excited to finally access some violent polizioteschi outside the more mainstream U.S. appeal ones familiar from the video rental shops, featuring Martin Balsam, Franco Nero, etc. Contraband did not disappoint. Today I'm especially enamored of Umberto Lenzi's action packed and occasionally ultraviolent polizioteschi like Almost Human. Great appearance here by the pouty, hulking Italian character actor Luciano Rossi (lipstick scene and shot in the back bedroom scene)

Great selection Mike I think it's a great idea to throw a little love at the more sick horror oriented politzioteschi. Maybe even the similar spaghetti westerns, I'm thinking of titles like If You Live, Shoot with the inimitable Tomas Milian. Interestingly Milian headlined in plenty from both genres.

"The Littlest C Block Ever" Finally, that Warwick Davis prison drama is happening! His horse fell victim to a killing frost, like happens sometimes when you plant too early in the spring. "Do you kids even remember Lech Walesa? Christ, I'm aware of European politics." Never forget when Celine Dion rapped her way into the Steve Miller Hall of Fame by rhyming "feelings" with "deal is".

Testi, interesting guy. Stuntman on the Good the Bad and the Ugly, worked with Fulci and D'Amato, dated Ursula Andress, became a kiwi fruit farmer, then got into politics and ran for mayor of Verona.

Somebody put out an A.P.B. on Mike, cause he killed it this episode! Again! An Italian making a mafia movie? Nooo. This movie proves why Mike is the Norman Bates of how a movie rates. So many good jokes in 1 episode. Now I'm like 3 month old milk. Spoiled...& fairly lumpy. The Mario bros joke about 🍄's brought a tear to my eye... cause I had something in my eye. The Viagra joke was hard to follow, but Mike nailed her... I mean... it. I'm gonna start walking to Babylon, stay SICK Mike! Listen to AUTOPSY!!!!🤘👹🤘

Because sometimes you have to break up the "so bad it's good" with something that's "so good it's good". Except for the main theme tune though, it just comes back again and again and again. Oh no not "Do-bah Do-da.....Do-bah Do" again! This, High Crime and Almost Human, favourite Poliziotteschi type films for me.

I first saw Contraband on Venezuelan VHS and was surprised by it. Then I got the DVD which looked better but it was the same thing. This and Conquest showed Fulci could do other genres. As always great review and cool video Mike!👍

I saw the movie 54. I don't need you telling me how old I am. I can feel it in my humors. That beat over that guy talking was exactly like something that I would have been listening to when I was young. Back when things were good. The beat made reminded me of a Lionrock song, or at least a remix. The way the voice over sounded was also reminiscent of these various samples that would be placed in things all across what the artists I was was into. Now everything is just getting duller and duller and the magic has been choked to death.

Bonus points for the Wild Fire reference…..lol….and yeah, I’m old.

I loved Wildfire when I was a kid. Now I have to listen to it or it will be stuck in my head for the rest of the week. Damn it, Mike! You always do that to me.

I've never seen the words "idea conceived" in the credits for anything. Honestly surprised it took nearly three whole minutes for a Fulci eye zoom. 3:07 Are really supposed to believe those are actual people?! Holy shit, that's hilarious.🤣 "If I admit to being a liar, does that mean I'm being honest?" That was legitimately good. 11:02 Why is only half the scene in focus? Goddamn, sending a man his wife's underwear then making him listen to her being violated is some sadistic shit. I'll always wonder why Fulci has such a vendetta against eyeballs.

The Poliziotteschi genre is one I'm utterly ignorant of. I really should check some out.

Love this one, a genuinely good gangster flick and one of the best of the Poliziotteschi despite coming in the last years of the sub-genre. Fulci delivers! His cameo was absolutely fantastic as well, if I have one serious complaint about the film, it’s that we needed more Don Fulci! 😂 Would love to see you cover something like Deodato’s Live like a Cop, Die like a Man in the future if you’re going to continue looking at these films, but I understand if it doesn’t fit the splatter pattern we’ve come to expect from Sick Flicks, Contraband is _by far_ the most violent in the sub-genre that I’ve seen, so it does stand out from the crowd.

I am ashamed to admit, I was not familiar with Contraband. I decided to check it out after watching this video, and wow. What a gory, sleazy, nasty movie it is. I wish Fulci had made more crime movies, as this was fantastic. Thank you for bringing this movie to my attention.

This movie must be to Fulci what The Tough Ones was to Umberto Lenzi: definite proof that while you may be known for your crowning efforts in one particular subgenre as a filmmaker, it doesn't necessarily mean you're entirely confined to it.

This is not a "mafia" movie, since it's it's set in Naples and focus on contraband, a well known activity in the city in the 70s and 80s, especially cigarettes. The criminal organization in the area is called "Camorra", which is basically the Neapolitan Mafia just as Lin Kuei are Chinese Ninja So, the correct term is "Camorra Movie" :P *"The more You Know" jingle sounds*

I love that the explanation for adding more violence to the script was to improve the pacing of the movie. Also interestingly one of the smugglers Giuseppe Grecco, the son of a convicted Sicilian Mafia member, would pick Fulci's brain about film making. He'd go on to make 4 movies in the 1990s.

Mike my man, I had to take a hiatus from all social media for the last couple of weeks, but believe me I try to catch up on your latest vids over the next evenings. I only got into poliziotteschi during the last year and Contraband is one large gap in my collection. Here in Germany it was issued only once in a limited edition of 3.000 copies in 2001, so you can imagine the prices for this release now. Although I have not seen the movie yet (the video was a great appetizer) Fabio Frizzi's score is an absolute acid dream come true and regularly shows up on my playlist. And Fabio Testi is one of the great unsung badasses of cinema. In 1976 he starred in "The Big Racket" (by Enzo G. Castellari, another master of italian exploitation), which is a mixture of police thriller, The Magnificent 7 and Death Wish. Highly recommended!
