I'm 45 and switching to graphite was the smartest thing I've ever done. Maintained my numbers from 25 years ago and something you didn't mention... WAY nicer to my elbows at impact as the shafts are a more natural shock absorber than steel. I was dealing with "tennis elbow" from practicing too much, and that improved significantly. Was definitely concerned about shot dispersion when I first switched, but shafts have improved so much over the years that wasn't an issue at all. Per usual, great video....

I used True Temper Gold shafts in my irons for almost 20 years. I noticed, with increasing frequency, that after a round I could definitely feel the arthritis in my wrists more. I moved on to a set of Ping G irons and wedges 3 years ago and had them made up with the Ping Alta "R" graphite shafts tipped 1/2" shorter to add 2-3 cpm. BIG difference! Not only did I notice the things like sound, feel and weight that Rick mentioned but the graphite shafts also seem to dampen the vibrations and my wrists no longer ache after a round! I'm a fan!!

I used to hit my 7 iron 145 meters. Now with regular Tensei graphite shafts... 170 meters on trackman, up to 190 meters on the course. Unbelievable. Straighter than ever, yes fly higher and the spin is just like yours in the video, more than steel. These things are just wonderful with a Driver swing speed of just over 100mph I now know I have been playing the wrong shafts for a long time. Keep up the good work Rick

Rick, your swing looks more relaxed with the graphite shafts: like you're only using 85% of your power. With the metal shafts, it looks like you're swinging too hard - almost like you're trying to live up to your shaft stiffness. Why don't you take your buddy, Peter, out to the course and have a match with the both of you using graphite shafts? I'll bet neither of you would be trying to kill the ball and you both would hit straighter. Bluntly put, golf requires both power & technique; technique is best executed at 85% power. If you swing as hard as you can, you lose accuracy. Let's see you beat Pete go head to head one more time..

Played matchplay (and lost) against an old tour pro who plays every shot at 80-85%. Was Mr consistent and straight on everything.. (annoying draw on every drive) and he generated spin. He told me that if he needs to he can dial it up, but can play par golf all day long using that relaxed swing. Match the club to the swing to the distance.
@Bog2901
@Bog2901 4 года назад
SAS golf made a video about one length irons which made a similar point. Just for the longer clubs (3-6, set all being 7 iron length iirc), the shorter and consistent shaft length reduced maximum distance but made them easier for him to hit, so he'd middle it every time and actually gain distance (and accuracy) on average. Though it'd be best to run a mixed set since distance control becomes difficult with longer shafted 8-PW.

so glad you did this review, i went to graphite several months ago, REVELATION! My swing speed is at the low end of average, 72mph with a 5 iron, they have seriously helped me stop the balls on the greens. My wedges, wilson staff model, the extra clubhead speed, without trying, through the ball helps me stop them on a sixpence, never ever have i stopped the ball so quickly, i simply dont get it why everyone isnt using them, if more did the price would come more into line with steel then we would all be happy, another super video rick, cheers

I play Callaway Apex CF16's (so I guess they're 4 years old now?). When I was getting fitted I first tried the standard steel shaft and liked the way it felt. The fitter suggested I try the graphite shafts ("What am I - an old man?" - not quite but close). The clubs felt lighter, head speed was up and I was hitting five yards longer. Sure, it was a few hundred more but I'm very happy with the decision. The Callaway shafts are UST Mamiya Recoil which are a reflective silver so if you aren't looking closely you wouldn't know I wasn't playing steel shafts.

20 years from now Rick, you'll be playing graphite or whatever they have equivalent. Retired a couple years ago. Demo'd various heads and shafts at the range. When I narrowed it down, went and got fitted. So Callaway Apex Pro (2017) with UST Recoil 95 graphite shafts in regular. I had stiff shafts in my wedges. A year later found out they offered Recoil regular shafts for my wedges and switched. Swinging the wedges with stiff steel felt like hitting the ball with a baseball/cricket bat, no give. Much better with the Recoil shafts. 69 years old and handicap has dropped to 9. Best round this year 73. Just wondering , have you ever hit balls with a midsize grip? A few tour pros do. Mickelson being one. You might give that a go.. Love the vids btw.

As a 27 year old high handicapper, changed my steel irons for Graphite shafted irons and it has considerably improved my game and handicap. So much easier to swing and hit, especially considering my muscles aren't built like a tour pro and I don't hit my irons flush every time. Helped with my confidence too. I think Graphite shafts (apart from the price) is a very good way to go, especially for mid to high handicappers. Nice video Rick. As always! From Zambia 🇿🇲

Bought mavrik iron set with graphite shafts and I love them. As rick said, the first thing you’ll notice is weight but as far as club control goes, my dispersion has improved significantly and my distances have increased but that’s mainly attributed to loft differences between my old set and the mavrik’s. I finally broke 80 last week so I’m super satisfied with my choice. I was shooting in the 90’s when I bought them and have been practicing a lot so they aren’t magic wands but they definitely helped my game.

I also developed "golfer's elbow" with a new set of Ping irons, Eye 2+ model with their steel shafts. Therefore I reshafted with graphite and it made a big difference in the shock to my elbow so it healed OK. What I did not like with the graphite was that it seemed to deaden the feel of a hit too.

He just said that graphite shafts are more fittable to each person, although pricier.

Yeah composite shafts (which are what "graphite" shafts are) have such high technology now, you can do so much with it compared to steel. That's why they're so expensive.
@TheChasyn23
@TheChasyn23 4 года назад
So I bought my 2nd set of irons and those were my first steel shafted irons. When I started hitting inconsistent shots with my steel iron I would change back to the graphite shafts and it would almost hone my swing back in and "recalibrate" my swing. After about 2 weeks of playing with the graphine I would switch back and my shots were way more consistent and I shot better. What I did notice in my shots and your 7 iron shots on this video is that I could produce much more spin with my graphite irons. My graphites were wilson blades and my steel were the Calloway Xr18s
@william_hartman
@william_hartman 4 года назад
I think a better way to see the difference between graphite and steel shafts would be to use the launch monitor indoors with 2 sets of identical irons except for the shafts. That way you can accurately tell the difference between club head speed, ball speed, launch angle, distance, spin, etc. Even just comparing the SW, 7i, and 4i to get an idea of what the differences are like rather than having to do the full set. Maybe a future video!
@jamesgallegos4665
@jamesgallegos4665 4 года назад
As you get older, graphite shafts will be more forgiving and make playing golf more enjoyable. Key is, you need to make the right choice in graphite shaft makers. Steel shafts are pretty easy to make when it comes to shaft stiffness, flex and torque but trying to make that happen when you go graphite is another universe altogether! I've been playing graphite shafts for a long time and the one thing I found is that graphite is more whippy and twisty than steel! Graphite shafts are usually softer and torque is unpredictable. But the STING I get (to my arm) when I mishit a ball with graphite isn't anything CLOSE to the numbness I feel after mishitting a ball with a steel-shafted club! I think graphite is the current/future for most of us amateurs playing golf. The pros can play steel all they want and I will stand in awe of their accomplishments but for a weekend duffer who wants to enjoy the game? Graphite is the FUTURE!

I just got rid of my graphite shafted irons. Perhaps they had too much flex, but I found them to be very inconsistent on where the club head was actually at when I was striking the ball. This was most noticeable with the lower irons. I've gone back to steel shafts and like them a lot more. Personally, I'm willing to sacrifice a little club head speed for more consistent striking.

Control used to be a concern with graphite shafts in irons when they first became available. Some of the control issues were due to things Rick noted in the video regarding feeling the weight of the clubhead because people had a tendency to overswing the graphite shafted clubs which generated more shaft twist. The current tech is so much better regarding torsional stiffness so the clubhead twist is not an issue. I personally like graphite in irons because they also can dampen vibrations and add clubhead speed without swinging harder.

I’m in the same boat. I am a low handicap golfer and have 130g X-flex shafts on my 620mb’s. I am starting to feel like my timing is difficult to dial in, I’m thinking the graphite shafts might help with that and give me more head feel on my timing.

Rick, my evolution to graphite iron shafts been: Younger me - stiff iron shaft 125g a bit older 30ish to late 40s - stiff graphite shaft 105g Now, in my 50s - regular graphite shaft 70g It just allows me to play more comfortable and much much less body aches after the round. Is it more expensive, just a tad, but hopefully it will allow me longevity in this stupid game. 👍👍👍

I have grphite shafts on my R11s and for a female they help me get a bit more speed I think. Feel like i get more momentum with the heavy head ratio. I love them for normal shots, however, i find they are harder to get a controlled punch shot out of thinker rough - mine aren't stiff. Also when the ground is starting to firm up, its harder, as a slower swinger to get a good divot, sometimes feels like a ricochet. Probably wouldnt be an issue for faster swingers though. Great video 👍🏻

Recently found a 3 and 4 iron with graphite shafts in the trash after someone quit golf at the local course (lol) so I added them to my bag since I didn't own a 3 or 4 iron. Gotta say, the weight difference and smoothness hitting the ball are seriously noticeable. I'm way too cheap to buy new irons with new graphite shafts, but if you come across cheap used ones, you have to try it. It's really far superior to steel shafts in my experience so far.

Thanks for sharing Rick. I am looking at getting a new full set of golf clubs. I always wondered about graphite for irons. I too have always played steel irons for my 34 years of golfing, because I was always told they are more accurate. I just started getting back into golf a lot more this year , and I have been practicing, and playing combined about 2 to 3 times per week over the past few months. Unfortunately, I have developed golfers elbow, for the first time in my golf life. I was thinking lighter graphite shafts may help with it. I am okay with graphite now that I know they are just as accurate. I just hope the graphite shafts last a long time too.

Graphite shafts gave me back the ability to hit irons high again, and gave me back distance age had cost me in the previous 3/6 years. First set were the Rocketbladez HL 2013 model ??? I absolutely loved the feel and sound, still have them as a backup set. Now rocking a set of Cobra Graphite irons, love the feel and sound of them too.

I liked this video!! The one thing I remember when I was looking for irons when I started playing golf for my high school(2002/03) I remember seeing irons with offset heads and graphite shafts. They were actually cheaper then the standard with steel. I think the graphite helps players with lower club speed. The whipping action per say.

Wonderful video as always. I see that most graphite shafted clubs are usually more expensive than steel. Not my clubs, the price for graphite or steel shafted are the same price. My club brand is Thomas golf custom clubs. And actually the only difference is that graphite shafted clubs are longer than steel. That is the difference, the price is the same. But I hit the ball longer and more comfortably with my graphite shafted clubs.

_"The downside is you might hit it more to the right, more to the left, up in the air"_ This from a guy who has been using a graphite shaft in his driver and fairway woods for 20 years. Oh, and PING has no charge graphite shaft upgrade options. ca.ping.com/en-ca/clubs/irons/g710
@sebastienalbert1187

He’s talking for the irons. Using steel shafts in your driver and fairway woods would make the club incredibly heavy and almost unplayable. A graphite shaft will give you less control over the ball and less consistency on your Irons and wedges. On the other hand a graphite shaft is much easier to swing, and can be a great option, just in general for wedges and irons graphite will be less playable, will also be less consistent. Both great options depending on your handicap and ball striking consistency.

@kourt2469
@kourt2469 4 года назад
@@sebastienalbert1187 false again. You won't lose accuracy from using graphite. As somehow who fits golf clubs every day and has tested basically every shaft in existence there is no drop in accuracy from graphite vs steel. The reason you see tour players using steel is because #1 that's what they grew up using and are accustomed too. #2 it's easier and cheaper to make a 130 gram steel iron shaft than it is to make a 130 gram graphite and most tour pros use heavier weight shafts in their irons.

Can't complain of your "story" at all. I mean --- you've played blades before which ya know are not very forgiving including the familiar wedges...... the only thing different is the shafts and maybe grips. The comparison of the 7's told me the story ....... but then again, I've played graphite since my 1st "real" set (although they are knock-offs). I find them great... and on mishits, really no sting at all. Truly enjoyed the (my) verification Rick -- Thanks Be Safe

I would say there's a tremendous difference between stock graphite iron shafts and what you'd see from somebody like Steelfiber or Accra. I play 115g Steelfibers and there's almost no dispersion difference between them and steel. Just a smoother feel and less shock on my elbows.
