He is a Marxist. But a Trotsky Marxist. Which is different than a Leninist. Under Lenin, the idea was that the workers were not smart enough or capable of governing themselves. The Vanguard or intellectual elites would rule until some future time when the workers were capable of ruling themselves. Trotsky believed the workers would never be capable of governing themselves, and the Vanguard elite should rule forever. In addition, he believed the Marxist should use the capitalist system to gain as much wealth as possible, to use at a later date to further the global Marxist cause. Think foundations. I believe here lies the confusion. Btw, Trotsky was eliminated by Stalin.
