This is a full build, up to paint, of the brand new Sherman from Rye Field Models. It's a great kit, but will it cure my Mojo issues???.... Go grab a beer, get some popcorn and sit down.. it's a long un!!
You are right Nigel. Different skill sets for different model genres. Armor is much different than race cars. Your skills are exceptional. That is certainly not a beginners or intermediate kit. Well done!
Hi again Nigel. I posted a thank you awhile back when I was derailed by assembly of the track links, excuse the pun. Again you have come to the rescue! Assembly the bogies had me stifled until I watched your calm, logical approach to putting this component together. Moving parts are always a source of modeller’s anxiety for me. I like models that sit still and collect dust:). So, thank you once again for lifting my spirits with your generous teaching. You are a gentleman and a scholar!
I’m not a beginner, but I’m certainly not on your level, by any means! I bought a ryefield Sherman too, and I have had to put it aside out of frustration ... perhaps my eyes aren’t what they used to be, or maybe my hands are a little shakey, but the PE parts really did me in... I can’t seem to affix them solidly without copious amounts of super glue, which of course looks like shite afterwards... if I do get them attached with minimal super glue, I seem to be able to snap the PE off or bend the hell out of it right away! Oh how easy was life when I was a kid building models... PE didn’t exist in that world and I loved my results lol
Thank you very much for this video. Getting back into model building for the first time in nearly 30 years. I have just purchased this very kit and now I am really looking forward to getting started on it. The tips and tricks you have shared are going to make this build go a lot more smooth. Cheers!
Beautifully detailed kit but the P.E. is killing my model building mojo...Glad it isn't just me finding it difficult as I'm pretty new to the hobby. Thanks for covering this kit.
Just don't believe it......Nigel finished a kit! LOL - great vid mate - have this one newly added to the stash. A great guide for my future build. Cheers
Great video thanks, also just to let you know the weld seam on the turret is supposed to be there, Sherman turrets are cast in two pieces ( top and bottom), the mount on the rear of the turret is to store the .50 cal MG, the little bottle thing is a searchlight stored facing down and probably to late now, but the cupola vision blocks have a slight green tint to them, kind of like looking through a Coke bottle.
Doing the back shelf on the hull, not good, however could you have used a strip of L shaped rod underneath it to support it,it would not be seen if it was going to loaded with gear,i do agree with you, poor design, just a thought, superb guide to the kit and thank you, looks like a belter
I've just picked this up for a diorama and wanted to give RFM a second chance. I did their Sturmtiger with just the fighting compartment and the cleanup inside was a joke. I'm glad you've done the whole build online as it seems the Easy 8 is quite a lot better then the Sturmtiger. At least now I have a solid expectation of what the journey will look like.
Great looking model. Can't wait to see it painted. Your section on the headlight guard ended mid way. I presume that was where the profanity started. Those little PE fiddly bits can drive a man to drink.
Hey Nige, great to have you back buddy. It seems and sounds like you are enjoying this build.; mojo back then! Yay!!! Fantastic build, kit and video bud!! Keep em coming; Please! You going to Telford? Many many thanks
Welcome back. That is a good looking kit, I'll have to think about some armour kits. It's been quite awhile since I last built one. Great job, welcome back.
Great build/review Nigel , love the Sherman , but those tracks scare the heck out of me. Have carpal tunnel , so don't see myself messing around with tweezers. Maybe I can use Dragons magic tracks instead. Anyway , I see you got your modelling mojo back. Until the next one , Cheers, Tony / Bronx ,NY
I'm away to start the new full interior one today! Its stunning and a lot of kit my looks of it here! I thought it was going to be this kit just added the interior but it's not all new moulds and grey plastic now, I really really hope.the do an A1 and the A2 one one with the half cast n welded hull
@@NigelsModellingBench me to haha I'm looking at it now loads of grease guns with it look real nice I'm going to use the canvas option the last Sherman M3 a4 e8nwas that Tamyia one so doing the RFM A3 will be a massive improvement! I've done the same kit in the Tasca m4a3 but this thing just looks on another level altogether I love it already!
Nice to see you back Nige, but I think after watching the build - she's definitely a bit of a mojo killer. Personally I would've gone for a Tamiya shake'n'bake kit.
Love your builds Nige, I have this model but with full interior, I am really looking forward to building it. I think RFM are probably on a par with Meng.
That seam line on the road wheels is actually really there on the road wheels. However I’m sure in 1/35 scale it would be hard to see and especially after some use in the real world. There are pictures and discussion on the subject out there. I also remember “Coen” discussing it once on one of his Sherman videos. Unfortunately he has removed the all off RU-vid.
Thanks for sharing the build Nigel. There are a ton of useful Tipps I will use when I build mine. The problem you had with the kit are sadly typically for Rye field kits. I’m currently building the new Panther Ausf. F and it had similar problems. Cheers Max
Nigel - are you aware of any aftermarket kits or parts that could remedy the half-assed (for lack of a better term) working suspension system? The fix would be a functional shock absorber. The tricky part being the correct tension of the spring within the shock cylinder, accounting for the weight of the tank and proper shock compression when the suspension is articulated. Definitely a design challenge. 🤔
I agree. I spent too much time yesterday searching through late war photos to see which set to use. A1A2 early war, A5A6 mid war, and the solid sprockets late 1944 onwards. 😊❤😊
Hello friend I really appreciate your video I have mine too but I don't think the seller did not check the item so I have a different turret which is a Sherman T23 turret variant I think it is the first turret of the easy eight 😅, that is the only problem with my kit just sayin by the way your build is so cool 😊
Uhm hello again 😁, I started building mine too, did you glue the suspensions of it before you paint it? Or do you have a video while painting it hehe just want to know how do you do it 😊 thank you nigel!
Hi Nigel, cheers for the help. I’m just about to start out on this kit. Just wondering have you pre-primed the parts before removing from the sprue frames?
Hope it was a rewarding build. The tracks are a mojovator in disguise.I love thier Panthers w\interior,ive started another one. They have a 1\35 modern ATV w\interior coming out, looks daunting..Have a dilemma, wether to use Simple 'steel' 1\32' mustang seat from ZM PE set,or the kit version.Different designs.Done PE strap's and latches holding P51 Oil tank onto firewall,i was dubious about cutting plastic parts. But with some RB and HGW fabric harnesses as back up, i went for it.
No the fabric ones,i got HGW&RB sets with kit.And ZM int&ext PE,the ZM/Eduard int. has an early 'SJ' ? Steel seat included, having trouble choosing which to use,no info on attaching it though. No i made the PE oil tank straps and buckles, but was wary of cutting the moulded srap's off,but i thought even if i fuck up,i could manage to Knock something up out of a set of spare fabric belts if the PE strap's got mangled.Went perfectly though. The RB fabric belts 'look' good,HGW \48 and \32 are same,RB ones look more fabricee for \32.Ill find out when i make them.Swann morten craft handle, check it out, safer, easier and £1.89,only has 2 choices of blade, straight No1,curved No2.Steel handles. You just slide blade into handle and tighten the wheel.
@@darronhedges5873 got you now, just looked at the PE int set. I would use that PE seat all day long, it will be more realistic and in scale than the plastic one. I find the HGW to look more fabric like once they've been stained with a dark wash or coffee.
I'm with you 100% the lovely glossy A4 Eduard\ZM instructions don't show how to fit it.I feel terrible, dog booked in for castration tonight.I can't look him in the eye.
Good day Nigel - Thank you for making this video - really helped me as returning to the hobby after 35 years or so - found the bit about putting the running gear together really helpful but would you believe when on the last one, when I was about glue the last hinge on the shock absorber - ping it went - spend two hours looking for it (Can't find it) - currently given up - any suggestions on how I work around this??
Thanks to this video I went and bought this very model! New to the hobby but am enjoying it. Only thing I struggle with is paint. I use acrylics and keep leaving brush strokes. Any tips? I’m using it straight from the pot but do I have to dilute it? And do I need to prime first? Loving the hobby though and your videos Nige
@@matthewwoodward2738 sorry.. I forgot all about your problems.. I have been told in the past that Humbrol acrylics are awful?? If you watch the early stages of my "Monty's Humber" build, you will see that i use Revell acrylics on the brush, heavily thinned with water and get great results. I love the Revell aqua paints, thin them and you'll get a tough smooth finish.
Just stumbled on this set, is a lot of glue required for it? I've done some model kits before before but they've been the plastic ones which just fit together. Also what glue do you use?
@@NigelsModellingBench OK cheers, but what about this kit specifically? Do you recommend it for someone with a little but not a lot of kit building experience. Apologies if you mentioned it in the video I haven't had the time to watch it yet.
God I hope we finally get a proper ally interior tank by RFM based on this exterior and then takom can start doing those, too. I would love to build some but they're all nazi tanks atm and I don't think this hobby needs more nazi tanks. Give us shermans, cromwells and churchills with interiors plssss.
www.williammaloney.com/Aviation/PattonMuseum/M4A3E8Sherman/index.htm Hi Nigel here is a link to some good exterior photos of the easy8. Great looking kit and as always great instructional video. I have been looking around for a resin engine for this kit but all I could find is an old Verlinden radial engine for the earlier Sherman’s. Have you run across any after market out there. Hope your mojo is on the mend. Take care.
Thank you for the video, but I have to say this kit is Horrible for the Price point lots of fit and engineering issues the bogies are an absolute nightmare. I am working on my now and it's like really dude. It stresses you out because of how much money you spend on the damned thing.
