I was literally stormy crying for how Lacanian the movie is. I was studying some theories from Lacan and Zizek and this film make all I learned make sooooo much sense.

I watched the movie and came straight to this after. Needless to say what an absolute pleasure it was to listen to you interpret it. Loved every bit of it, made some notes and will be coming back to it later after re-watching the movie. Thank you so much for uploading this and for the entire series. Much love to both of you!

The useless precaution EEAAO Lacan - main idea - you are your own symptom. Symptom - obstacle perceived but if overcome, your identity would fall away. (i.e., work is constitutive of your own identity). Parents -only thing having parents is not having parents. Democracy best of worst. Wouldn’t be you without it. EEAAO - daughter becomes villain because too many pathways provided by mother (pure potential). Successful psychoanalysis - realise you are own symptom (don’t need to be overcome). The desire to be another version of me is already a part of me. Failure to inhabit me is me. Everything bagel - night of the world, nihilistic. Not a void of nothingness. Everything bagel. Subject = substance for hegel (bring all particulars together = the absolute). All experiences in one point (an infinite overlapping). Overlapping acess to every reality. Nihilist - turgonov - son denys possibility of returning to family but denies every other possibility. (cannot detach but wants the parent to know about their situation). Wants independence but also prove their independence. Like your parents precisely because didn’t want to be like that them. EEAAO - spiritual sequal to matrix. Matrix - binary. See through illusion to world of Truth. EEAAO - undermines this. Why me? Undermines chosen one. You are a person who fails at everything. Fail to be other selves. Good at unskilled. Working class - not want identity of laundry, have to have it. She has attributes of dilettante like karaoke (hobbies) but because filed under business = suspect. Unled lives = way of coping with Laundromat is to say look at all the other things i could have done. Because you are stuck in your life, opportunities seem to present themselves. What makes different worlds attractive is that they are other. Unled lives make it look fulfilling. Sustained through fantasy. You are own symptom - fulfilling career would eradicate identity. Don’t wake up, embrace attachment to symbolic order. Child presented infinite possibilities = feels overhwlemened = nothing means anything = abyss of relativity = hysterical relationship with other selves = wanting to drag everyone into this together = mother, of all realtiies, she wants to inhabit her own. Successful psychoanalytic session. Go through the fantasy = symptomatic because relates to unacknowledges desires of current life. Once realise other lives aren’t real but fantasies that sustain you in order of being living in. Moment of acceptance. Realise universal within particular. Universal exists within reaffirmation of choosing own life (contigent life becomes necessity). Being becomes contigent (choosing to be now breathing is not your choice), whereas choosing to live every day, not giving up, struggling life, that is necessity of contignecy of being born first place. Everythinbg bagel only existds because daughter wants to show mother her state (her desire to remove mother is sustained by showing mother, so its a pardox). Mother = undergoing problem, not being person want to be. Sees sdaughter of familiar pattern. Electra complex = has filial relationship to mother, but will fail to have that if becomes own person. Daughter upset at being shown as lesbian (because secretly wants marker of difference from the family ooo). Symptomatic relationship with the girlfriend. Every relationship with another person is to prove to parents you are your own person. You are your own symptom . movie ends = love as universal that disrupts universal from within. Negation of negation. Love short circuits logical order. Contignent way find love and then affirm it every day = necessity of your own autonomy. Love = not logical. Doesn’t fit within incentive sutrcutre. Not convenient. Disrupts worldview, takes away comfort. Love as suffering. Now can be jealpuis, thinking of partner, not okay if not around. Disupts unity of being, but also breaks free of partenal relationship to symbolic order. Love illogical but gives you every power that you want. Allows you to access full multitude of being. Break up - physical then have to break up with idea you used to be (and then how you related to the other person). Have to take off pedestal to function. Past can idolise, can be rosy (nostalgia). Melancholy - hold on to own loss. Not cherishing past btu loss of the present itself. (Quentin in sound and fury). Holding onto the pain (because then at least you have a little bit of the person itself, wow innocence of past caddy). Huge fear of letting go of pain. Negaton of negation again (physical then psychological breakup). Once let go, can move forward. Melancholy is a sort of control = at least i have my pain. Cant take it away. V v good lecture. The symptom is the real. The symptom is the contingency of the necessity. Pain hold onto as miscrognise as subjectivity own being (but necessary). To uphold symptom is to uphold fantastical relationship to symbolic order. Real = think you need to overcome sustains the overcoming of it. Embrace the symptom. Not overcoming. Paralysis of begal of everything. Embracing worst life = becaue one inhabit. Then get release from abyss.
