Elephants are the most beautiful, majestic and smart creature on the planet. Sadly, due to those same reasons, they are still used today as working animals for elephant riding, circus, logging and so much more.
But what happens when an elephant that only knows how to live with humans, is no longer needed. Well thanks to amazing people like the team at the Elephant Jungle Sanctuary, these elephants can get a new home with shelter, care and unlimited food.
Website: elephantjunglesanctuary.com/

These sanctuaries are sometimes a little controversial but after spending a day with them and see their work first hand, we can say that we fully stand behind what they are doing.

While bathing elephants itself isn’t harmful, it’s the process to get the elephants to go against their natural instinct to avoid humans that’s often unethical. That’s why truly ethical sanctuaries usually have an observe rather than disturb approach. This makes sense if you think about it. In nature, elephants would not normally come in direct contact with humans. So how are these operators ‘training’ elephants to bathe with unfamiliar humans? As a traveller, you’ll never know what happens behind the scenes. Therefore, the best approach is to visit sanctuaries that encourage observation rather than direct contact with elephants. I’m doing I school project on elephant abuse in Thailand, I go to UWCT in Phuket and I came across this video and I thought I should say something, a truly ethical elephant sanctuary would be like Phuket elephant nature reserve for example.
@DaveMani
@DaveMani Год назад
I do agree with you BUT, the elephants in those sanctuaries where born and raised in captivity most of the time so they couldn't survive without human interaction. The other thing is that yes it would be much better to leave them alone in those sanctuaries so they can just live peacefully but sadly no one is funding those organizations so tourism is truly the only way to keep them afloat so they can keep feeding and taking care of those magnificent creatures. We also did a lot of research before doing this video at this place and I can assure you that no one is more passionate about the well-being of elephants than these guys.

You guys are really sweet. I don't want to rain on the elephant parade, but when elephants are still undergoing the kind of tragic mental (and physical) effects that are left from their previously cruel, grueling lives, they should not be put in a situation where they have to interact with humans like this. There are other sanctuaries, like Elephant Nature Park, where elephants like those you saw weaving and the one who wouldn't walk more than a step forward and backward, would not have to deal with tourists. They have areas where they can be away from tourists, where these elephants can heal, usually by being part of an elephant family if they're ready.
@DaveMani
@DaveMani Год назад
I do understand your point but here is my stand. These elephants need humans to survive for food and care so it would be impossible to cut them off completely as they lived in captivity all their lives and couldn't survive in the wild. In terms of bringing the tourists into the mix, I fo agree that it would be best if they were left alone with their keepers but these places cost a lot of money to run and for them to keep taking care if those rescued elephant they need the tourist money. Lastly, when we were there we truly saw how respectful of the elephants they were. They were telling people that when an elephant leave the group to let him be and not harasse them if they don't feel like it. All that to say, the only solution to this is no more working elephants wish we hope will happen soon.
@mariag4696

@@DaveMani It's so true, people are doing their best, and of course, not everyone has space to keep the recovering elephants in a more private area. It does seem like you had a very nice crew there. A lot of mahouts feel like the elephants are their own children. Yes, wouldn't it be great one day if it could happen that elephants could just be, and not have to work? People like the two of you are doing your part in helping tell their story. Thanks for all you do!

@Dave you two seem very nice and since you have a lot of subscribers I just want to make you aware of the potential impact you can have by promoting this/any elephant "sanctuary". Please do further research as to whether 50 stranges bathing an elephant every day is actually good for them or just a tourist attraction. EJS actually has a lot of bad reviews on Google maps where (even recently in the past few months) people stated that they left the tour sad and disappointed because it wasn't actually an ethical sanctuary after they saw how the elephants were kept and treated. You might have gotten a good experience, but the elephants might not have. All the best to you too!
@DaveMani
@DaveMani Год назад
Don't get me wrong, there is two sides to this. I fully agree that the elephants would be better left alone. That being said, this wouldn't be sustainable as those elephants need a high level of care including food, medication, land and team around the clock. The tourism aspect of these sanctuary finance the care provided to the elephants. Also these elephants lived their entire life around humans therefor I personally don't think that they are as bother as a wild elephant would be. These elephants fully depend on their caretaker and wouldn't be able to survive on their own. Once again, as much as I don't disagree with you, there is no perfect solution and nothing will change until the day that no one has working elephants.
@jacquelineperez2579
@jacquelineperez2579 Год назад
I think that you are missing the point and justifying your experience by ‘help them to make a profit as the elephant is expensive to take care’. An elephant being still for you to scrub it and have a fun time is still animal exploitation. I would like that you better promote places where animals are let alone and just being observed at the distance. Such places exits and they also make a profit, difference is that you don’t get to have a flashy video or an Instragramable picture.

True sanctuaries do not allow tourists to bathe or even touch elephants as that can be stressful for them. Also being in the water isn't very hygienic. You guys even noted how often they deficate. If you're bathing the animals I don't see how you believe this is a true sanctuary. Figure it out @davemani
@DaveMani
@DaveMani 8 месяцев назад
I understand your points. But the tourism is what keeps the money coming because as you can imagine it is very costly to take care of those animals. Also, after spending the day there, I can say that they are super respectful of the elephants. None of them are forces into the water. Some don't want to go sometimes and they just let them be. All that to say that yes, the best would be to just have them being taken care of without the tourism aspect but sadly, this is not financially viable unless the local government gets involved.

The word... sanctuary..is misleading. Its actually elephant tourism business. Many place rent elephants from other part of country for this.
@DaveMani
@DaveMani 3 месяца назад
I do understand your point but it's a bit deeper than that. These elephant have lived in captivity their entire lives as work elephants. They cannot survive without humans anymore. The sanctuary takes them away from the working places and give them a place retire. Would it be better if they would be left alone with the keepers, yes. But these places cost a fortune to run and tourism allows them to stay afloat. And from what we saw, the elephants are treated respectfully, they are never force to go anywhere of do anything. They go on their own to the baths and everything. All that to say, I understand people who are against these placed but I tell those people to find a better solution to finance the elephants then...
@pauleagle6281
@pauleagle6281 3 месяца назад
Elephant sanctuary place is the place where elephants retired. The sanctuary owner buy old elephants will take care of them until they die. However the elephants were rented to generate income and profit. When the rent expired, elephants were returned to the owner. The cycle of elephant is like this .. Work on hard labor and when too old then go to work in tourism. The word sanctuary is just a marketing ploy. It should be called... elephant park, sanctuary style. Well the elephants may be very old now and rent is cheap. You can check whether the place is really an elephant sanctuary or not by check on how many elephants the place own and how many elephants the place rent.

These elephants are certainly treated better than they would be treated if they were forced to haul logs in the logging industry, or to give rides to people, or to entertain people. Just the same, it does not seem truly ethical to bath the elephants, to feed the elephants and to generally play with them. This is forcing them to do some thing that they may not want to do. It would seem that a truly ethical sanctuary would have the visitors only observing the elephants from a great distance so that the elephants can live as free a life as possible, so that they can live a life that is closets to how it would be in the wild.
@DaveMani
@DaveMani 4 месяца назад
I fully understand your point. Here's the thing, the tourist aspect of the sanctuary makes them able to pay for the wellbeing of the elephants. They need staff, medicine, shelter and a LOT of food. And I can tell you from what I saw, they elephants don't seem to mind the human contacts as it's all they know. They are there because they lost their ability to live on their own. They are not forced to do anything, for the bath, some didn't want to come down and they simply didn't which was nice to see. Of course it would be better to let then be inside the sanctuary but there is no money...
