Polymer clay dragon sculpture, in progress! Now I am even MORE excited then the last video!! Putting those wings on this dragon really helped boost my confidence level.. All I had to do way try, instead of fretting. Still working to keep these video simple, learning is seeing. If you have any questions I will try my best to answer them.
It is important to bulk out the armature with foil to save clay reduce complications from baking clay too thick. What happens is the thick part is usually not baked enough, OR, if you do bake it enough the thinner part (like the wings) will be over baked, resulting it possible burning or browning..
The body area will still get a lot of clay though, and I may even add last minute foil if I feel its needed.
The tape is to protect the clay from the foil and the clay also sticks better to tape. Also, the seams of the foil can work apart during the claying part. Another reason I add tape.. Have you ever messed up and had to take a sculpture apart? You will have a bunch of tiny foil pieces in your clay, its a mess!
Thank you all for being a part of this project, this channel, and for all the help and encouragement.. This all would be nothing without you..

Too late! I have spotted your drake long ago! You do some impressive work! How long have you been doing this?
@TheBroodingTom
@TheBroodingTom 12 лет назад
About 2 years now.. But I don't sculpt as often as I am supposed too =/ I often just space out for days, my wife thinks I have a weird like ADD or something.. Or maybe I have a hidden "cool-down meter" Like some super power a video game character has! LOL! I have no schooling in what I do at all, I even failed art once. Sculpting was a overnight decision for me, after about 10 years of drawing. It felt like I did it forever..(I drew even less then I sculpt now) I need to pick up the pace! =O
@TheBroodingTom

Thanks! And wow, black?! I know you can bake longer then normal, or even at lower temps but at longer times.. But I try to follow the basic methods as to teach whats recommended first. Its up to people to experiment on their own.. I for one want to try the microwave out... Just to see what happens. It says "don't", but I have to know "why" LOL Maybe I will make a video [why NOT to microwave polymer clay] This way they know why and what happens without actually having to do it.. I dunno.. xD
@TheBroodingTom
@TheBroodingTom 12 лет назад
Every now and then I get that question.. So I made it a point to say that in the video for those that are new to polymer clay and want to use my "style" of sculpting to produce their own work from it. You ask me "are you sure" when I have baked over 17 different sculptures, in my oven, with tape inside them. To answer your question, yes, I am sure, without a doubt [as long as the manufacturer's instructions are followed. Which are printed on every package of polymer clay, regardless of brand]
@TheBroodingTom
@TheBroodingTom 12 лет назад
Any type of clay that shrinks cannot be put over a wire base, rigid form, or "armature". Because when the clay is fired or air cured it will crack badly, if not wind up completely destroyed. Polymer clay has less then 1% shrinkage, so it can be wrapped and baked around fine glass even!! And your welcome, no problem. =D

Very true... (if) I do it right, it could become a great referencing for future dragon makers.. I can only hope for something like that. But first, I have to succeed in making a awesome dragon.. Thank you so much!

to be honest.. i just bought my first car.. mazda 2 :) and its lime green.. so everything ive been buying lately is green.... so i wud say do a blend of different greens :).. and do some tears in the wings to look like hes been battered around abit.. (like in fights) :)

You can buy a whole pound of original sculpey for just $5... And that's what I used to make my larger King Cobra... I say go for it! You can always back out at the last minute and take it apart to save your clay.. Remember it wont dry out =P

Not really sure yet.. It could very well be hand painted.. That is a ways away though.. But actual color is yet to be decided. [inner voice screams GREEN] LOL! Seriously though, not sure.. What color would you do?

Answered the doubt that I was having: there's no way I can bake my sculpture with tape around the skeleton. Good to know that I can! Going to start my first oven-baked sculpture, and knowing that I can keep the skeleton tight and clean with tape is relieving. Thanks for the advice and sculpting walk-through. :)

It's called masking tape, I get the generic kind at wall mart. And yes its basically sticky paper. I use it all the time and had no problems at all, hope it helps you too. Just be sure to have all the tape covered with clay before baking. :)

Hey was gonna send a pm, and couldn't figure out how. I'm a cake decorator and I've been using polymer clay stuff as inspiration for edible sculpture toppers for a while. This was some of the most helpful stuff I've ever seen. Started out by watching the elephant video to try and figure out armature and ended up watching the full dragon playlist because that's what I'm currently trying to make. ;p Isn't that just the way it goes. It's amazing the crossovers in technique between cake art and polymer art. Thanks for the videos.

I've been doing polymer clay little charms for about a yr and a guy friend of mine just requested for his birthday in a few months a dragon so when I found this I was so excited. It's really easy to understand. When I make this it will be my first actual sculpture as Ive only done charms. Thanks so much for the uploads. I can't wait to get started. Just wondering, about how much clay was needed to finish this?

Thank you for making this video. I was inspired to make one myself but i ran into several issues. the wire i used wouldn't support the weight of the clay. >.> I thought that was no big deal I would just bake it upside down. Well after several days working on it making 1 cm or smaller scales all over it he got squashed under a grocery bag. -_- I will remake him but I'm going to use better wire next time.

hey tom! so i have an idea for the color of the soon to be dragon. i went to my local toy store and they had a bunch of dragon stuff which made me think of your project so, here is what i thought of... a burgundy red, a darkish or lightish green or maybe a purple i hope this helps :)

So tape doesn't burn when you cook the polymer clay? That's interesting. I never used clay because I thought the tape would catch on fire I always used plaster and compound.

can't wait to see it when its all finished,,before I started watching your videos,about 5 weeks ago,I tryed my hand at making a geko,just a small miniature one, just to see if I could do it,!!it went wrong a few times,but then it had a dragon look to it, so I thought,OK its transformed from geko to dragon, so I placed it on a flat beach stone or pebble, then, decided to add some glitter,,it ruined the whole thing,way to much glitter,but I still have him,to remind me not to make that mistake again ,basicly I spoilt it,even my dragon don't look happy!!

Thanks!!! And yes, watching it come to life is just as grand as seeing it done.. I agree! I sure hope it will be my best... And I am not sure, what you ask is complex. You see, once I make something it is like practice work.. Then I more on. Only when I do something several times could it be great, like my bigger king cobra.. So far I would have to say that one. But eventually I will start making things I already know to master them. Does that make since?

@TheBroodingTom

Not fire, but bake. Firing sculptures usually means a Kiln and air-dry clay. Polymer clay is cured at a much lower temp. 275º for 15 minutes per ¼ thickness. The tape should be completely covered as well. You see its not a very high temp and everything is fine, in fact I done ALL my work like this lol. But I'm also cautious and sit on a stool the entire time it bakes watching it. And yes we use our standard kitchen oven, the same one we eat from. Its all safe been doing it nearly 4 years now.

does baking affect the foil and the tape inside. Air gets released I read somewhere and can create surface bumps, but i guess one can always even that out with polymer clay. haven't used polymer clay yet. one day.
@3nertia
@3nertia 7 лет назад
The foil is metal and is usually used as a liner to bake in anyway. The tape is insulated by clay and the temp is relatively low. I'd imagine that if you take it out before the clay burns, the tape would be unscathed. I've seen/heard of people baking all kinds of stuff into their sculptures including various plastics! Their stuff seemed to turn out just fine ...
