I was born in South Bend. My grandfather was invited to teach at Notre Dame after WWII, which is how my mother's family emigrated to this country. My father worked at Ball Band as an engineer, then was transferred to New Jersey in 1967, at which time we left. Even though i can still find my way around town without a map, I can't help but think, this is so depressing. I'm glad I don't live there anymore. Downtown is a shell of its former self. I still remember when South Shore trains came all the way downtown, to the station at Michigan and LaSalle. And I remember when Union Station was still a train depot. Went to the movies at the Granada and State Theaters. Michigan St. is the main artery. It used to run straight through downtown. As a Catholic, I love ND. It's a special place and our family will be forever grateful.
I grew up during the same time you did. Respectfully, without the changes we most likely be a dead town. Note Dame would be the only thing keeping us on the map.
I'm eleven minutes in and this is already by far the best video on South Bend on RU-vid. Detailed and intriguing and full of the old PBS travel show vibes. I was born in South Bend and have lived here off and on my whole life. I learned so much from your video! Can't thank you enough for your time and effort.
I was born at Memorial Hospital in South Bend, Indiana in 1955. Graduated from ANDREW JACKSON HIGH SCHOOL in 1974. Played in the ANDREW JACKSON HIGH SCHOOL TIGER 🐅 BAND under the direction of Tom DeShone!
It has many opportunities however it is number 1 in indiana cities for the most crime. Gary is number 8. That’s a scary thought! If you don’t live anywhere near the hood then you should be ok. I will say a guy,53 was shot and found dead in an alley from a 20 something year old guy with road rage about a week ago. A few months ago there were 26 shots fired from my back yard at the house behind mine. I don’t even live in a bad neighborhood. The city has a lot of pleasant efforts made to improve the vibe, but they really messed up in indiana allowing people to carry guns without the need of permits. The city ordinance officers pick on people that don’t deserve it and turn a blind eye to really trashed out yards. I love southbend but the crime is ridiculous.
The city is not in development for new industry. South Bend has become the worst place to live in Indiana per capita per violence South Bend does not believe in bringing new industry to its town.
Goshen, Indiana is a must safer city with a real downtown. There are parts of the city limits of South Bend that are really dangerous, especially after dark. They didn't show the growing homeless population in the downtown of South Bend. I hope you don't mind getting panhandled by drunk and high people. The rank-and-file jobs are in the country east of there. South Bend is a Woke city like Portland, Oregon.
What a crock, smart streets, nothing downtown but a few restaurants, law firms and county/ city governments. County engineer said we need to slow traffic to keep people in city . ND wants to create their our “little city”. Roh’s vastly overrated, ate there more than once.
Didn't take me long to be reminded of why I left suck bend. The mindset of the people is to judge and scrutinize everything others say and do. The low vibration of the Catholic Way. They hate my weed but love that wine. Which one is killing you judgemental fools?
