I checked the Ocean Reef website. When you breathe in, air comes down the centre tube into the eye area where it helps to prevent fogging. It goes through a pair of non-return valves into the inner part that seals over your mouth and nose like a pilot's oxygen mask. When you exhale, the intake valves close and another pair open and let the air out of the mouth/nose area into the two exhaust tubes. Therefore, as Alec says, you are always breathing in fresh air and the only dead air space apart from your throat is the small pilot's mask bit. There are also anti-flood and clearance valves. So yes it looks like a good piece of kit that should actually let you breathe better than a conventional set-up.

It's a snorkel only mask but parents buy lots of these for kids without knowing how they work. Will be doing scuba FFM's in the future so keep watching buddy.

It looks like ( at 2:39 ) there is also a seal around the nose/mouth that has an exhale valve so I suspect when you inhale, the air comes down the center tube, around the frame of the mask to the nose/mouth section and it is 100% fresh air. When you exhale, that air goes into the "face" portion of the mask through those ports so you can actually (possibly) clear any water in the mask and then out the top two other tubes it goes. I can only assume the exhale tubes also have a 1 way valve so if you want to dip down to pick up those "three gold bars" the mask does not flood through the exhale circuit. Kind of sad really that it took this long for manufacturers to figure this out. Great to see this company had someone spend some brain juice and resolve the issue!

@Alec Peirce Scuba They really are great masks! I'm a factory trained service technician for Ocean Reef products (Full face scuba & snorkel masks and all associated communication systems) and use them extensively myself and with my family. The benefit of the Aria masks is they self clear with every exhalation due to the positioning of the purge valve. They're not designed to be duck dived in due to the squeeze that is experienced, however they do remain very well sealed when one does submerge the whole mask. Love the videos Alec, keep them coming!

Glad to hear from someone associated with the product. Have you read all the comments and my replies? Too many folks judge based on others experiences, not their own research and repeat the same mantras. I show items many divers might not know about, to think and try them. I tell my grandkids anything is dangerous if your an idiot with it plus scissors are dangerous but every house has 1 or more! Thanks for the comment sir.

I have gone through a fair few yes, very much the same sort of thing I see from a lot of divers often before they experience the products and specialty courses for themselves, really broadens the viewpoint once this barrier is crossed, as with many new products in our industry. You are very much correct that idiots will find a way to make quite literally anything dangerous. The Aria masks did have the unfortunate circumstance with the cheap copies tarnishing the reputation of the genuine & safe product, I do however enjoy talking to those that have heard "they're dangerous" and helping them to understand the differences between the genuine product and the copies. Would be awesome to see you do a tech tip on the Ocean Reef scuba IDM's though! They really broke the barrier between what was a highly technical, even commercial piece of equipment and what is now becoming more integrated into the recreational diving scene (esp cold water), so much so that I frequently sell and service full face masks for younger junior divers too! Thank you for the reply too! Phil

There are a lot of upgraded masks that have addressed the CD problems of the original full face masks, such as multiple tubes and valves to expel air near your mouth!

3 yrs agoo we were in a resort in the Philippines and 2 times i had to intervene whit ppl wering the the unsafe masks as they got so much in destresh they were drowning ,both were unexpierianced and i took a look at the masks and concluded i wood NEVER advise any one to use them as they are not safe ,both came in trubbel wen the mask had water intake and they just did not have the reflex to simply take of the mask and swim to safety ,one other point is that you can not empty the mask from water by the usual way like we do wen using regular dive mask .this and one can not dive down to the botom are the main reasons why i will never use them or advise others to use them.even whit the inproovements made i still considder them unsafe,greets Dirk,ps i love your vids and watched many many of them ,thank you soooo much for all the great info you share.i considder you as THE ambasador of scuba.

Thanks for sharing Dee. If this FFM, or any scuba related gear is used according to its manual, it should be safe. These new models have split air in/out and what most forget is its a snorkel, not a diving mask. Appreciate your confidence and I have lots more coming to get folks into a discussion.

Even with the safer models you should not use them for longer periods, they are not designed for it. Again, I would advise everyone who saw this to explore the issues and watch the other video. It is a bit dramatic but he has valid point some of which Alec also mentioned like the breathing tube design.

@@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter You should mention that they are designed for shorter durations not for snorkeling for hours like you might do in a good location. I usually go out for about an hour or so and these would not work for me.

Thank you Mr. Pierce while watching Sea Hunt I started seeing your videos and watch many of them.you have got me interested in getting my scuba diving licenses ,they start September 12th in my nearest town of fort Smith Arkansas they said $400 to $600 to be certified. Is that reasonable I have no idea. I have done snorkeling in Florida and I always wanted to learn to scuba dive. Thank you for being out there to help people new to the sport. I hope to meet you one day in Florida maybe at the Sea Hunt remembered festival. Thank you and have a great day.

What is import to you the student is what is included in the price to be 'certified'. Ask if these key items are included: lunch while in classroom, all pool gear, open water dives (4 over 2 days), rental gear for open water dives, certification picture and registration (to get your C-card). Then ask what is NOT included that you have to buy/supply: maybe personal mask/fins/snorkel, etc. Remember to tip your instructor after the last certification dive.

I have an IDM ( integrated diving mask) from Oceanreef. There are four main advantages with a full face mask. 1. Ur mask will very unlikely to fog up, because fresh air is constantly moving across the lens 2. You can see A LOT better with a FFM, because there is so much room between ur eyes and visor 3. Full face mask is actually safer because if somehow u pass out underwear, the mask will stay on ur face. 4. It looks awesome;)

@@pricediver My impression has always been it is harder to equalize with a full face because you can't reach your nose. I have trouble getting my left ear to equalize by just swallowing and often need that touch extra back pressure provide by pinching the nose.

@@MrShadowpanther3 FFM's for scuba diving generally have systems that allow you to use the Valsalva tecyhnique to equalise the rpessure in your ears. They either include some form of rubber "nose blocker" that presses against and seals your nostrils when you press the mask more firmly onto your face, or include soft pinch points or mechanical blockers. You don't really want to use a FFM for freediving, because the volume in the mask is significant (for the same reason you "spit out" a conventional snorkle mouth piece when you freedive)

As others have mentioned, most modern full-face masks are set up to allow equalizing by the pinched-nostril methods. Even hardhat rigs now have this feature. For example, the Kirby-Morgan Superlite-series has a bar with a knurled tip protruding through the front that can be pushed in to force soft-plastic plugs against the nostrils. In the case of full-face masks, a good example is my OTS Spectrum as seen in my avatar, which has the lens set into a frame on a silicone skirt, and the nose pocket in skirt can be squeezed to seal the nostrils just as with most modern half masks.

Hey Alec, love you guys and all you do, thanks for all the good info! I have a yellow dive light but I don’t like that it’s the same color as my safe second. Is there anything I can do to change the color ie spray paint or electrical tape or maybe some sort of neoprene sleeve. Want to make sure it won’t ruin the light or damage our beautiful underwater world. Thank you!

I looked on these type of full face masks to replace one scrapped mask on my restored Evinrude Aquanaut, the adaptation is fairly easy to perform but this type of mask lacks nostril pinching pockets so not usable for other use than surface snorkeling.

on buying new scuba tanks can the diver choose a valve when they buy them i seen a video from lake hickory on new tanks he had a a lot of different tank valves with them and he showed how he filled new tanks up with there plastic on them so they would not get scratched and or dinged and he showed a tank inspection he said defect could happen to new tanks from the manufacture and he said he has not seen one yet with a defect

on a other note,,i watched your and others videos on first stage regulators and tank valves and how din can be converted to yoke easely ,true but,,,not always ,wen the tank valve has M26 threads (like the tanks i have ) one can not find a yoke insert for it ,what is posibol is a adapter from M26 to 5/8 and then one can insert an adapter but one can not use a yoke reg becors it will not pas over the combination that is made .both 5/8 and M26 threaded valves are named din conection but he better watch out and inform you well before buying to get what you want or need he . in all the vids i watched about din valves and regulators never is mentioned that these two very different threads are used,i regret to say ,may be good for a future video he, greets Dirk

Good point Dee. That video was to show it is possible to switch between yoke and DIN. Most North America divers don't know that DIN has 2 models basically a regular DIN and high pressure DIN with more/deeper threads to hold the greater pressure. I will add that to my list of future ideas to clarify and educate divers. Thanks.

I was wondering about that - guessing the lower volume on the face part might be close to a regular snorkel which clearly re-breaths that much bad air back (like your throat does). Actually there is page on that now that I read it! neat. lower chamber is 200ml vs snorkel should not exceed 230ml of dead air space. Makes me think I should get a valved tube for snorkeling now...

Hi. A complete novice here in my 60s. I don't want to deep dive, just potter around on the surface. The reason I haven't snorkeled before is because I have false teeth and am terrified of losing them! A full face mask looks like it could be a solution? What are your thoughts?

You still have dead air space within the mask which is not a problem with a normal mask since you do no respirate through your eyes.

The residual air is minimal for normal breathers and not a safety risk with separate in/out air channels.

Love to know what mask you use. I have creases or smile lines that makes the masks I tried leaks. Is there a good mask for this problem or is thier a good technique to solve this problem???

Masks have to fit right and it does not matter who makes the most or most expensive, they must be tried on and tested using the 'sniff' test. Put the mask to your face, breath in through the nose a bit to pull it in, then gently pull on the mask to see of it pops off (tight seal) or falls off (no seal). Repeat until your find one that stays snug then look at other features like colour, look, etc. A mask is your #1 reason to dive so fit is first Roy.

@@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter Yep, I have two. One is close to the face and the other is more of the clear cage style. Both fit which is what matters. Everyone's head is slightly different is size and shape and the designs can only compensate within a range.

Don't know of any as underwater FFM's are intended for scuba or a hookah setup. Look for my video S08E03 Make Your Own Hookah Surface Supply. Give you some ideas for diving with no tanks.

That may be true for early models and some still sold today but they have improved to be as safe if the user follows the instructions. The first generation of dive computers were not perfect either yet today few dive without a computer. Snorkel FFM's have improved a lot and remember these are not scuba masks.

if you get the more expensive models and limit you use to calm water and for shorter periods and stay close together you can greatly reduce the risks but I would still not recommend them to any inexperienced snorkeler.

Sergio Llaguno yes !! There are two nose blocks to equalize. All u have to do is to push up the mask and those two nose blocks will block ur two nostrils

Many operators in Hawaii have banned these masks after five drownings.

Read that too. Don't know the models used but this has separate in/out chambers. Remember its for snorkelling not free diving.

The case reports I've seen indicate that the drownings involved cheap Chinese knock-offs of proper snorkel masks, and that they had poor designs that allowed carbon dioxide buildup that lead to hypoxia. Hypoxia can induce panic, and if a design is such that it can be difficult to remove quickly and easily that can lead to drowning. Of course dive operators and resorts can't be held responsible for inspecting every guest's mask, but maybe a list of "approved" models could be published.

It's OK John, we use all precautions before and after shooting as i'm old and do not want to be in a hospital. Watch my video on Teaching during COVID to see my precautions.
