This is how a review should be, backed up by plenty of images and several years of experience on the field. Way too many first impressions going around on the internet, while this is the right way.

Boy, was this timely for me. I've been shooting with Fuji for several years now, but have been toying with the idea of changing to full frame (better autofocus with Sony, mainly. I do a lot of street photography). There's so many more options now than there were when I switched from Canon aps-c to Fuji. But I made the switch mostly because weight was a factor for me and it still is. The Sony A7IV body may not be much heavier, but the lenses are. And when I look at your stunning images, I recognize that any deficiencies with my images are because of me, not the camera system I'm using.

These are not simple choices to make indeed. Street photography is of course much more dependent on great autofocus with moving subjects and the perfect scene only lasts a fraction of a second. I can also imagine that the potential for greater depth of field is a plus when moving to full frame in that situation. If you would stick with f/4 lenses on FF to get the same out of focus as on f/2.8 on APS-C the weight and size are also similar or smaller (12-24 f4 is 240g lighter and 24-70 f4 is 229 g lighter than their Fuji 2.8 equivalent lenses). But personally I would not move to FF when you already have all the lenses for Fuji (and you are happy with those of course) as there is quite a cost involved. Maybe the AF currently isn't perfect, but wait a few years and they will be on par with the A74 now.

Thanks for the comment, really glad you enjoyed the video. I know what you mean about needing razor fast AF, when I was shooting weddings it was absolutely vital and the Nikon D3 was amazing in that respect. With the Fuji I simply haven't shot in the same circumstances so I have no comparison to draw it against, but in little bits of testing I've done for some reviews I've noticed that it struggles with fast moving objects. "Struggles" might not be a correct word, it's just that in a burst of shots it will miss focus in a couple of them, but I'm comparing a mirrorless AF with my old dSLR AF, and they work in different ways. I honestly don't know if other mirrorless systems are better.
@adamwoodhouse936
@adamwoodhouse936 2 года назад
@@AndyMumford As with many styles of photography, wedding photography is executed very differently person to person. Having shot weddings for 13yrs and having had Nikon D3, etc and currently shooting only Fuji (have for 5yrs now) ... the XT2 and up system (for me) + battery grip have matched my Nikon D3 setup in performance (exceeded it in video) with the only exception, autofocus accuracy in really dark scenes (for me that is the middle of the dance floor when it's very dark). I have found my XT4 has done much much better in that one scenario where my XT2 suffers. I have not missed my heavy full frame gear one bit while doing many weddings the past 5 years.
@marcp.1752
@marcp.1752 2 года назад
Nobody would care about, with which gear a good picture was being taken, literally. It's all about your creative craft & vision, your own style. Gear is just a tool, to get the job done. But the camera industry lures you into FF only, because it's only "good enough", and not the smaller APS-C Sensor, which isn't true. Especially not with X-Trans. Analog to this, you'd never say to the cook of a fine restaurant - the meal was soo delicious, because he used pots for cooking from brand x...you get the point. :)

When I see the pictures you have shared, my question wouldn't be ''what camera and lens combo did he use!?'', it's actually ''how far has he hiked and how long has he waited for that image?'' and that speaks volume in my opinion.

After watching Andy’s previous videos about switching from DSLRs to Fuji X series, I sold my Nikon D850 and FF lenses and bought an XT3 and set of lenses. The D850 was an amazing camera, but I find the XT3 more intuitive to use and my kit is so much lighter. Basically everything Andy said was spot on, I’ve not looked back. Thank you for such excellent advice.

I remember watching a video of yours back in the autumn of 2017, at the time I had a full-frame Canon kit (5DSR) and it was the weight of my kit that made me rethink what kind of kit I actually needed. I got the X-T2 + 2 lenses, and the weight difference was so noticeable, I took it with me on a trip to Iceland and the images I got were wonderful including walking under a waterfall. I have back trouble so having a light kit that I can take hiking is great. What I really like about the Fuji system is that you get pro level features (weather sealing, dual UHS II card slots, 4K video) and regular firmware updates, the colour science and no anti-aliasing filter give you such rich sharp images. I love using vintage lenses on my X-T4, the whole user experience is just such a joy, every time I go for a walk with my camera I come back with a big smile on my face. On a lot of the photography channels here on RU-vid Fuji is either overlooked or disparaged as not being “Professional” which is in my opinion is snobbery. APS-C cameras & sensors have come a long way in the last 10 years, and I think the whole adage that full-frame is the best and everything else is rubbish just doesn’t hold water anymore. Fuji make the best APS-C mirrorless cameras out there with many features you won’t find on any other APS-C mirrorless cameras, the reason for this I think is that they don’t make full-frame cameras, so they are not trying to push people to buy them with the better features that are missing from the APS-C line up because they have them in their APS-C cameras already (unlike Nikon & Sony - 1 card slot & no weather sealing). I think a lot of the channels on RU-vid are quite irresponsible in pushing the most highly spec’d and expensive camera kit when most people who watch photography videos on RU-vid don’t need the most expensive spec’d out kit. When I consider new kit, I always ask myself what I will be using it for and is there a cheaper alternative that will meet those needs. Don’t fall for all the “hype” on RU-vid and buy what best meets your needs rather than what you think other people think you should buy.
@AndyMumford
@AndyMumford 2 года назад
Thanks for the comment, really glad you enjoyed the video. I do think that to a certain extent specs are an easy thing for reviews to latch onto as they're quantifiable and easily comparable.

I prefer a APS-C Topmodel, vs. a cheapskate entry Level FF Setup. A camera is so much more, than just Sensor size. And no offense - think about a EOS RP, which is clearly inferior. Mediocre WR, if any, no IBIS, cheap 2.36 MP EVF, one SD Card Slot, otherwise in all things the Z5 Nikon is much better, and price difference is a cheap 100 bucks new, at least in germany. Anyway, i am a control freak, and i do like as much direct access dials & buttons, i could have...instead of playing menu dive anytime, for feature xy, which eats up my nerves. If i'd being one of the Fujifilm bosses, i'd order them to produce a niche inside a niche camera - a Fujifilm X-Pro and X-E Series without LCD on the backside, and also with a monochrom Sensor only. Just like Leica with their M-D, M10-D, or M60. But APS-C, and being buyable for us, ordinary people. I prefer simplicity. For the same reasons, i would someday upgrade to the X100V, but boy...the original X100 still does render such creamy tones, and i love it. I can smile about all these more MP, faster AF, and always owning the latest & greatest GearHeads and Techfreaks..it's all about G.A.S. only - gear aquisation syndrome. If someone can't create a decent picture with say a D40, it doesn't work with any gear. Into the end of the day - better gear can enhance your image quality, but doesn't turn you into a better photographer. That comes over the years, decades and with experience...and is not correlating to any specific gear. Andy here, creates some extraordinary fine landscape pictures, i do really love to look at.

I remember being rubbished on line when I said my X-Pro1 was on par with FF DSLR’s IQ. Then the X-T1 came along and respected FF Canon shooters started ditching their 5D3’s for them. A mass exodus followed when the X-T2 was released with its superior AF performance, Fuji now need to re-ignite the faithful with their next generation cameras................
@acmdv
@acmdv 2 года назад
@@cerealkiller4248 I think the new X-H2 will be massive. Then hopefully the X-T5 & X-Pro4 will have that new higher megapixel sensor in them.

We’re surrounded by advertising exhorting us not to accept compromise, but the reality is that life is all about trade offs. Provided the camera system I can reasonably afford is capable of taking (way) better shots than I am, I’m happy with that system (but less happy with my own limitations). Loving the landscape shots, keep up the great work, a real wellbeing window on the world during the COVID restrictions 😊

After hiking up to Bridal Veil Falls (3000ft hike) in Washington state with a Canon 5D iii and multiple heavy Zeiss lenses I realised if I was going to do more landscape I would need a lighter system and simplify. Roll on pandemic and I got separated from my USA home (long story!) and stuck in UK, so had to get a new camera and could start my decision from scratch. I started by looking at a small compact and ended up discovering the Fuji X100V. I got that for street photography and instantly fell in love with the system and the ability to generate JPEG and spend less time on the edit. I then realised that the XT-4 would suit my landscape needs much better given how light the system is. And I'm astonished at how sharp the lenses are. I'm sure they are a factor better than my Canon L glass, I can't quite put my finger on it. I've been using the 16-80mm lens and it's really great. I also have the 35mm f/2 which is great too. What I really love is the dials on top of the XT4. It's great for teaching exposure too because you can just focus on the 3 settings and the histogram. I honestly enjoy using them, and I can't explain why. Try it, you will like it :-)

Your initial video made me decide on the X-T2 as my first camera. Now, three years later I shoot photos and videos for my day job and have the occasional freelance job on the side. My photos have been published in a new Wanderlust book and hang printed large on the wall of several family members and friends. I still use the X-T2 side by side with the X-H1 and I enjoy every minute of it. The Fuji X system definitely has it's quirks but overall it offers great value. So thank you for your recommendation Andy, it literally helped change my life and career.

Wow, that's a lovely comment Kees, thank you for that. I'm really glad that you've been able to make a living out of photography, and it's nice to have been a tiny part in that with the recommendation of the XT2 (which is an absolutely wonderful camera)

This is such a great video. Understanding that photography is about the experience and not idealism is transformational to many I believe, and the Fuji system does an amazing job in light of this. I'll be continuing to shoot Fujifilm for my landscape work for a long time.

I take great pleasure in shooting with my XT3, it's intuitive for me, and, as you said, it depends greatly on how the camera is an extension to your own imagination. I have just taken some pictures of the dawn in the mountains and I am loving how the light, the colours and the feelings in the pictures match the experience I had (and the cold and the waking up way too early...). I used for some time my father's Canon EOS and it felt as if the camera was working against me at every shot. I am happy you've found a system you are comfortable with (because it makes you make videos about photography with a system I simply love). Bon Ano novo.

Love this discussion. Appreciate your prioritization of camera use experience and ability to capture the mood and lighting of a scene vs getting overly caught up in sensor and image size or technical camera specs. Just purchased an X-T4. Hasn't even arrived yet. Looking forward to getting it outdoors for Alaska landscapes and wildlife. Thanks for the inspiration.

Great video Andy. For several years now, I've been pondering adding a Fuji camera to my gear. I really love the tactility of the cameras, especially because I am often out in cold weather. I guess I've never gone down the rabbit hole because of the limited offering in fast lenses. Living in Iceland, shooting aurora is important to me.
@AndyMumford
@AndyMumford 2 года назад
Thanks so much Jeroen, glad you enjoyed it. I know what you mean, the best aurora lens on Fuji is the 8-16mm f2.8, which is undeniably brilliant, but it's very big, very heavy and very expensive. There are rumours that Tamron will launch the 11-20mm f2.8, and that's a pretty small lens, but I have no idea if it's anything other than an optimistic rumour, and if it is true, how good the lens will be

Excellent video Andy. A few years ago I got and XT2, 10-24 & 55-200, mimicking your kit. I figured that if they were good enough for you, then there was no need to look further. No regrets, I love this system and am delighted with the quality of my landscape photos. Occasionally when I get GAS, I re-watch your older XT2 videos and that cures the problem. Thank you for the inspiration.

Hi Andy, I came across this video as I'm about to get a Fujifilm XT4, and let me tell you, this was really insightful! I really loved the way you explain everything as I've noticed most people on RU-vid tend to throw trash at stuff that are not necessarily bad (people complaining about the autofocus not being fast enough, or the battery life when, by logic, this is not a camera with the required specs for being a filmmaker, among other things). Anyway, thank you for sharing your long-term experience with Fujifilm, it did make me make up my mind about it! Greetings from Colombia!

Thanks for the comment Nani, glad you found the video useful. The reality of photography and videography is that we have so many fantastic tools available to us with capabilities that for the most part exceed the needs or skill level of the people who use them. Whatever camera you use is going to be excellent and do an incredible job. But the internet tends to want to magnify all differences and be binary about things, so one subtle difference between one camera and another, that probably has very little real world effect, is magnified into being a reason why you need one camera over another. It's rubbish, cameras are creative tools and for the most part don't limit our creativity in any way.

Great video as always. I also started with an X-T10, then X-T1, X-T20, X-T2, and now use an X-T3 & X-H1. When out hiking and doing landscape photography the X-T3, 10-24 & 55-200 are all I take. Along with a few spare batteries, Kase filters, Benro Carbon slimline tripod. My whole kit is so light and versatile. Makes it a joy to go out with my camera and just be outside. That to me is the biggest benefit of the Fujifilm system.

Great video and insight into the Fuji System. I have been shooting Fuji since the XT1 came out and I really enjoy it. Occasionally I think about switching to a full frame system, but ultimately stick with my current XT4 and Fuji lenses as it has never been the gear that is holding me back! I also like your comment on Capture 1 vs. LR. I have been back and forth the past year and was leaning towards capture 1 until the LR update late 2021. The change to masking sold me and I am back on LR 100%.

Great video. The only addition from me (as a person who moved from Olympus OM-D to Fuji) is the Fujii's commitment to updates - they have a fantastic history of bringing new firmware updates to older hardware. This is a sign of a company that loves photgraphy, and understands that the value of a photography community.

Thanks for for comment. I forgot to mention that about the firmware updates, but it’s true, Fuji don’t really seem concerned about pushing newer cameras at the expense of their old ones.
