Oh - nice to see it again. I was the music artist for this game about 25 years ago. I originally composed the music for the Amiga CD32-version and later "translated" it for the Genesis. Sweet memories ;)
definitely my favorite genesis soundtrack :) a real breath of fresh air from most genesis games! gives off some romantic vibes at times, at least to me.
Never heard of this game before, and I just gotta say, I don't seem to be alone in marveling at the lush backgrounds, the rich textures, and the detailed sprites in this game. Amazing stuff.
You've probably heard this by now, but a man named Henk Nieborg is responsible for this gorgeous pixel art. And the good news is that he's still pushing his beautiful pixel art to this day. But yeah, it was this game Flink that initially drew me to his work.
This takes me back to being a 6 year old back in NZ and trying to start the game.early in the morning as I would lose all the data when I turned it off. I remember being so frustrated by not being able to figure out how to get into the tree or the volcano. I feel like I've travelled back in time watching this and finally seeing the levels I missed out on! Thank you for this!
I remeber Getting this game when i was a little boy and being stunned with the graphic. and the music was so strange and compleling, still have it at my grandmother. i wonder if it would be worth anything, it seams rare =)
Really? The sprite work is nicely detailed but nothing about the game looks particularly demanding for the system. Games like Ranger X, Batman and Robin, Toy Story, Vectorman... those push the system and look better than most SNES games.
@@thewholeinternet1715 Look at the cloud in the intro and smooth ass sprite scaling in second water level. That's some of the best scaling I've seen on the system. Many more examples of them doing very impressive special effects in software, using the Genesis' highly flexible config. The overall quality of animation and color selection is very good too. Definitely one of the better looking Western-developed games.
The Genesis was a very brisk and flexible system. While it lacked many of the fancy video hardware features of the SNES, it's CPU/VDP config and fast memory bus allowed decent devs to implement amazing stuff in software. Flink is definitely one of the most impressive Western-developed games, with crazy sprite scaling and rotation, and other excellent especial effects. Toy Story and Mickey Mania are some of the other most technically impressive Genesis games, both of which have extra 3D stages and better special effect than the SNES version, because without special chips inside carts, the SNES wasn't nearly as flexible.
blast processing FROM THE VDP DMA is doing this .is getting more colors on screen ..almost like a 32 bit game .. a console from 1988..AMAZING...the cpu on the genesis is more powerful than the snes..
The Misadventures of Flink is a game that's from 1994... it's not from 1988 but the graphics are very impressive for being a Sega Mega Drive game... I give you that. Oh, you meant that the game system is from 1988.
You can to a ton with 64 colors. Even 10 colors is more than enough to fully flesh out a good looking fighting game sprite and by using versatile colors that you can use for different objects, you can get loads of detail and color depth out of 64 colors. The size of the Genesis' pallete was actually a far greater limitation than it's on screen color count. While it does bright cartoony colors well, it struggles to produce anything dark without it being a mess of dithered purple, green and blue, due to it's lack of darker shades of gray.
I remember buying this game from London/lakeside after seeing it on a sega magazine. Graphics were great for its time. I still play this game a few times a year thx to the emulators. The great pixel artist Henk Nieborg is the name you all should know if you like this game.
Some impressive Amiga-like visuals going on here. That's probably why no one took notice of it, because it didn't look as aesthetically appealing as the average console game with a more cartoony look and bright and bold colours and stuff. Also, what the hell with ending!
How did they do the mode7 rotation and zooming effects without the SNES graphics power? I mean you can do that with software of course, but is the CPU of the Megadrive fast enough for that? If so, why were older Megadrive games not capable of rotation/zooming?
what the hell? this game's graphics art are jaw dropping! not only that this game has smooth rotation and scaling, which is something only the SNES could do! they must've put special chip inside the cartridge
No special chip. Just great programming. When i think of the best looking Mega Drive games i think of Vectorman 2, Alien Soldier, the unbelievably awesome bonus stages (like T-Rex Escape and Raptor Chase) in The Lost World: Jurassic Park and this beautiful game. I love Flink.
@@rootykazooty351 Also check out Red Zone. Polygonal graphics, scaling, rotation - everything without any additional special chips or "modes". Genesis / Mega Drive's CPU was quite fast (certainly much faster than the SNES one) and a great programmer could do a lot of good things with it, if he knew the architecture well enough.
I like the composition of the music, but the “instruments” really hurt my ears lol. The rest of the game looks amazing, but the sound chip can definitely do better
This is one of my favorite back in the days (90's kid) but unfortunately didn't finished this game because at cloud stage 50:37 it always turns to black out and it hang so u need to start all over again since it has no memory card for it to save..
This dude looks cute and innocent, but he is over here casting spells, summoning demons and killing innocent people, stealing their valuables and then their souls!!! Wtf???
Yes, this game is incredibly beautiful, but just like The Adventures of Batman & Robin it suffers from recycling of it's own assets - you basically playing 3 to 4 time on almost exactly same levels with different color palette and even in completely unique locations there is still a tons of identical looking sprites and backgrounds elements reused extensively. It just unfortunate that with such an unbelievable quality of spritework itself devs have decided(?) to reuse so many of those tilesets... Funny enough, the CD version suffers from exact same visual repetitiveness - guess the development budget was very restricted, or else I simply don't understand why did't they just used 4MB cart for Genesis version and draw a tons of unique assets for it. Credits says that all art was done by just one guy, but come on, with enough money YOU CAN hire a couple of competent artists to help the main one because any professional knows how to imitate someones else artstyle so the fact that one awesome dude drawn it all is kinda both impressive and sad, really. So yeah, I do believe it was budget issues, it's just makes sense. Where are all those rich publishers when we need them, lol?
Who da fu approved the design of the main character???? even as a small kid I didn't want to play as something like this. Why not give him diapers to make it complete?
