Hike Description:
Two gushing waterfalls, a series of perilous cables, and (about) half of a massive granite dome: welcome to the most iconic hike in Yosemite Valley.
Tourists, campers, hikers, climbers, nature lovers, the young and old, the first-timers, the experienced, at some point they all converge. Where? In California's Yosemite National Park that question is superfluous, for there are plenty of winding paths, Ansel Adams-pictured scenes, water features, historic sites, and high summits to choose from. But mention "Half Dome" and a thought may arise in the most uninitiated of minds because, well, everyone comes here. Some come to enjoy the camping in Little Yosemite Valley; a great number to marvel at Vernal and Nevada Falls; others to hike the 7- to 8-mile (one way) trip and grab as securely as they can onto those perilous cables. A fear-immune brave souls climb straight up to the top.
Whatever can be done to intertwine with this majestic granite formation, one must commit to it. Hike this at least once, because while up there the High Sierra can expand the sight in all directions-it is well worth the effort, even if the hike is as long and difficult as everyone has warned. Yes, the cables get notoriously steep immediately after the initial steps. And, yes, going back down will be a stress-inducing experience as well. But the most difficult part of all? Getting a permit to climb (those cables) onto Half Dome in the first place.
Self Commentary:
For various reasons it took me a few times to get this video, but the cables were fun every time. Be careful and take time as needed while climbing but do let faster hikers pass, whether going up or down. The waterfalls on this hike are destinations of their own; there will be a lot of people on the Mist Trail up to the top of Nevada Fall, but after that the crowds generally thin out. Going up, the last toilets on the trails are at the top of Nevada Fall; however, farther ahead more can be found via the off-trail campground detour in Little Yosemite Valley. There are many spots to explore on this hike and along the Merced River that I am not showing in the video. The river/waterfalls typically achieve peak flow during spring and early summer (depending on the previous winter season), and become less voluminous later in the year-you may spot the difference with Vernal Fall between my photos, which were taken in June, and video recorded in October.
This hike was on my list for a long time and I was ecstatic to finally complete it. The first time setting foot on Half Dome I definitely felt the effects of the High Sierra: lighter, accomplished, and more reflective of myself and my happenings. It might be something else for you; during one of the times I was up there I overheard someone proclaimed she felt "lucky." That is a great word.
There will be many people climbing the cables, but it is possible to beat the crowds by breaking the hike into a 2-day backpacking trip and camping overnight at the Little Yosemite Valley Campground (wilderness permit required). This method will not necessarily make things easier since heavy camping gear is carried the whole time (unless, of course, you are an ultralighter).

Thank you for the video. You are unbelievably fit. Reminded me of my hike with couple of friends up to the top in 1992 that took us 10 hrs.+. No web info, no permits needed those days. I was young, naive with no pre-conditioning, ran out water (drank direct from the stream), no gloves, no camera (got 1 photo with friend's polaroid camera after reaching the sub-dome on the return) and in sneakers (ended up with blisters). Was lucky and happy to have done it then. Your video makes me want to do it again but with more prep of course. Also, saw a couple with a baby climbing up and no climbing safety harness - can't imagine that baby being 31 years+ of age. Except for a bit of paved trail at the bottom, rest of the trail looks almost the same. Beauty of NPs.

Hello, L Hull. I'm glad I didn't get hurt as well. It's all perspective: fast to you is normal to me, and slow to hikes who can easily pass me (unlike Bigfoot, they do exist; I've seen them). Same with the woman and her child: it seems strange because you don't see it a lot, but I can offer some insight. I talked to the mother; she showed confident. The baby was securely attached to her and she was hooked to (one of) the cables. She took it slow and they both made it up/down safely. Additionally, I've seen many other hikers with babies. So I believe it's possible. Cheers.

The Outbound Mind thanks for letting me know she made it safely with the baby. The view from up there is gorgeous. This is the only way I’d ever be able to see it so thank you for making the video. I think I’ve watched every one you have on RU-vid thanks to insomnia 😂As to people taking babies on this particular hike, they may have items to tether themselves to the cables going up and down half dome, however, the trails they have to climb to get there seems risky carrying a baby. I’m sure many people hike with babies but I doubt very much that the numbers are great on that particular hike. Safe travels.👍 Is there a reason you don’t share your name? Just curious who I’m hiking with😂

@L Hull For privacy and other reasons, I don't share personal information online. I have met hikers and people in real life who know who I am. These videos are about the hiking and I willingly answer related questions. If you have questions on other topics that you think could be relevant/important, maybe send an email (the address can be found in the channel's About section). Yesterday I watched part 1, today I watched part 2. I can't think of a more pleasant way to spend pandemic lock down time. As of this week I guess Yosemite is considering implementing a lottery to even be able to drive into the park and requiring some type of lodging reservation to get in as well. But I sure did enjoy this virtual hike, experiencing every step of the way. My plan for a second Half Dome hike is to start at Glacier Point then hike down to Little Yosemite Valley to spend the night, do Half Dome the next day, spend a second night at LYV, then return to Happy Isles. I just want to take my time and soak in the sights, sounds and scents. Thanks for a great video.

@swithinbarclay4797
@swithinbarclay4797 4 года назад
@@rkatrails : Respectfully disagreeing with you . . . in spite of a "harness", with carabiner clips and webbing, there is still the chance that this mother could stumble. If that papoose pack does not have an absolute IRON GRIP on the infant, then the infant gets pitched out, into the merciless infinity; the infant dies. Then this mom could very well be facing charges of negligent homicide, if not, negligent manslaughter. Or, if the papoose pack keeps the infant, "secure", the infant stands a likelihood of some kind of SERIOUS injury, should the papoose strike HD's surface. At the very least, she's caused a bit of a traffic jam; someone could still jostle her, breaking her concentration, with somewhat the same results. Even if infants are defenceless, perhaps this one knew something (besides the Dome) untowards was up, and that's why she/he was complaining. To SAFELY summit Half Dome, via the Cables, it should be done under one's OWN POWER, on foot, and their armpits have to be tall enough to clear the tops of the Stanchions; I'd say that describes a tall Seven-Year old? NAY!! If I were the Permits Ranger, perched a third of the way up Sub-Dome, I would have done everything . . . in my POWER . . . to DENY her entry to the Dome. Take it up with the Park Magistrate, and YNP's Chief Legal Officer. I compare this, to that little girl "aviator", that fatally crashed her plane in a thunderstorm, a few years back. Duboff, I believe her name was? She was too young to be doing this; you need an adult's sensibilities and judgment.

This hike is not about age, just about being a fit human being and that happens till your early 80s if you take care (I guess once you hit late 80s/90+ it may change, since the body deteriorates pretty steep from there).

I started around 7:53 AM. There were several reasons I faced forward: 1. The way the cables were set up, it wasn't necessary to descend facing the wall (i.e., not rappelling with one line). 2. To savor the perspective, which is similar to riding a rollercoaster in the front seat. 3. I didn't fear heights. 4. I had adequate arm strength. Enjoy if you're going to attempt.

It's actually all OKAY, "Victoria" . . . REALLY . . . "Outbound's" camera was swinging around quite a lot, on his chest--I guess!! And his camera seems to get this curious "fish-eye" effect, which distorts the gradients. I found it kinda neat. And I speak from experience, too, in telling you that Subdome's far more gentle than Main Dome. If you want to hike these; and you're decently conditioned; and, you can keep a good grip on yourself, psychologically, don't worry, JUST GO FOR IT!!

THANK YOU for these videos!! I am hoping to do this hike this summer on a two day pass. So, am I right by saying that you took the John Muir Trial after Vernal going up- avoiding Nevada Falls. And on the way down, you clearly did not take the John Muir? If I am accurate, where did you get on the JMT and how much extra time does that add? I was looking at the hike on AllTrails app- its mentioned that taking the trail at Clark Point (between Vernal and Nevada) adds too much time on to the hike? The trail down Nevada looks more intimidating then Half Dome itself
@TheOutboundMind
@TheOutboundMind 3 года назад
Hello, Pamela. You may be describing the winter option, when diverting to JMT is necessary BEFORE Nevada Fall. However, in the video (summer), I stick with the Mist Trail only and encounter both Vernal/Nevada. JMT is not taken until AFTER Nevada, but that's because it becomes the de facto trail in Little Yosemite Valley. The colored Yosemite Valley map on the NPS website will help. When you hike (in the summer), simply go left everytime you encounter a junction. That'll take you to Half Dome. To return, do the reverse and keep right each time. No extra mileage/time added. The cables are absolutely the most intimidating and difficult part of the hike. But the lottery might beat them. Best of luck.
