Hey everyone, I hope you're all doing well and enjoying your learning while preparing for exams. Are you watching all the videos on past papers and practice papers we've done? We have papers from May/June 2023 to October/November 2023, and even February/March papers are uploaded, so please go through them. Today, we're going to attempt a new paper: Paper 1 Computer Science (0478/12) from May/June 2023. The paper is 1 hour 45 minutes long, and you need to answer all the questions on the question paper. No additional materials are needed, and you should use a blue or black pen, with a pencil for diagrams. Write your name, candidate number, and center number in the boxes at the top of the page. Do not use erasable pens or correction fluid, and avoid writing on any barcodes. Calculators are not allowed. The paper is worth 75 marks, with marks for each part given in brackets. Refrain from using brand names for software or hardware.
Let's start with question 1: "Output devices are used to output data from a computer." Circle three devices that are output devices from the list provided. I've circled actuator, printer, and speaker. For revision, we know DVD is a storage device, remote and keyboard are input devices, microphone and mouse are input devices, scanner is an input device, sensor is an input device, and SSD is a storage device. Other storage devices include HDD, CDs, Blu-ray disc, flash memory, RAM, and ROM.
Question 2: Convert the given binary numbers to hexadecimal. For 110101, group the digits from right to left: 110 and 101. This gives us 3 and 9, so the answer is 93. For 11101 and 0000, it translates to D and 0, so the answer is D0. Logical shifts to the right divide the number by 2 for each position shifted.
Why use hexadecimal to represent binary numbers? It's easier and quicker to read, write, and debug, with less likelihood of errors. It also provides a shorter representation, taking up less space on the screen.
Question 3: When keys are pressed on a keyboard, text is converted to binary using a character set like ASCII or Unicode. ASCII characters are stored in 7 bits, extended ASCII in 8 bits, and Unicode in up to 4 bytes.
Text files can be compressed using lossless compression, which reduces file size by eliminating or replacing adjacent identical data with the number of occurrences and their positions. This compression helps save storage space and makes files quicker to transmit over the internet.
Question 4: Describe serial data transmission: data is sent one bit at a time over a single wire. Benefits of serial transmission include simplicity and reduced likelihood of data corruption compared to parallel transmission.
