Although Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) consists of thousands of techniques, studies of the real fights conducted by members of the Gracie Family show that 36 techniques have been used more often, and with greater success, than all the other techniques combined. Originally developed for the U.S. Army, Gracie Combatives is the only jiu-jitsu program that is entirely dedicated to the mastery of these 36 essential techniques.
The 13-Year Update
Gracie Combatives is the best-selling beginner jiu-jitsu program ever released by the Gracie Family. Thirteen years after it was first released on video, the program has been completely re-produced from top to bottom. While the core 36 techniques are the same, everything else about this collection has been improved. Here's what's new:
Bonus Slices: Every lesson features a totally new bonus technique (or slice) designed to improve your effectiveness against an opponent who may have some jiu-jitsu or grappling experience.
The 32 Principles: When you understand how a technique works, you have a solution for one problem. When you understand why a technique works, you have a solution for every problem. For the first time ever, we identify the core 2-3 principles for every single Gracie Combatives lesson. Our hope is that by unlocking the power of the 32 Principles this early in your jiu-jitsu journey, you will reach the mountaintop of jiu-jitsu mastery in half the time it would otherwise take.
Street Tips: The lessons cover the most commonly neglected aspects surrounding the use of BJJ in real life altercations including, but not limited to multiple attackers, biting, eye gouging, groin strikes, legal considerations, terrain considerations, weapons considerations, and so much more!
3-D Motion Graphics: Sometimes the best way to communicate a particular detail or movement, was to add 3-D motion graphics to the lesson, so we went for it!
Solo Preparation Drills: No training partner, no problem. Every lesson features a thorough demonstration of the solo preparation drills you can use to build muscle memory without a partner or to warm-up your body for the technique of the day.
Technique Slices: We mastered the art of making complex skills easy to understand. By breaking down each lesson into simplified drills or “slices,” we eliminate all the confusion so that anyone can learn jiu-jitsu.
Reflex Development Drills: At the end of each lesson, we teach you how to combine all the techniques covered in the lesson to increase your confidence and build your muscle memory in their execution.
Fight Simulation Drills: To make sure you understand how the technique of the day integrates seamlessly with all previously learned techniques, we provide a carefully scripted Fight Simulation Drill for you to practice until it feels natural.
Mindset Minutes: Before moving on to the next lesson, we provide a short recap of the essential concepts covered in the lesson to make sure you retain what matters most.
Why So Many People Quit Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
Even though BJJ is widely accepted as one of the most effective martial arts on the planet, it's also known to be one of the most confusing and discouraging, especially when taught without a plan. At most BJJ schools, beginners are taught without a formal curriculum, without any emphasis on street self-defense, and they are encouraged to spar without first learning how to do so safely. More often than not, the beginner will sustain an injury early on that will make them question the path they've chosen, and then they quit.
Having grown tired of seeing people quit BJJ, we decided to create the perfect beginner curriculum, and Gracie Combatives was the result. Here are the top three reasons why Gracie Combatives is trusted by so many students around the world:
Linear Learning: Unlike other BJJ instructional videos which present techniques in random order, every Gracie Combatives lesson is taught in linear fashion so that every technique builds on the skills acquired in previous lessons.
Self-Defense Emphasis: Sport BJJ can be very fun for advanced practitioners, but the sheer number of techniques can be overwhelming for beginners. By focusing 100% of the training time on the highest probability street self-defense situations, Gracie Combatives allows beginners to build confidence in their foundation while simultaneously learning skills that could actually save their lives.
Safety First: Since there is no sparring in Gracie Combatives, injuries are extremely rare. This program gives beginner students the opportunity to work with a cooperative partner while learning the core techniques, safety protocols, and training etiquette that will ensure they are ready to begin sparring (safely) when they transition into the Master Cycle.

I really appreciate the 2.0 series! I'm living in Japan for work and recently got into bjj. I'm the only foreigner and with my limited Japanese, sometimes I have to watch everyone else perform the exercise before I begin, it can be frustrating for my partner but the Japanese are very patient with me. These series helps me delve into the beginner techniques ahead of time so that I'm prepared! Thank you very much!

Over the years I have trained with 5 members of the Gracie’s family. I have trained with many other jiu-jitsu instructors. I went through GST certification and loved it. My son and I had a chance to seminar with Rener. Amazing instruction- the best I have learned Gracie Jiu-Jitsu or anything I have ever trained or studied. 💯

I started the Gracie Combatives with my son last fall and completed all classes including RD at our local CTC. In 2 weeks I will start the testing for the GC belt! I’m nervous but excited. I’m 46 and this program has opened the world of BJJ for me and my son. Looking forward to continue the journey! Wife wants to start the Women’s Empowered program too. Thank you guys and the Gracie family! ❤🤙🏽 🥋

I'm writing this comment because information was a bit sparse when I wanted to understand more about the Combatives program. TL DR: If you want to do BJJ and you're not an athletic stud, this is the club for you I'm 36 y/o who went to a sport BJJ club first. I have a toddler, a job and I had additional exercise that I was also doing. After 3 'fundamentals' sessions at the sport BJJ club and not being able to move my body afterwards, the risk was too great to my day to day function so I quit and transitioned over to a Gracie University Certified Training Centre (GU CTC). I refer to the style taught at the GU CTC as Gracie Jui Jitsu (GJJ) I now go 3 times a week and am just working on qualifying for the Reflex Development classes currently. The difference is night and day between the sport school and the GU CTC. Learning ONLY technical instruction was hard at the start, but after a little while it all makes sense. When you are a white belt in a sport BJJ club, you replace technical BJJ skill for aggression, and when rolling with these aggressive people, that is the greatest risk of injury. This is known as the 'spazzing' phase, and the GU CTC curriculum effectively nullifies this stage. It does this by giving only technical instruction for around 3-4 months, then introduces a new class that just works on chaining the moves together and starting to read your opponents movements. You will complete both technical instruction and the light sparring sessions for a remaining 4 months at minimum. By doing this, the practitioner increases their technical understanding and also making them comfortable in the BJJ setting. Once you are ready to move into the regular BJJ class (Master Cycle), you will need to prove you understand the techniques and how to read the opponents movements. By having this test, the GU CTC can effectively reduce the people who replace technical BJJ skill for aggression who would go into the master cycle class. I have the following tips if you're interested in making the switch to Combatives; * A perfect example of GJJ in a professional competition is Andre Galvao v Ryron Gracie at Metamoris (youtube search it) * When you get the Combatives card, you will see the curriculum. To get the most out of your training, its best to review AT LEAST the bolded portion of the lesson before attending (this will be the bulk of the class) * You will do the standup techniques lots of times, so learn to break fall, and dont worry too much about reviewing unless you have no idea * If you struggle with the idea of not rolling, you can attend other clubs open mats, BUT be aware, they will not hold back and will go extra hard because you are an outsider (I have experience) * The price for a GU CTC could be on the higher side (depends on your local clubs), but you have to remember that GU CTC classes are actually both a class and a full game instructional. So if you were planning to go to a Sport Club and then also buy submeta.io or some BJJ fanatics products, this is good to factor in. * Only getting to wear the white Gi can be restrictive. You can still have a swaggy gi as long as your instructor is cool with it. Just make sure its white. * A combatives belt is generally regarded as a two-stripe white belt at other clubs, obviously it is a club belt only, and is not for other clubs. * Once you get to the Masters Cycle, people do compete in local and state comps if that's what you want to do, although it's just not the focus of the club. See you on the mats

Are all the students in the combative class white belts? Is the masters class much more advanced?
@Koncs86
@Koncs86 19 дней назад
@@staffysmile3325 Yes, Combatives is the white belt program. When you complete the program, I believe you get a white belt with a blue stripe through the middle (not straight to blue belt anymore, which was pretty controversial for a while because there is no free sparring in the beginner program, only situational sparring-like drills called fight simulation). Master Cycle is for everyone who has successfully completed Combatives, white/blue through black belts, where you start free sparring and learning more advanced techniques.

Started at 53. Gracie certified training centers are the way to go, learn basic 32 techniques. Before ever getting into sparring / more high risk situations. You can still get hurt, but much safer program than many schools. Currently not training due to injury not caused by training but work… go get a free ten day. Its worth it and not as hard as you might think.

Dan Please! I've already told my martial arts students you're a tough guy and I will tell them again. The material is completely different from your instructional, its actually very much like you're teaching different people for different purposes. Yours is meant to be a few absorbable seminars with skills that you can work for a long time, this is meant to be a curriculum that students will follow for the foreseeable future. Their original program was over 15 hours of video and I think this current program has over 30 hours of video. Your course would be missing the point if you dragged it on for 30 hours and this course is meant to work through the first section of the textbook of Jiu Jitsu and has a bunch of other stuff to do in replacement of rolling because they aren't there to supervise everyone and aren't selecting only for the people with the strength and sense to naturally roll. Your course is a best seller and you were reasonable when you priced it and made it affordable. You did good work, this is a different type of product and there are hundreds of schools (at least dozens already) that will be aligning their curriculum to match this new program.
@haadnaqvi1323
@haadnaqvi1323 21 день назад
Not to say someone couldn't practice your material in that one dvd for a long time and keep getting benefits for a long time. Saying a few seminars is underselling the material, the point more was "reasonable time", you made the material in a way it could be worked over a shorter time, this is different than that.
