@@pnwdweler4100 Yeah, insane that he's about 100-120 lbs lighter than Brian, Hafthor and Eddie were at their best. Imagine if he puts on just 30 more lbs and for the sake of argument, 20 lbs of muscle and 10 of fat. 20 freaking lbs of muscle.
26:39 lol Tom and Jerry both making the exact same expression after that judge call. Also, Tom and Jerry! Didn't even notice that till I started typing.
What made Hooper the best here was he had a plan..look at him looking at the clock..you could see that was trained and strategy..he knew exactely when to do the lift..the rest time..how many he wanted to do..that was 100 percent executed strategy..and that makes the difference
Singleton really could do with calming down.. its a shame as id normally say being on fire is good but he just gets all over the place.. it works on some events but when ur dealing with an awkward implement u have to be level headed.
@@crazy10bears yeah IV seen him get seriously off with that one too, he still hasn't quite figured out that being a next level strongman is often about having a calm mentality, knowing when to use that aggression of course, I think the whole 'wrestle mania' style he goes for lets him down. (I know it has to do with his past, and a lot of people think it's fun, but you have to decide if u want to be a 'show' or a great strongman) it's why hooper is so good, his mental stability is incredible.
Binge watching the events, and I had the same thought. It is one thing to get jacked up, but not to a level that effects your performance. His coach needs to rein him in and put the energy to where it will make a difference, not a detriment.
@@joeshmoe7967 yes exactly, I don't have anything against the guy, I just think he needs to step away from the 'wwe style' thing he's got going on.. yeah I get it it's his thing but when it makes u worse at what your trying to do surely u have to address it.
More Strongmen need to work on their technique. Hooper showed what that and strength can do. With Tom's brute strict power, if he starts adopting a good split jerk, he wins this no problem. I think Mitch's biggest strength is performing when it matters
@liamc7097 I don't think a split jerk should be allowed in strongman as it is more about athleticism and technique and less about static strength. Same with fingertip straps deadlifts. At least they removed suits which is a step in the right direction. Hooper would have won regardless of the split jerk or not, but in general I don't think it belongs in strongman. It would be like allowing a chest bounce on the bench press in powerlifting.
@@Nikoncha @Nikoncha Strongman is also about technique, you can't deny that. Push-pressing ; hitching deadlift ; bouncing squat weights on the pads ; rolling the rope on your arms ; using the atlas stone rubber ring to get grip ; bend over to get dumbell down signal...
@@Nikoncha Since when is strongman only about pure strength? Have you seen the events involved? Mateusz's fellow countryman, the Polish GOAT Pudzianowski, is equal parts technique and athleticism and strength. Stop being so salty just because your guy got dominated.
1) likely to save money, if they are paying interviewers on how often they're on the screen, they want to maximize that time. 2) to help get exposure to the different athletes. Most people will stay active and watch the stream during the event. Most will not continue to do so after the event.
Why don't they show the graphic of the standings when they're talking about it? When the event is going they need the current scores always up, which they don't do, and need live overall standings after a few guys, like it's not that hard.
I think on an event like this you should get credit for getting it to your shoulders, like climbing has with the zone, but one press over head is worth more than infinite lifts to shoulder.
@@BroCactus So they should add more leg drive or other technique and get 6 or 7 reps. They are impressive no doubt, but technique and strategy matters.
This year all event was heavy. Most of athlete cant do 1 rep.But Hooper is insane strength.Maybe the best of all around athlete and amazing.Better than Matteusz in ohp event.Crazy
@@1vootman Exactly. Jerk is something like dodging the bar. You just jump under the bar. Mateusz is more like push press. With strict press Mateus is way stronger than Hooper.
@@Arody9 11.5 points behind buddy, seethe and cope harder. Strength, technique and athleticism are all indispensable when it comes to being a great strongman. Mateusz's fellow countryman Mariusz is the perfect embodiment of that. You don't become no.1 by excelling at a single event. Plus, if Mateusz has such amazing static strength, what was he doing scraping the bottom in the elephant bar deadlift?
Yeah, definitely. I'm not sure if he's just not in good condition (looks like he's gassing out), or if he's just not as strong right now as he is in his head.. it's a real shame, I hope it's not an injury of some kind
I think the sciatic nerve pain hit him in this one. He talked about it alot in his training vlogs leading up to the competition. On some days he was fine but on other days he wasnt able to clean or press the axle bc. the back arching which you need for the clean just triggers his lumbal spine issues.
@@e.c.9468 Yes he would probably get disqualified for press out. Some of his reps looked like they might have gotten a couple of whites though. I'll still call them Jerks. I know the rules.
Tom and Mateusz were phenomenal. As a fan, im far more impressed with a push press or a strict press than a jerk. Two totally different lifts, and if it was up to me, I'd disallow it. It's the sumo deadlift of overhead events. I also wouldn't have passed Mitches first stone press on the medaly. He didnt press it over head, he pressed it out, and to the side
Strongman has never been about pure strength, it's always a combination of strength, technique and athleticism. That's what makes Mateusz's fellow countryman Pudzianowski an all-time great, despite never been "the strongest". That's what makes Hooper a more accomplished strongman than Mateusz, even though he's just a rookie. Cope harder buddy.
Bad reffing on this event. The ref gives a windup on his down signals like an MLB pitcher. Takes him 5 seconds to go through the animation of a down signal. Thor got 2 down signals but later they reversed a call, thats the ref's fault not Thor's. 1) Thor dropped the bar as soon as the ref started his down signal (which takes him 5 minutes to complete the down signal) 2) If the ref wouldn't have given a down signal maybe Thor could have continued to press it out 3) If Thor didn' get the 2nd rep maybe he'd have tried harder on his last attempt. Maybe he only dropped the bar on his last attempt because he was satisfied with 2 reps. Basically the ref's bad call cost Thor 3rd place.
The event was promoted as a repetition event mocking old athletes where such weight was considered a max. Yet few athletes could do more than one, so clearly, the weight is too much. I hate when an event has too many ties with no lift or one lift which distorts the overall score. The axle bar circumference is wide and cannot be rotated, leading many to grip it the same way as the deadlift. Using their stomach (not healthy) and severely bending back (will cause back injury) and putting too much weight on the wrist since the bar cannot rest on the shoulder (wrist injuries). I wish if they got rid of this apparatus. There is no reason to injure the athletes when many safer alternatives are available: bar lift (Olympic style), behind the neck bar lift, log lift, tire press...etc. I understand the axle tests more than the press, it tests the grip and various other things, but it too dangerous. Like we have alternatives in the press, the grip can also be tested safer like the farmer walk, hanging timeout..etc. I say get rid of this event.
Pressing the Axle should only be allowed in this event and not jerking it. It's like doing sumo deadlifts because its easier than conventional deadlifts.
Lasha would probably had died. Weightlifters had already come to strongman to try and many of them failed at it. Is just not the same. Not saying Lasha wouldn't get it eventually, but first time doing it it'd be a mess. Ask Raimondo Bermagniss
No. Bermagnis wasn't even close to Lasha's size and strength and he still managed 3rd in 2002 wsm. The only remotely comparable weightlifter turned strongman was Mikhail Koklyaev, who got 3rd in 2010 wsm and also 3rd in a few Arnolds. However, neither qualified for the Olympics or world champs, let alone competed in them. Lasha is a 2 time Oly champ, 7 time world champ, world record holder, and is a massive 6-6, 400+lbs. I am not saying that he can win wsm, but the Apollo wheel would be light weight for him and he could have easily won it at Arnold's, without any special training other than getting a feel for the implement. The Apollo wheel has thicker bar but is much higher off the ground, easier for Lasha to clean, and the jerk would be a joke for him. Hooper is nowhere near Lasha's strength in the jerk and look at what he did.
About 2 and then call it off. Eddie was not the best at cleaning and pressing for reps, super strong shoulders, very bad stamina. Gave the man this AW and will do the 2 must convincing reps ever and then gonna be gassed
Would be a great video if the commentators would focus on what they are watching instead of fussing over the female lifters.. and there opinions on things. if us as viewers cared about how the females did in the competition we would have looked it up and watched it. Listening to these people talk non stop has destroyed it for me.
