Here's a story about Ermey's "insult game" - Gunnery Sgt. Hartman was set to be played by another actor, but R. Lee Ermey won Kubrick over by filming a screen test where Ermey just spat out insults for several minutes without repeating himself while being pelted with pieces of fruit. This impressed Kubrick so much that he hired Ermey for the role, and, even more to Ermey's credit, Kubrick allowed Ermey to improvise on set - something that Kubrick was notoriously famous for never allowing. One story is that Kubrick stopped filming to ask Ermey what a "reach-around" was, and Ermey had to explain.

It's interesting that you mention the difference in intensity you feel between boot camp, and actual battle. The reason the drill sergeants were so tough is they were trying to match the intensity of combat. Kubrick managed to do the same with the audience. We were so stressed by boot camp, that we were relieved to be in Vietnam. Our ship visited Subic Bay in the Philippines in 1987. While filming R. Lee Ermey got a craving for some Chinese food and on the way back home with some grub his car skidded off the road and crashed into ebbing forest, he broke all his ribs on one side, this was at 1 in the morning, ebbing forest was a hotspot for murders, bodies would frequently be found there so people tended to avoid it, no one was around, it was ice cold weather and he was too injured to leave the car. He found it incredibly difficult to maintain his consciousness but knew he had to in order to avoid dying, he flashed his lights and honked his horn for hours on end both to keep himself awake and in the hope someone might see him, someone did and he was rescued what that person was doing in ebbing forest at 1 in the morning remains a mystery to me but it did save R. Lee Ermey's life. Kubrick offered Ermey time off due to his injuries and told him he could put off filming the Happy B-Day Jesus scene but Ermey declined and said it's OK it doesn't hurt so much if he holds one hand behind his back, that's why in that scene he always has one hand positioned behind him, it was too painful otherwise because all his ribs on one side where still healing. BTW Love the vids, you should check out A Clockwork Orange maybe make it an option on a patron poll or something imo it's Kubrick's best.

Are you part of the Military, are you trained to be a combatant, are you taught how to operate a chain of command in and out of battle? ... Whats that ? All 3 ? So you are a Soldier, the difference is where you'd primarily operate and what branch you're filed under.

@@DragonofDarkness13 That's a negative. Marines earn an actual title. A person in the Navy is called a Seaman. A person in the Air Force is called an Airman. There's a reason why if we decide to join another service we don't have to go through their boot camp.
