Full Movie: Red Dot on the Ocean: The Matt Rutherford Story

Once labeled a "youth-at-risk," 30-year old Matt Rutherford risked it all in an attempt to become the first person to sail alone, nonstop around North and South America. Red Dot on the Ocean is the story of Matt's death-defying voyage and the childhood odyssey that shaped him.
#FULLMOVIE #DOCUMENTARY
Director: Amy Flannery
Starring: Matt Rutherford
Red Dot on the Ocean is the story of Matt Rutherford, a severely troubled youth, who became a sailing legend. Departing Annapolis, MD in a scrappy old 27-foot fiberglass sloop without fanfare, 30-year-old Rutherford braved the icebergs of the arctic and mountainous waves of Cape Horn to become the only person to ever sail single-handed, non-stop around the Americas; a 27,000 mile journey many professional sailors declared "a suicide mission." As a youngster, Matt's ADHD and tics made life at home and at school near-impossible. At age 13 he was in drug rehab and he spent his remaining teen years more on the streets than in school. Then, at age 17, locked up in a cell, he had an epiphany and decided to turn his life around. Matt attended and excelled at a special high school for troubled youth where he developed a desire to explore the world. After graduating, he bought his first sailboat - sight unseen on the Internet. Over the next few years he bought boats on the cheap, fixed them up, and learned to sail on the fly. In 2008, Matt embarked on a single-handed voyage from the USA to Europe, West Africa and back across the Atlantic to the Caribbean. He'd found his calling. In 2011, Matt took on his biggest challenge: a solo, nonstop circumnavigation of the Americas. He did it for himself, and to raise money for disabled sailors. After 309 days at sea, Matt achieved his goal and sailed into Annapolis to a hero's welcome. Matt's story is told through his own words and interviews with his family, sailing experts, and others. We use family photos and video of his childhood; Matt's own footage of his early sailing days; and video, audio logs, and stills from his historic around the Americas voyage. To this we add additional ocean footage; archival visuals of earlier explorers Matt admires; and re-enactments from Matt's troubled past. Matt Rutherford's story is full of surprises. It is truly inspiring and makes us all feel we can do more than we ever imagined.

The Albin, Vega 27 sailboat he sailed doesn't get enough discussion. What an amazing story, a 50 year old boat gets minor, minimum maintenance prior to sailing through 3 of probably the 10 worst areas to sail through regarding pure punishment for the boat. That boat held together. She was leaking from stem to stern, getting knocked down, getting slammed by monster waves, getting slammed by monster winds, and she got him home safely. A testament to fiberglass boats and more specifically Albin boats! Cheers!

Completely agree! Do you know whatever happened to the boat? I grew up sailing on a boat manufactured by the same company.

Respect!! That Albin is POWERFULLY noteworthy for keeping her Crew Alive in the most inhospitable sailing conditions, where the Best of the BEST sailors are equally Disabled! I am an OLD, infrequent Offshore, and Disabled, Single-hand Sailor... Boat builder and restorer of basket case sailboats on Sauvie Island Oregon, with rigging that gives my fellow Disabled, access to the Ability of earning their wings through Sailing achievement! This Old Salt truly RESPECTS Matt as the BEST OF THE BEST for showing the Sailing Snobs in most yacht clubs, that they are the disabled ones.. bitches (Huge Smile). PLEASE invest in local schools, and share your skills with our future generations like Matt and his Community

Holy cow I don't believe this, I compared the Albin Vega to my 1985 Pearson 27 Triton and barring my spade rudder, they're very similar in statistics. But I don't think I'd ever try what he did. No, I know I wouldn't try what he did! That's just amazing. I love it that he just wore jeans and regular stuff, not expensive sailing gear. But that's probably why he got that rash! When he said that he doesn't want to go to land because he has adjusted to the ocean, he's in the rhythm, etc, I want to have that feeling some day. Fiberglass sailboats are just amazing machines, unbelievable. Thank you Matt!

I always told parents of my ADHD elementary students no medication. Medication messes these children up. I would tell the parents “let me handle him”. They were blue collar and were with me. I would put ADHD student off to side of class by themself. Then I made sure we went outside to play a lot. Also take lots of breaks during day in class to socialize. I told the parents that ADHD students become successful later in life if they can stay out of trouble. They become your contractors, successful business owners etc.

Omg, how I loath when people think that A.D.D. and ADHD is a disability. We are not disabled, but due to what everyone thinks should be normal we do not fit in. The majority of us are highly intelligent and when we find a subject that peaks out interest we will hyper focus on that subject so how is that a deficit? We are simply different and BORED by your normalcy. Quit trying to subdue us and put forth a challenge for us to conquer, you will find a vastly different student.

I cannot stand giving drugs perscriptions to kids. Some people are just different. Some kids are sharper than others. In prehistoric times adhd was an advantageous trate. Now i think its a mistake to treat it as a disability. The kids are not broken. Society is broken. There were other times in history society thought they knew it all as well.

Agree. As parents we are the only ppl who can fight for our children against big pharma & those in the education system who sometimes don’t even have the credentials to demand a child be medicated. But that also means being close w/out children & punishing them when they misbehave plus working with them in ways to make sure that they aren’t causing problems teachers & the other students. If we do our job as parents then we’ll know if our children truly need to be medicated & then ensure that we do what’s right. I can’t condemn every case of children being medicated because some are necessary but IMHO it should be a last resort because none of these meds have ever been tested in children & no meds have been tested for how they might affect a brain 20, 30, 40, 50 years & more down the road.
