On June 8th, 1991, then president George H.W. Bush called for a Military Parade down Constitution Avenue, Washington D.C. in order to celebrate the nation's triumph in the defense and liberation of Kuwait. Featuring tanks, trucks, ground troops, helicopters, planes, and more, this was the biggest military parade since the end of World War 2 in 1945.

The high water mark of American power and influence, just after the fall of the Soviet Union. You can see here a nation with no doubts at all about its supremacy. It provokes thought when watching from 2022.

This is amazing. My sister and I were 16 at the time (we're twins) and our father was in Desert Shield/Desert Storm serving in the USMC. He wrote to let us know he was marching in the parade. I took pictures of all the tanks and the stealth bombers. The tanks absolutely destroyed Pennsylvania Avenue and the road was nothing but rubble in some places because of all the weight. We met up with him afterwards and the USO closed off the Ellipse as a picnic area for Servicemen and their families. People came up to him and thanked him for his service and welcomed him home. The USO gave us all the food, drinks, and candy we could eat and there were even a couple of Bald Eagles on display. After the USO picnic we went to the Washington Monument grounds and guess who comes walking up to us? Dick Cheney! He took a picture with us and it was printed in the Ft. Belvoir newspaper - I still have it somewhere. Anyways the fireworks display was huge, the ashes and paper from the charges were raining down on us and it smelled like sulfur - we stunk afterwards! A lot of the fireworks were these yellow bows and I guess they went off too soon because they were super close and we even ducked down a couple of times. It was definitely a great time, I'll never forget it. I remember being so proud of my father A MARINE and feeling lucky that we were able to attend the parade and be in the Nation's Capital.

As someone who's tuned into a lot of Russian V-Day parades (Before all the current events occurred) there's a very subtle difference in feeling between Soviet/Russian military parades and American military parades. Russian parades obviously celebrate their victory against Germany in WWII but their parades give you almost a sense of fear and intimidation with a sense of nationalism with the screaming and chanting of soldiers and the band personally singing patriotic songs afterward such as "We are the Army of the People" as the Russian president personally oversees the parade. Meanwhile American parades give you a feeling like this is just another 4th of July celebration and you're just watching a parade with a good ol' BBQ and a hotdog in hand during a good summer breeze as average everyday citizens tune in to see their loved ones marching and show their support or to be out of the house and enjoy the day. It's a niche but noticeable difference between the two superpowers
@yuchenchen8012
@yuchenchen8012 2 года назад
It is a huge difference. The Russian one is very much about creating an image of looking strong. They say the Western armies can't march and look like weaklings, but the Russian army has shown itself to be more and more of a top down army where the individual soldiers can't take any initiative. Their lack of NCOs and general disorganization in Ukraine tells you everything about them. They share many similarities with the middle eastern armies that frequently fought like ass against Israel, because they have a top down structure where loyalty is rewarded more than merit.

I've been told by friends in the service (artillery in the 11th Airborne, formerly part of the 25th Infantry) that there's a very practical reason that you don't see American soldiers in parade goose stepping like their counterparts in Russia or North Korea. The marching form of these men is hardly different from how they'd actually march on foot. It may seem less "classy", but it shows that an American soldier's first duty isn't to go up and down the streets like rockettes, they're fighters first and parade decor second.

Goose steeping like the North Koreans is a good way to destroy your knees. The Germans stopped doing that by 1943 for that reason and do did the Indian border guards by the Indian-Pakistan border. Flashy, yes but not worth spending years in pain due to knee injuries...

Honestly... I don't agree. I used to wish to see more parades here because I think they are really cool. I love military history but I think there is a fine line between such celebrations and militarism. Also keep in mind patriotism is what got us in to so much unnecessary wars. Being critical of our own actions is not unpatriotic. If anything the US is already plenty patriotic. Our populace is already one of the most supportive of our own troops (government benefits aside). Plenty of people already visit military museums, air shows, events, or even directly related to someone who serve. Majority of our major corporations assist in research and development for military hardware. If anything, the military is already very much ingrained in US society. There's also the massive costs of such parades that could be better spent on other things.

Sure it's funny but America is the leader of the free world so I don't care. lgbt stuff isn't gonna change anything, the military still has a certain treshold of discipline every troop needs to stick to, gay or not, 2 moms or not. The military doesn't care if you're black, yellow, gay or lesbian, you're all the same to them. Thus nothing is gonna change.

The 1990s were an amazing time. Sure, there were some terrorists, riots, and school shootings, but those were just annoyances compared to the booming economy, the victory in the Middle East, the exciting new technology of the internet, low unemployment, low inflation, cheap gas, new CGI in movies, the fall of the USSR, and what seemed to be a vindication of everything the country stood for. Japan's economy was slowing, and while fears of them overtaking us were alive until about the mid-90s, they were for nothing. In 2023, much of the luster has worn off. We're still number one and China is slowing down, but the world is still rife with war, terrorism, and Russia is still at it in Europe. We're suffering from un and under-employment, Bidenflation, and colleges are being run by genocidal woke terrorists who, as it turns out, hate Jews, hate Christianity, hate America, and hate the West. On top of that, wokists in Hollywood have ruined countless franchises, including Star Wars, Star Trek, Marvel, DC, and have even tainted Middle Earth along the fringes ("Rings of Power" isn't canon to the books), among countless others. It's like we're stuck in the 1970s all over again. Here's hoping for a new 80s. Then a new 90s.

@calvinbarlow8947
@calvinbarlow8947 9 месяцев назад
Some people think that the Russian parades are vain, or that the parade is signaling a totalitarian regime.... but you are all wrong. Parades are about national unity and pride, not about displaying power except in the form of unity and dedication to their national identity or cause. Really think about it. Marching bands and songs stir up a spirit of working towards a single goal: defending your country. In the case of the USA, we should have parades with bands, singing, and displays of discipline. All of this should be directed to unity in defending our rights. Let me be clear: rights and liberty, not government interests or politics. Our Constitution of these States and Bill of Rights should have everyone's loyalty. If not, it will not he long before our country is fully divided. A nation divided against itself cannot stand.
