My friends, painting a modern armor model is very different from historical tanks. Of course, it depends on many factors, especially if it was deployed, but on a peacetime vehicle, your weathering possibilities are often limited to earth effects. Luckily, these vehicles get extremely dirty, and what's better, there's a weird urban camouflage made from old rags and wooden pallets!

I find it really refreshing that you’re painting a tank without so much weathering and damage - it looks amazing

The model turned out great!!! I'm a Panzergrenadier Feldwebel 😀 and I noticed two things! When we're in practice, we'll attach the tow rope to the stern! If the vehicle needs to be towed! 2 We cover the license plates and reflector with duct tape! And we cover the indicators and headlights with cloths or jute. We unscrew the yellow beacon on the tower! But otherwise, as always, it's fantastic work and a great video!!!! Greetings from Frankfurt/M Panzergrenadiere : Dran Drauf Drüber 🇩🇪

Thanks a lot for your detailed insights! I knew that I was making mistakes while adding/painting some of the details, just didn't know what they would be :D I basically just applied various ideas from reference images into one model without knowing the specifics.

No problem 😀The errors in the paintwork are not noticeable, we Germans have adopted a lot from WW2. Until 10 years ago we would still be trained in the same way as we were back then! It wasn't until body armor came along that training was modernized! But we kept everything for camouflage and practical activities such as getting the tow rope ready for use! Dur Have a nice weekend and have fun and patience with model building 😀🤗 Greetings Dominique

Back when i still served in the Swiss army, we did have to "camo" up our Leopards and were often told that the idea is more to give you that few second edge on the enemy as they try to figure out what they're looking at. The "pallet pile" camo here can be effective at a glance overall so it makes sense. I love the near "clean" look vs your usual damaged vehicles, its also good practise for you i think to do something different and that's how we all learn :D

You know whats funny is when i was on my first deployment which later turned into going to afganistan, we did something similar in training. I was a Marine Grunt. When wed find a spot for a firebase, well dig like grunts do, temporarily... the engineers would come help moving dirt and have stuff on pallets. The backhoe would Dig a trench 1 bucket wide. We stuck the pallets in the trench then put branches and poles with camo netting in them. Its to semi conceal what we're doing or at the very least make it impossible to make out. We gotta put food, water, fuel and supplies in multiple spots. We need a generator, comms, mortars and sleeping quarters to be unknown, in the base.

I literally had to Google this to see if you were having us on. As a British Challenger 2 crewman I have never seen or heard of this being done before. Also I love how the Germans project the camouflage pattern onto the tank to paint it. If us Brits are lucky REME will have a spray booth and do it, otherwise we're handed a tine of black paint and a brush and told to go paint some squiggly line patterns 😂 It probably doesn't help that we can't have them with painted camouflage in the UK as apparently its too aggressive, I'm pretty sure it's the 76 tonnes of metal rather than the paint which is the more aggressive part, but what do I know 🤷‍♂️ Great build and paint job as usual.

Amazing work, and a very pleasant video to watch. I couldn't believe you weren't making up this "urban camo" stuff, so I went and looked for some references. And I mean: wow. You actually went very easy on the crap hanging from the tank. Those Pumas in the photos look like they first went full-speed through a dumpster behind an Aldi warehouse AND THEN the whole unit decided to hang their wet underwear on the gun to dry.

I always liked adding holigraphic paper to my modern optics in place of paintng them. It gives a pretty realistic effect for how reflective modern optics look and also provide a super interesting dynamic detail that changes depending on what direction you look at it. It can be a little tricky to aply but super worth it. Amazing job dude been looking forward to this video for a while

@horrido666

Its probably a little different for each country, but in the US Army all the camo patterns are standardized. Even a jeep. There are two places where they are painted. #1 in the factory, and #2 during maintenance we repaint (about once a year IIRC). The painting is done by either the crews, or the mechanics in the HQ platoon. The mechanics are almost always busy and understaffed, so often they only spray on the base coat, and the crews brush on the camo pattern. The crews are also the ones who caulk the vehicles (draw the patterns on the vehicles), and because of this you get some variation. In West Germany, everything was sprayed. Never had to paint anything when I was over there. Never asked, either.

I called it the last video, pallet armor/camo! It reminds me of that episode of Knight Rider episode when they turn Kitt into a rolling trash heap with the push of a button to camoflague themselves. Night Shift Rider, even has that sleek look of the Knight industries 2000Pontiac Transam. Looking trashy but beautiful!

I like the pallet idea, but it gave me ideas. I think it would be cool to see a tank camouflaged like it was already destroyed and/or abandoned. Fallen bricks, broken branches, dark scorches, and junk (especially if it looks like it was from inside the vehicle) strewn about. At any rate, really enjoyed the build.

I've said it before, that you seem to do it with such ease. Making models and basic painting is going quite well for me, I think, but then comes the finishing. This remains a major problem for me and so many models have ended up in the trash bin because they simply do not come close to your finish. You are an inspiration to many people who start model making.

Tanks covered in random scraps the crew found will never not look great, be it Soviet tankers welding bed-frames on their T-34s in the Eastern Front, US tankers covering their Pattons with crates and bushes in the jungles of Vietnam, or even today with Asian countries covering their APCs and IFVs with wood and cardboard boxes. There's just something about the contrast between the professional, purpose-made look of tanks and the DIY, hacked-together look of wood scraps that just goes so well together, and I believe your Puma model just represents that so well.

Very nice as usual. I believe the Puma tracks have like most modern tanks rubber pads on the inside as well though and are not shiny metal…..as far as the pattern painting goes, I remember when I visited a Leopard 2 refurbishing plant in Germany, how they used a wireframe contraption mounted around the tank where the paintgun would hook into, to guide the painter with the camo pattern. That really blew my mind and explained why all of the vehicle specific patterns were so uniform. That was like 20 years ago though…😊

A fun, weird model, no doubt but something unusual like this is always good to inject a little variety in our builds. One thing I've noticed about your recent builds though is your use of commercial products like washes and pigments. These 'convenience products' are great but one of the appeals of your channel has always been the use of products you made yourself like garden dirt (trademark, lol) and washes. Sometimes, new modellers start to think they 'need' these products to get great results and the hobby gets more expensive, very quickly. I'd really like to see you go back to your roots and show us a little more 'creativity' when painting and weathering your builds 👍 Great work as always, enjoyed the build!
