I'm sure I wasn'tt the only one who was super disappointed when the pad was blown apart, Elon even publicly talked about how that was probably a mistake to not reinforce before testing. But look how fast they have turned it around. I think this has a real chance of entirely protecting the pad. Let's hope. Great video, the music was perfect

Beautiful shots! But doesn't it seem like a small amount of water compared to other deluge systems? NASA's water deluge system dumps about 300k gallons in 40 seconds or so during launch, and that's for less powerful rockets. It's hard to tell how much is being used here, and maybe NASA's system _looks_ more impressive shooting up to 100 feet in the air. It'll be interesting to see what numbers SpaceX releases for it.
@rubikmonat6589
@rubikmonat6589 Год назад
It''ll be synchronised to the engine startup. They cut it short (see the pressure release in the background), and it barely held at peak flow, I expect they'd allow the gas to follow the water out in a full activation. The thrust to weight ratio will be much higher and the ship will be off the pad in much less time than before. I'm not too concerned myself, it seems like a lot more precision system.
@seasickrhino8926
@seasickrhino8926 Год назад
@@rubikmonat6589to add, the tank farm for this system is not complete; at least one additional water tank is known to be used for the farm but was not installed for this test. This was a full pressure test, but not a full operations test. That will likely wait for a SF or WDR.
@TheEvilmooseofdoom
@TheEvilmooseofdoom Год назад
'Seem' is meaningless we have no idea how much water flowed and until we do all you can do is guess and that's folly since it's hard to keep the scale of the thing clear at times.
@bongi6811
@bongi6811 Год назад
According to Zack from CSI Starbase, the water volume is currently about 64% of the deluge system at the SLS launchpad 39B and will soon be upgraded to about 82% since there is still an empty spot for another water tank which is currently being transported to Starbase. It's also important to keep in mind that this isn't just a deluge system and actually more like an actively cooled blast diverter which likely requires less water than a full deluge system would.
@desmond-hawkins
@desmond-hawkins Год назад
@@bongi6811 Thanks for commenting with actual numbers! 82% is pretty good. Also very good point about the way this water is used, to cool the plate rather than to be dumped straight into the path of the exhaust. Now how well this steel plate deal with the blast remains to be seen, it'll be interesting to see how the next attempt goes.

Why is SpaceX so against making a trench... I don't get it. Can someone please explain to me why they are willing to risk yet another blow out failure instead of making a trench?
@59seank
@59seank Год назад
I don't think they're against making a trench. They use trenches for all the Falcon 9 launches. The water table at Boca Chica is very high, so simply digging a trench would not work. SpaceX is in a hurry.
@damo87araimo
@damo87araimo Год назад
Minimum 3 years to build a trench, and that's if it ever gets approval. A trench is not an option, this is the only way.
@seasickrhino8926
@seasickrhino8926 Год назад
@@damo87araimoto add to this, the booster is supposed to support multiple flight/day in the future, so removing it for inspections is suboptimal. It’s easier to have a flat pad from which you can easily move systems around on without the more irritating and complexity of having a massive hole out the bottom. Accessing the booster for a quick inspection will be much easier with this system.
@TheEvilmooseofdoom
@TheEvilmooseofdoom Год назад
They don't need a trench, the whole point of a trench is to give clearance under a rocket for a diverter. They raised the table rather than dig. The part they skipped the first time was a diverter. This call for a 'trench' is meaningless.

@@mikewallace8087they usually have loud enough alarms to scare them. These birds are also far closer to the camera than the pad. Otherwise they would be half the size of a person… which (to my knowledge) doesn’t happen in Boca Chica.
@seasickrhino8926
@seasickrhino8926 Год назад
I don’t think they did; the scale of the birds is too far off for them to be at the splash zone of the pad. If they were, the birds would be ~3 feet tall when standing. I’m no biologist, but I don’t think Boca Chica is home to the world’s tallest birds.
@atanasapostolov2731
@atanasapostolov2731 Год назад
Nah the birds deffinetely got obliterated. Take a look at the very first bird that we see flying. It flies behind the leg of the mount so its deffinetely not closer to the camera. Also if you take closer look you can see a bird stood on the guard rail of the mount. When the water errupts it tries to fly off but its too late. Scale seems weird because its very zoomed in but they were deffinetely right on the mount otherwise they couldnt be stood on it, or flying behind its legs
