From the 2002 season review DVD. We need these on demand through a streaming service! So much content that people need to see.

Peak Yvan Muller that. The round prior to Donington, he took Thompson out of the race to keep himself in title contention and laughed it off post-race. Thompson gets his own back at the start of race 1, Muller starts giving it lip over the radio and gives a post-race presser complaining that he’s always racing fairly and others are crashing into him. Then he spends race 2 bouncing into the two egg:sport cars and eventually has to retire because of the damage he caused himself. Ridiculously talented driver, one of the best the BTCC has ever seen in terms of raw talent, but Christ alive he was a knob.

There are two drivers on that grid who are still racing in BTCC today...21 years later. Tom Chilton was driving for Barwell Motorsport in his first season, aged 17 at the time. Colin Turkington was driving for Team Atomic Kitten which was West Surrey Racing, where he has subsequently won four championships. He was 20 years of age during this season.

I was there with my son and we met James after the awards and got a picture of my son with him and his trophy, A nice fellow. Can I also mention Paul O'Neil, my son was after an autograph and Paul took time out from a beer with his mates to find a pen for the autograph, another decent chap. (nothing said about muller you notice lol)

It’s a shame the BTC regulations never really took off as the racing was always really exciting. But following on from the Super Touring regs was always going to be a tough act to follow.

Incredible stuff. Would love to see more of these. The V8 super car series released old race footage during covid whilst racing was suspended, be fantastic if there could be coverage from the late 90’s/early thousands, through to 2015ish

I have a total blank about this era of BTCC... I had no idea Matt Neil ever drove an Astra... in my head he went straight from a Primera to a Civic. So many legends. And Paul O'Neill. FWIW My no-mark iRacer's view of Donington GP is that it's horrible. That extra loop completely ruins the rhythm of the lap compared to the National circuit.

Wish BTCC did more heli/blimp cams. I think brands last year plus this race are the only two I can remember from the last 20ish years

Very early noughties seen as a lowpoint for the Championship. But it did produce some good rcing at times and I love the cars of the time

Sprint and feature races far more entertaining than todays BTCC.

Loved the styling of the cars from this era, it's hard to believe this was the worst era for BTCC. There were some great drivers and races. Probably too soon after the Mega super tourer era.

I won't be surprised if fans will go and sit on the bank at the GP loop this weekend.
