We got our first glimpse of the Gamestation Pro (then named the Gamestation Plus) at CES 2023 along with the news that ‪@MyArcaderetro‬ and ‪@atari‬ would be collaborating on new products this year. Updates on the product's release then went quiet for months. As it turns out, engineers at My Arcade spent that time adding new and exciting features to this modern plug-and-play, and it's finally ready for release!
Founded in 1972, Atari® changed the way we approached gaming - from the way games were designed to the way they were played. Atari’s iconic games, including Asteroids®, Centipede® and Missile Command® have been played by many millions. Half a century later, Atari® ’s legacy endures. The Gamestation Pro has over 200 games, including Atari® 2600, Atari® 5200, Atari® 7800 and Atari® arcade games.
FEATURES
• Officially licensed titles.
• Packed with over 200 built-in Atari® + bonus titles.
• System connects directly to TV.
• Two 2.4 GHz wireless joysticks, inspired by the original Atari joysticks, include paddles for paddle games like Breakout®, Warlords® and many more.
• Intuitive user interface
• Game save options.
• Dynamic RGB LED lights.
• Includes USB power cable and HDMI® cable.
• Joysticks require 4 AA batteries each (not included).
• Titles include Asteroids®, Centipede®, Pong®, Breakout®, Missile Command®, Crystal Castles® and many more

I'm happy they included also many black and white arcade games such as Atari's X's and O's Football, Baseball, Basketball, and Soccer. I didn't expect to ever see them on a system like this. I wonder how they can be played with a joystick instead of the trackball, but nonetheless, it's truly great to see them here.
@NormireX
@NormireX 9 месяцев назад
Sorry, but some criticism for you. The joystick design isn't the problem. You are not holding it properly to easily utilize the B and C buttons. I had a 2600 in the early to mid 80s and we had joysticks with a button on top, you are supposed to grip the stick not daintily hold it with a few fingers like you were. Try it with an actual grip and the issues hitting those buttons go away.
@wormquartet
@wormquartet 8 месяцев назад
That was what I thought as well, but having now used one, the joystick actually isn't big enough for an adult hand to hold it and use the B and C button.

First, let me say… FANTASTIC VIDEO REVIEW AND DEMO!!!!! Great job on the amount of information you somehow shoved into this relatively short video. Very engaging and exciting! Now, for my comments on the device. Wow!!! This little unit is amazing!! The game selection is extremely good. And I love most of the device features. Yes, the buttons could prove to be frustrating. But, I am so glad that the mfr chose to listen to your knowledgeable input early on to make midstream changes that changed this unit from an okay device to a great device! Thanks for you love and dedication to the genre. Please please PLEASE keep climbing to the top of the retro gaming fanbase influencers. Excellent video! Finally, PLEASE make a full video of the possibilities of the addition of the SD card slot. This is a complete game changer! I really wanna see what this thing can do in overdrive!!!

What an amazing system! I love the fact that they included some Atari arcade games that not many would remember. What surprised me in that line up was seeing that the game Quantum was included! That game was one of my mother's favorites, but it makes me wonder how that game performs with the joystick since this game also used a trackball like Centipede and Millipede. I had to look up information on that game because I was 85% sure I remembered it had a trackball. Out of all of the systems like this that is similar to the Flashback consoles, this one does seem like the one to get. Not to mention that knowing that you can do all sorts of neat things with that SD card slot, I would definitely get that thing running like you do so making a follow up video might be a great thing!

Jon, thanks for covering the 5200 version of Missile Command. This was one of the games on the original console that required analog control (the 3rd party digital sticks didn't work properly with it), so it's good to see that the game works properly in this context. I"ll never understand why they don't supplement the 5200 collection with some 400/800 titles. Yes there could be licensing issues, but surely there are 3rd party titles that do not pose copyright issues in 2023. Heck, I' be happy with the addition of Captain Beeble & Jumpman. Excdllent review of the system...certainly more interesting than the 2600+ (then again, I don't have a 2600 or 7800 cartridge collection, so cartridge compatibility is not important to me (but I assume that most cartridge collectors already have a compatible (and authentic) console, and the skills to keep it operating (which has become the skill to watch RU-vid videos in most cases.) I guess the bottom line is that even my oldest computer is capable of running Atari emulator or MAME at full-speed. And so these gadgets just aren't attractive to me. The RM800XL is the exception, since it will allow the connection of a 1050 Disc Drive (or modern SD card equivalent... opening up access to thousands of Atari's best titles and the ability to write your own. But I'd get this just for the joystick...the lattency using a DB9 to USB adapter (as I do now) is just not tolerable, and I've never had a modern USB CX-10 clone not die the first time I use it....the stick often breaking in my hand on the first use. So if these are bluetooth or PC compatible they'd be worth the price of the system. (and as you pointed out elsewhere, being an ATGames release, I won't have issues finding them locally as I did with the VCS.) and $100 is less than the price of one VCS controller shipped ($169 CAD plus shipping/duty on eBay right now) Now back to your review, so we can learn about the SD card slot functions.
@PeBoVision
@PeBoVision 9 месяцев назад
@@daleb4148 As 8-bit computer software approaches 50 years old, and the threat of it falling into the public domain looms large, we will see an influx of 400/800 titles and machines to play them on, so as to re-assert expiring copyright claims. That's exactly what Atari50 accomplished for "Atari" and why Disney schedules re-releases, remasters and remakes of their older properties. Ageing copyrights are a use-it-or-lose-it game. Yes, $$$ is the motivation, but the ultimate goal is to ensure that only licenced, authorized use remains permissible far beyond the regular shelf-life of the products. It happens in every industry where intellectual property is under corporate ownership.

I'll miss out on seeing this till next Wednesday. Presently in the middle of moving and that's when the technician is coming to set the cable and internet up at the new place. Still neat that they put 200+ games on it. I honestly think this is intended for people like myself who no longer have their old physical carts. Why else release it at the same time as the 2600+? It'd make no sense.

The move went surprisingly well. Just a few bagloads of stuff left to bring up to the new place and I was lucky enough to have full bars. I'll definitely look into snagging the Gamestation.

Bravo taking a relative scientific approach to explaining the feel of the joysticks 🕹 that really meant a lot to me. really appreciate that attention to detail

Still somewhat curious about this but I feel like it has had its thunder stolen by the Atari 2600+. Pre-ordered the Atari 2600+ but the Gamestation will have to seriously impress to make me want to buy both.

For me it depends on the 5200 titles. The thing that I don't like about the 2600+ is that it's an emulator. I would have loved it if it was a 7800 based unit.
@legendsflashback
@legendsflashback 9 месяцев назад
So this another thing besides 2600+ ? What it about ?
@cryptocoffee13
@cryptocoffee13 9 месяцев назад
I think there's only 6 or 7 5200 titles on this. Wondering how the joystick performs, the paddles and if the unit will work with other controllers or not.
@FormulaFox
@FormulaFox 9 месяцев назад
Ultimately, the 2600+ is for people who want to continue to use cartridges for that MAXIMUM classic experience. This is for people who don't want to go that far. There's a market for both, and I'm glad to see Atari partnering up with the right people to do both. AtGames kept doing something JUST wrong enough to keep me from buying. This scratches my itch, as I don't have the wherewithal to start collecting cartridges.

Great video, Jon! It's a nice and professional overview. The only thing I find annoying and dislike is the infomercial-style music playing in the background. Other than that, I've thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks for providing this first comprehensive look at the Atari Gamestation Pro system. Cheers!

Remapping the three red buttons on the joystick to play Missile Command would have been a nice way to replicate the arcade version of the game. And, it would still be able to retain the functionality of using the joystick buttons to navigate back to the home/menu.

I want to complement you on something. I noticed that you held the controller like we all did back in 80’s. I’ve seen other reviews on Atari (most by younger people) and they have no idea how to use that joystick. I’ve seen some use it like a thumb stick on a modern controller, even! You wouldn’t think that would be that hard but apparently some people have no idea what to do with an Atari joystick! 😆
