Hey guys! During one of my recent trips to IAD, I took a ride aboard one of Dulles' classic & rare mobile lounges after returning back to the airport from Europe. My flight came into Concourse C and so to get over to customs, I had to take the mobile lounge basically all the way across the airport. I personally like people movers purely for their speed, but I never get tired of taking vehicles that travel above ground on the taxiways & airport apron where I get to see all the various aircraft at their gates. The mobile lounge is a pretty cool experience and Dulles is the only airport that I know of that still uses them. Hope you guys enjoy this raw, un-subtitled, no music video!

This airport and the mobile lounge vehicles were used in the opening scenes of "Airport 1975" Awesome 747 movie!

The mobile lounge is a great way to see what activities go on the ramp and how aircraft is moved around 😀

I’m in Washington now! And I the mobile lounge is a cool ride between terminals

Honestly I have to say that I’m very lucky to be able to ride these every flight. When I fly from Istanbul to Washington there is a 99% chance that I transfer to a mobile lounge to get to the arrival section, these things are super rare and riding on these things are a fun and unique experience!

Lucky you. The one time I rode one was at Montreal-Mirabel airport in 1989. I was a young boy and I was puzzled because I knew we were off the plane, but we were in a vehicle that wasn't a bus, but had windows the same shape as on the plane!

I ride these every week. It's just a bus.

Been flying nearly every week for the last 4 years for work all over the US. Finally ended up one one of these earlier this week. Never seen anything like it!

Rode these when passing through Dulles back in the 80s, I seem to recall them pulling up right alongside our plane but guess that may be my memory playing tricks one me.
@abchasi27
@abchasi27 3 года назад
Some of them do that. Mostly for international flights so you can be transported directly to international arrivals.
@davebest5624
@davebest5624 3 года назад
@@abchasi27 do they actually dock with the plane or do you leave the plane and climb some stairs to the lounge? I passed through four times but can’t recall as it was that long ago.
@abchasi27
@abchasi27 3 года назад
@@davebest5624 depends on the model. Some are designed to dock directly with the aircraft’s door, so you step out the plane and right into the lounge (I’ve done that before). The other model just goes between terminals. As far as I know there’s no way to get to the lounge from the tarmac.

How many other airports have these things I know Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson and Mexico City have used them do they still operate?

This is one of the regular interterminal lounges. The other lounges seen at the start of the video are the plane mates, which are used to get to aircraft on hardstand and cannot access a jetbridge for one reason or another.

Before September 11th you were allowed to ride them to the other side to pickup or drop passengers. It made trips to the fun as a kid.

Actually when I flew Turkish Airline’s A330’s from Istanbul to Washington, everybody would transfer to the mobile lounge! I was on these flights beginning in ‘09 I believe so it was long after 9/11

@@RobloxianX I don’t know when the practice stop. We’ve never been able to go past the front part of the airport for years. We’ve always had to say our goodbyes there and then the traveler proceeds alone. I’ve flown a few times out Dulles since 9/11 (05, 08, 10, 15) and never been able to have family escort me past that point. Picked up people too and the same thing

@@ShottaKenya I guess its now used for terminal to terminal transportation
@ShottaKenya

@@RobloxianX right, and I think even that’s rare since there’s the underground rail system? I’ve only been on those travel lounges once in the past decade
@RobloxianX

@@ShottaKenya I think the rail system is used if you are going from the entrance point to a terminal. I think the lounges are used to transport people from terminals that dont have the rail system to the baggage claim

YUL has them, when it's very busy in the summer they park some planes at the remote stands and use these "buses" to offload or board the passengers. They were used often at the old YMX airport. When YMX closed down they transferred some of them to YUL to use them there. We call them PTV (Passenger Transport Vehicle)

There has to be a Mobile Lounge design capable of reaching the A380 upper deck since A380 also files to IAD

Are you freaking kidding me? The mobile lounges are the main reason I avoid using IAD. You get off the plane following a long international or trans-continental flight and you’re not done yet. You are crammed inside a tube commemorating the best technology the sixties had to offer and bounce across the tarmac before getting to customs or baggage claim. Please…this is NOT something chic, luxurious or even comfortable. Totally ridiculous.

Luckily they have the underground train system now, which I assume is much faster.

True, however, they STILL use the “doofus wagons” for many international arrivals. Got caught on one two years ago returning from HKG.

It's absolutely not meant to be luxurious. It's a bus that takes you around.

You have no call to get snippy Jerry, the mobile lounges are a cool thing for plane enthusiasts. Maybe you should stick to automobiles since that's your thing.
