Great video, like the fact you’re open to moving things around because I feel like I’m always changing my mind where things are going and end up feeling like I’ve wasted time.. need to stop and just accept that’s how it is as we make way for new ideas. Love your vegetable plots!

HI Claire, I was exactly the same before. I used to think everything should be permanent and didn’t like a temporary feel but the reality is, for us especially, it has to be temporary, or semi permanent if that helps the thought process 😂 thanks for watching and commenting 💕

It may be possible in your situation to plumb your grey water from sinks, showers, baths dishwashers and washing machines into a storage tank for water plants. This would allow your septic tank to last longer before empties and allow you to recycle water which during times of draught could be very useful for you. Loved the tours I'm 23 and currently training as a gardener and would love to have my own smallholding one day

Just watched Clarkson farm recently, for 500 Acres the total income was 40kGBP. This does not include any cost of mortgage interest payment for LAND. Also the tractors were already bought of. I cant imagine how small farmers can survive. UK govt must not stop subsidies

Het Tracey and family, loved the tour..it makes u realise with careful planning how much you can achieve on a small acreage, especially when u go as organic as possible. How funny is Lidia..quite the attention seeker😄 with the chickens, do you let them out while you work or only when you are home? Can’t wait for a veggie tour. Take care🐴🐑🐓

That was a great walk through Tracy. The birds have discovered our cherry tree aswell, never mind there's plenty to share around! I hope you do a video on the cherry brandy as I fancy giving it a go. There's only so much cherry crumble & pie the family can take lol Stay safe, the lurgy is still out there x

Lovely tour of your smallholding, Tracy. It looks wonderful. Those panels you inherited from the previous owners are great! A fantastic way to pop up poultry pens in tucked away corners. Have you considered using free woodchips for the chickens to scratch about in? And make compost? I’m sure you have but can imagine it’s another unsightly “pile” to have to manage. It’s difficult at the best of times to keep muck heaps and compost bays looking tidy. #Beenthere 😩 It’s just that I’ve had great success using wc in chicken coops. The hens get soooo excited when I top it up with fresh chips because it’s full of wood lice and centipedes or worms if it’s not brand new chips. I store the compost in a wheelie bin and pull it around the garden beds to mulch around plants when needed. You asked about the goat bedding. Maybe put it straight onto a dormant bed and cover with cheap damp proof membrane from a builder’s merchant or Amazon, or spare tarp/weed suppressant for the winter. It’ll be well decomposed and neutralized/cooled by soil biology and worms by early spring. Keeps the nettle weed seeds off, too. Plant transplants through the top of the mulch if the worms haven’t digested it all by then. 👍🏻

Thank you for the lovely, detailed reply. We looked in to wood chips before but there was a cost so if we can find some free or do our own then that would definitely be an idea. Maybe later in the year when farmers are pruning. Lots of good ideas, I love this little community we’re building here with such fantastic ideas to share. Take care x

We both loved watching this tour Tracy! It helped put everything in perspective in terms of what you do on the space you have - and we love what you’ve achieved so far. The bottom veg plot where the pigs are - do you have any plans for rotating that over time? Swapping the pigs into the veg plot and vice versa? Just wondering if that’s even possible. It’s looking very productive anyway. A really enjoyable walk through your smallholding. We’d love it if you’d do this on a semi regular basis as the seasons change. 😉👍 xx

Thank you both, I’m so pleased. I hope to do it every couple of months, more or less depending on the seasons as you say! Re the pigs, we have done that before and it worked well, they cleared the whole area however this time we are thinking of a big polytunnel 😱 on that space so we’re not sure yet for us, but it definitely works to rotate them on to growing space to clean up for the winter if you don’t have winter crops in. Fabulous tour, it was great to see the actual layout and where things relate to each other, plus also how you manage your smallholding. Now if I could wave a magic wand, how many acres would you like to have, both whilst working full time and if the smallholding was your full time job? x

Oooh thank you for your comment and allowing us to dream with the question! If we worked still, maybe another 5 acres would be helpful, to rotate the animals. We still wouldn’t cut our own hay etc. now if we didn’t work, that’s a different story. We would like enough to produce hay and straw, plus grow more to allow us to set up a market garden… so you’re in the multiples of tens. Ahhhh if only ❤️

I love hearing what you do but I not thinking of doing it just like seeing what you do. How on Earth do you manage and both of you work full time😮what work do you both do? I would have loved to have done this when I was younger. I did live on a farm when I was married to my first husband he was a stockman pig man and shepherd at different times. My 4 kids born on the farm so they were all born into that life. But a long way from that life now. Anyway we getting 3-4 chickens for our back garden in next few weeks hopefully. That’s the extent of our livestock apart from a cat🤣🤣🤣🤣

Another brilliant video, thank you. I’d be really interested to know more about your ‘origin story’ - when and why did you decide this life was for you and when you were looking to buy your smallholding, did you set out with a list of must-haves or did you just explore lots of properties and go with your gut? We are hoping to do this ourselves in the next few years but are currently in our mid forties and part of me worries we may have left it too late and might find the physicality of it all too much as we probably have another four or five years before it can be a reality. We are fit and healthy now but it is a worry as we get older!

Never too old!! That’s my first comment 😉 we’re the same age ish and would take it on again in a heart beat, you just need to adjust accordingly. It’s perfectly doable at all ages IMO. Maybe you have to get help for some things, that could be people or machines, maybe you pay them or cook them a meal or they do it because they like you. Those kind of favours are once a year or so in my experience. It’s not just age, it’s the skills, we can’t all do everything and if that was a stopper then we couldn’t ever do this so absolutely never too old 😘 I’m passionate about that 😉 We’re actually thinking about a video on the topic of our origin if you like, lots of thoughts which this will help develop so that you very much. Once you know it’s what you want, that’s the first step, best of luck for you and hopefully the video won’t be too far away x

Thanks for the tour. Found this video as we are considering a hosue with 7 acres. Weve never done any small holding or serrious growinh as we are young with young kids but getting nearer to 30 and wonderinh if this is the direction we should take out family. We have 3 kids aged 3 and under, do you think its a crazy idea to through ourselves into so much work with such a young family? Im a sahm but our youngest is 2m so life is hard enough trying to grow the veggies we are! But i grew up with chickens and a big veg patch that we ate off and we will do that when we upsize, but its whether 7 acres is too much to take on... Decisions decisions!

That’s a really exciting decision to have to make. Best of luck to you. My experience is all I can go on, we have the 2 kids ages 5 and 8 and it was the best thing we’ve done. It has its challenges, but what doesn’t.

Hi, I'm a bit late to the party.. But I loved your video, a smallholding is my DREAM, but I can't even get a deposit together for a tiny house, nevermind a small farm... I am really interested in the shopping app that you use, that you tick what you need and automatically updates the prices online? I can't seem to find one anywhere. Putting the items and prices manually is so much work, but it would help me with meal planning and cutting our costs which is where I can cut the most but also spend the most as I cook from scratch! Love from Lancashire xx

Hi Hannah. We did a Q and A video recently if you ever get time to watch it, it may help. However mostly it was Ila combination of internet research and driving around the area we wanted to live (it’s all within an hour or so when we first started looking). We also put letters through doors of places that may come up. That didn’t get us here but worth a try imo. Best of luck, my advice is stay positive as there’s plenty of bumps but it is worth it

Thanks for this, we’re doing a video on our story soon which hopefully will help. Around here though they’re like hen’s teeth. My advice is to expand your area of search even if just a little, that’s how we found our place. Talk to the neighbours, check the local pub and ask them if there’s an area you like. We pushed ourselves financially which isn’t for everyone but we knew that would be the only way we could do it in our chapter of life (working, kids, bills etc)
