Full speech: McConnell denounces Trump's conduct after voting to acquit at impeachment trial

After voting to acquit former President Trump in his second impeachment trial, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell gave a scathing address denouncing Mr. Trump's conduct, saying the January 6th Capitol assault "was a foreseeable consequence of the growing crescendo of false statements, conspiracy theories and reckless hyperbole which the defeated president kept shouting into the largest megaphone on planet earth." But he argued impeachment was unconstitutional because Mr. Trump is already out of office. Watch his remarks in full.

Term limits, no book writing until 10 years out of office, FBI background checks before running for office, and no getting rich off of their current positions. As long as he can leave office (or resign) before the trial is over he is now out of Senate jurisdiction. If Nixon could have Watergated after this trial wouldn't have needed Ford's pardon.

From now on any future impeachment lawyers can point at McConnell's speech here and say "See, there's precident. You can't impeach a former president no matter what they've done." No...we are not proud. I have written my senator, over and over...begged that he find some kind of morality. I am a democrat trying to survive in a state I love; I am so disgusted I could throw up. I could scream...he indicated that the house “chose” to deliver the article of impeachment after that monster was out of office...he made that decision...he refused to reconvene the senate. Then there was the matter of his silence as the orange obscenity built his private army and shouted his lies into the “largest megaphone on planet earth.” He could have shut that down at any point and many of us begged him to. Does this man think we are all stupid? I want the rest of America and the world to know that not all of us here in Ky are unaware; I am just so done.

Well he did, not "yesterday" but a few weeks earlier. I then wrote a comment about hoping he'd grow more of that backbone but that I doubted it, as McConnell had backpedalled so often that I worried his spine had grown in the wrong place. I know it's easy to feel this way right now. I did at first too, but we still have the vote. It's our greatest tool right now. We voted Trump out before and we can keep him out later, too. Just because we have taxation without sane majority representation, that doesn't mean that we are powerless to improve everything. We are not. We can use this time to get people involved in making positive change and raising awareness, because that combination converts directly into votes for better people and policies! Please don't lose faith in the good things this country has to offer. Just in idiots who don't deserve our time.

The 'Other Party" has now set the path of history. Today, our congress failed to protect our democracy. Future attacks are imminent. This is what we get from TWO PARTY POLITICS. McConnell justifies his actions like this: ‘The Senate’s decision does not condone anything that happened on or before that terrible day. It simply shows that Senators did what the former President failed to do: We put our constitutional duty first.’ That is what we get from the "other party", as in two parties - We get "justification". We need to do away with two-party. There are other candidates out there, we need to give them a look.

The constitutionality was voted on prior to the trial, to vote not guilty based on a belief that the trial was unconstitutional should be a violation of congress and the constitution!

I must say Senator McConnell is right on two fronts. When the article said a president "shall" be removed from office that is a powerful statement. When the law says "shall" , that means it will definitely be done. How can you remove a president who is already gone. The second thing he said that's right; there is a criminal and civil justice system. That is the legal vehicle to bring 45 to justice. I am not a fan of Senator McConnell but he showed me he is a smart thinking man.
