I love that these past few years several locomotives across the country have been restored to operational standards so we can see them living and breathing again. Just amazing to see them in person.

I'm excited for these engines to be restored to operating condition. UP 3985 is a nice, and powerful locomotive, but not as compared to the 4014. Now the 5511, it's the only surviving steamer with the Young valve gear. So, once the restoration of the 5511 begins after the 3985, hopefully the current carrying parts of the valve gear are in decent shape. Once the 3985 and 5511 are finished, they will make awesome double headers. I also can't wait for the 6936 to be running either. It's the largest diesel ever built and it's essentially the diesel version of the big boy. So, once these locomotives are up and running, I hope to take a trip to see them run especially the 3985 and 5511. I would like to see the valve gear in action on the 5511 some day. 5511 is a nice engine and I'm glad it's being restored.

Whats the plan for the centennial diesel though? I assume it wouldn't be too hard to get that beasts prime movers up and running again.

@robertf3479
@robertf3479 Год назад
As I understand it, the prime movers for the Centennial should be in good shape though a tear down and inspection for both would be in order. The issue for the DD40A is actually the trucks and electronics, the trucks have enough mileage on them they are in bad need of a rebuild, they are more or less worn out as are the electronics.
@rearspeaker6364
@rearspeaker6364 Год назад
@@robertf3479 the electronics are standard GP40-2 modules, just has 2 of every module, now those trucks can be rebuilt.

It will definitely run again. I don't know how much work it needs considering that it hasn't ran since 2016, but I'm confident that it won't be difficult to get it running again.

So many people that visited the UP heritage Roundhouse always wanted to know if these engines would ever get another chance and they were told there could be a time and that time came when they came to Silvis on a donation.

Right now, restoration efforts are focusing on Challenger 3985 first, and then work will go towards 5511.

No doubt in my mind donated for the tax write off. The railroads never make a move that it thinks will not bring it profit. Nevertheless, it's nice to see these units potentially restored.

Dont forget they spent a fortune rebuilding the Big Boy! This way 3985 will run again, and UP doesn't foot the bill for that plus the 5511. Win, win for everybody.

Will it take until 2030 to get 3985 back in service?
@davidng2336
@davidng2336 Год назад
Potentially faster depending on donations. But keep in mind that 3985 needs a major rebuild and this is a non-profit organization. So I bet it will take longer for 3985 to return. The other issue is that 4014's tender must be converted to oil before 3985 runs again, as 4014 is currently still using 3985's tender.
@SouRwy4501Productions
@SouRwy4501Productions Год назад
It might. It took 4 years for 4014 to get back in service, even though he was being restored by the largest railroad in the United States, so it would probably take even longer for them to get 3985 running.
@jwrailve3615
@jwrailve3615 Год назад
4-6 years for the first to be restored is my guess, I’d assume 3936 would be tackled first as there’s a lot they can do, with 5511 it’ll be entirely rebuilt, but I’d assume it’d still take less time than 3985. I just want 4014 and 3936 as the worlds largest tour. 3985 should run it’s own excursion and I could really see 5511 doing mid American tours,

Would y'all like to know something scary? There are fewer historical capital ships (Battleships/BB's & Carriers/CV's) from both World Wars that are museums today, than are trains donated in that PR stunt. Scrap 'em and use the steel to build a replica carrier, to right the crime of scrapping the most important ship of ww2 in the pacific: Enterprise CV-6.
@robertf3479
@robertf3479 Год назад
Even if you were able to do such a thing, the ship you built would be nothing more than a MODEL of the CV-6, full scale granted but NOT the Enterprise.
