You've heard the familiar stories about Fort Collins but much of our community's history, specifically the narratives of historically marginalized groups, has often been overlooked. Join us as we explore the full stories of Fort Collins past-in this first edition, we follow the early experiences of Black settlers in Fort Collins, as well as community leaders and organizations who made the necessary push for civil rights.
The Full Story Fort Collins project is a collaboration between the City’s Communications & Public Involvement Office and Historic Preservation Services.

This was a great presentation. The next time you do one, maybe you can do one for native Americans who are truly the real repressed people in America..

In the photo of 5 people that appears at 3:56 to 4:02 in the video, the man in the lower left corner is Charles Cousins of Denver, CO. The man in the upper right Center is Claude Murray, and the woman in the lower right corner is his wife, Dale Murray. The Murrays were also residents of Denver, CO at the time that this photo was taken in 1965, but had been residents of Fort Collins, CO for a time in the 1930s. In the photo that appears in the video at 4:23 to 4:29, the light blue house immediately to the left of the Thomas house is 310 Cherry Street, and was the Murrays' home in Fort Collins.

That's definitely (not probably) the 100 block of Linden street. And Charley Clay (who we really should name a street after since most of the other early pioneers got a street named after them) was saving up money to buy his freedom, but before he had saved up the full amount, Major General John C. Frémont declared all of Missouri's slaves to be free, a declaration that President Lincoln quickly rescinded lest Northern supporters drop their support of the war against the South. Lincoln didn't declare America's enslaved populations to be free until 2-years later, by which point Charley was already living the Colorado/Wyoming area.

I really enjoyed your presentation. The facts without the present destructive horrific blmn is what we need more of. We also need more of what are former Secretary of State the first black woman to be Secretary of State but because she was Hadley dismissed and ignored NBC and CBS ABC Etc read a wonderful book called extraordinary Ordinary People which chronicled the fact that even though there was segregation in the south black people had a thriving culture based on family. Until then we're told they could grow up to be anything they wanted to be including president it is so horrible that all the gets the megaphone in the microphone are the disgusting leaders like Maxine Waters and the not very not very Reverend Al Sharpton. I am of Italian Heritage and rocks were thrown at the boat at Staten Island when in 1903 my grandfather immigrated from Italy they did not want those dirty Italians coming to the US Margaret Sanger the hero of Democrats set out to make sure that they were less of those kind of people, including African-Americans by placing Planned Parenthood centers throughout inner cities where minority people worked and lived and struggled. Why do black people vote for Democrats I don't understand and it's always been the Republicans throughout history and starting with Lincoln who have supported civil rights. It is an enigma to me ignorance the evil tyrannical people are and have been throughout history in this country.

And yet still, nothing has changed for the group that have dealt with the greatest discrimination in this city from the beginning all the way to today. The poor and homeless are truly the ones ones who have been, and continue to be, discriminated against and their stories swept under the rug. It’s how we know humanity hasn’t changed one bit. Glad all the other races as well as the sexually deviant have found acceptance though. Way to go FOCO!
