It's time to really give this slow travel thing a real, actual try. Chiang Mai seemed like the absolutely perfect place to do so, and so far, the differences between our previous way of living - moving from place to place every few days - has left us tired, and well, quite a bit out of shape. We needed a break, a bit of time get our health back and do things a bit differently. This is exactly what we needed.

Talking to fellow nomads and long-term travelers, I've found the best length of time for me is 60-90 days in one location. Most visa-exempt stamps are 1-3 months, and you can usually extend it pretty easily, or do a visa-run. It gives you time to setup a "base"/"home", get lower long-term stay prices, find favorite cafes/restaurants/neighborhoods, make friends. It allows you to get some comforts of home, too. Non-Airbnbs usually price leases at 1,3,6,12 months. Then, I take trips from my base for a "weekend" (depending on your work - this could be the middle of the week). If you find yourself turning your life into true nomad-life, I often store a couple boxes at a friend's place or storage facility, like having an appliance like a small oven. Then you can travel based on the weather / season. The goal for me is to eventually have multiple homes and 3-4 months at each location. Also, build into your budget certain "throw-away" expenses. I often shop at second-hand stores for home items, or clothing. Then I give it away when I leave each location. I know you're on a budget now, but when your rent for a room in a fabulous condo at a place in Malaysia / Thailand, etc is $120/month, storing your stuff there and traveling as you want is reasonable. Enjoy your time!

Great video. It’s important to think about these types of issues when travelling. My wife and I normally lose weight on holidays, although; we have never been on a 6 month holiday.

Love your video . My method to eating healthy is to not eat less but swiching the things you eat. Each meal try eat lots of fruits first. It fills you up and as you try to eat less carb it helps you lose weights. When eat out, you could find boil chicken in every chicken rice food stall for cheap lean protein when you travel. Just ask for a plate for only chicken without skin(ไก่หนึ่งจานไม่เอาหนัง kai neung jaan mai aow nang). Normal practice in Thailand.

great tips! and thank you for how to order chicken without skin--this is really helpful!

I lost 2kilos very quickly, just by skipping breakfast and just eating less for around 2 or 3 days, couldn’t believe how easy it was! That was about 3 months ago and since then lost another 2 kilos just by eating less, I keep up an exercise routine and always try and eat healthy! I’am about a similar size to you and now my weight is 172lbs 👍

Love this for you both!! 🥰 TOPS & RIMPING are expensive, they do however have a lot of International Foods. I never buy fruit & veges from there though. Makro often has great deals too. Wishing you health & happiness. 🤗

We're just finishing up 5 weeks in Chiang Mai. The "western" supermarkets are definitely more expensive. One trip there to stock up is all you need. We bought all our perishables at local markets. And yes, it's definitely cheaper (and easier) to eat out.
@LisaAndJosh

That's awesome! Yes, we went to the closest one we could find, but we now found a Lotus near the river that we love and do our produce shopping at the markets :) Hope you enjoyed your time here!

You asked about an easy method for weight loss. And since we have been following you for quite a while now on your world-trip, actually one method springs to mind. We have been suprised at the amount of carbs you eat. Bread, pasta, noodles, potatoes. We ourselves have been succesfully following a diet that limits the amount of carbs in favour of vegetables. it is easy to follow, just eat half the amount of carbs you used to (less bread, noodles, take vegetables as a snack instead of baked goods) and replace them with vegetables. Since you plan to do your own cooking this should be practical. And when eating out (or in a market like you do a lot) then just leave the noodles and eat the sauce with the vegetables.

great observation! we do love those carbs and find it hard to reduce. we just bought 5 bags of fresh local produce and are so excited!

Hi, you two. If you want to lose weight may be you should consider joining a Muaythai club. It's very aerobic, so you should be able to burn some fat and gain some muscle and agility as a bonus. Plus, you might be able to protect yourselves somewhat in a threatening situation one day.
@LisaAndJosh

great idea! we've been wanting to try a muay thai class. our gym. has boxing, but we haven't tried it yet. It looks fun and you're right, offers a lot of skill!

Trying to explain to americans that groceries are expensive in Asia is hopeless. America is the most expensive place! Yes it's cheaper to eat out, but your waistline will pay. I don't eat at street stalls and I buy $10 salads in Bangkok. Same price everywhere for good health. East Asians are horribly unhealthy too. No exercise, high rates of diabetes.
@LisaAndJosh
@LisaAndJosh 2 года назад
yeah we found it hard to eat anything that had a vegetable even near it while we were in thailand - most food was very fried, probably to ensure it's safety to eat. our budget won't let us eat too healthy as a result - thailand was definitely an unhealthy place for us food-wise
