This is the only build I have seen where they were smart and insulated the floor 1st. It will be so much more comfortable in extreme temps outside.
@uglysjourney

You are absolutely right. 👍 It is very comfortable. We had temperatures around freezing / 0°c, and inside, without heating, it stayed 16°c. At night that is perfect for sleeping. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! ❤️👍

Oh my god! The idea of using foam for the Outbound windows is genius! I was building very heavy wooden frames. I like this a lot!

Oh, Wow, these comments are very nice to get. Thanks! I searched, but did not find it, do you have a RU-vid channel as well?
@mrt5393

That’s actually fairly common in Europe. Windows mostly held in place by foam and metal strips at least for brick walls. That probably insulates the windows from the colder stone and heat isn’t transferring. Wood would be a barrier too just heavier I guess
@uglysjourney
@uglysjourney Месяц назад
Yep 👍😄 And I did use massive amounts of glue to stick the window to the frame. Indeed foam is for insulation. This just to be sure and I do not get sued for false information or anything 🫣

Love this build, and look forward to the finish article. The way the world is at the moment, this is perfect to just get away from it all. This is what my aim has been for a few years now, and i watch a lot of builds. So keep up the great work and safe travels, 👍 from the uk.

Yeah, you are right, it is a nice house without mortgage or rent! Quite a few have said it before, but to be honest we did not make it to "get away". For us this is just a new phase in our lives, looking for something more, something else then just working 9 to 5 and paying +50% of our income to rent/mortgage. Now we have less income, but we also need less. But we get so much in return. Thanks for your kind comment ❤️👍, and we hope to see you with the next video!

❤️ Comments like these help me to continue. Thank you! A bare container is terrible in regards to insulation. And I wanted it to be OK for living between -10 and +30. And now it does, without airco, but with heating 👍. See you in two weeks!

@uglysjourney 2 месяца назад
Thank you, that is great support! And you are right, more windows (or bigger) would have been nice. I made this choice based on costs. Doors and windows now cost over €10k, which was quite a lot for me. And over 10% of total costs. 🚚💰💰 In hindsight, 1 window more, would be better.....

Do you have some type of air filtration set up? As airtight as it looks you need clean air in it. There will be alot of humidity in the air from your breath,getting into the walls and woodwork. I guess you could leave a window cracked open or maybe the skylight. Also a container would make a great cooler and freezer. The survivalists would love this.
@uglysjourney
@uglysjourney 2 месяца назад
Wow, those are quite a few great comment and questions packed in a "short" text. Amazing, love it, thanks! There is no air filtration, we open windows, we have a CO2 sensor (never rang) and our heater uses the "moist" inside air and transports it outside. Also a home-weather station, which measures humidity, always a smiley face there, so it should all be fine. You are the second to comment on humidity and clean air. So there should be a link, a reason or deeper thought behind it. Do you know what it is? And yeah, I have talked to a couple of "preppers" who were very interested indeed. Thanks for your message and apologies for the long reply 🫣👍❤️

Tip, rather than using expensive props to hold timber to the ceiling while the glue drys, just use a long piece of timber on an angle. Knock it in place with a hammer and it will act like a wedge between the floor and the piece you're gluing to the ceiling.

The only issue I have with this build is using a Conex box is the weight. This will impact the milage and suspension as well as the acceleration and breaking. Could have used a lighter solution then a steel box. I understand it is more convent and possibly a little cheaper but still so much heavier than this build needed to be.
@uglysjourney
@uglysjourney 4 дня назад
Yeah, thanks for your thoughts! And indeed the container makes us about 10% heavier than we could be. I do not think that is much especially when I factor in what it all gives back ❤️👍. Coming week I will post a comparison video with the Earthroamer SX (same weight class and dimensions). You will be surprised when we compare it 😄😄

Thank you, like the comment a lot. ❤️❤️ And that is because I have had "headache" enough for thinking whether I wanted a "pass-through" or not. I still can have one, the design is ready for it. But I cannot decide on this one. What I have learned is that the pass-through has to be really easy to use. Otherwise people do not use it. For now it is no issue, we do not feel like we miss it... 👍🫣 Anyway thanks for your thoughts and support! Hope to see you later! ❤️

impressive build. just one remark if that platform in the back is supposed to be for a bed later on you should cut some slots into this so the mattress that goes on top of this has ventilation from below otherwise it will get moldy under the mattress.
@uglysjourney
@uglysjourney Месяц назад
Thank you! And always nice to hear constructive feedback! ❤️👍. I understand what you say and know some "horror-mold-stories". We solved it by having a few gaps below the matrass (not much indeed). So we added a "hospital-cover" over the main matrass. That will prevent moisture from reaching matrass 😄👍 we keep an eye on it and till now all is fine.

Everytime I see a shipping container build I wonder what its really like in the coldest and hottest months to live in with all that steel conducting the temperature into the space? Would like an update about it once you move in for a while. I built something very similar and been living in it 4 years now and will never go back to a regular house, you won't regret it. Even if your heating a cooling bills are off the charts :) You went to a lot of effort to put a deck on the roof, are you not putting solar up there?
@uglysjourney
@uglysjourney 2 месяца назад
You will not believe how comfortable it is inside the container! With the sun blasting it stays nice in there until around 16.00 hour. After that it is the same temperature as outside. But I understand your wonder, without isolation it would have been unbearable inside. And the roof also functions as an umbrella. Architects tell me that thats the best way to keep it cool inside. There will be solar panels, but I have a trick up my sleeve. But that is a story for next time 🫣😄👍👋 Thanks for you comment and support! ❤️

Just glue the foam sheets on the sea container then the wood the foam has the compressive strength on the floor it does not compress between the timber it just needs support at the entrance. Same with the walls and ceiling use glue not spray foam they glue aircraft together. Better insulation, cheaper, quicker. Same with the walls and ceiling It is how SIPs structural insulated panels are made and they work well. No need to make little individual ones with poor insulating expensive wood between each small one. Or save the work and just use SIPs it is the same price as the sea container for new panels their are joiners designed for 90 degrees and corners the panels are custom made with no cutting needed. I convert buses so am stuck with the wall and ceiling frame but just add foam and ply to the floor with a strip of timber at the front step thats all, thicker flooring can be used if needed with all the money saved and cupboards attached to it. I use a bus as they are mobile with a cheap permit and stealth if you leave the outside stock none of that applies to a sea contained with holes for windows.
@uglysjourney
@uglysjourney 2 месяца назад
Many thanks for you very elaborate explanation. I understand you refer to "sandwich panels", right? Is a proven concept ofcourse. My issue with that approach was the difficulty of attaching anything to the foam sheets. How would I hang the wood wall cladding? Hope you have some time for a reaction. In any way thanks for support! ❤️👍

How's the condensation? Boards that are in direct contact with the metal will get wet and grow mold.
@uglysjourney
@uglysjourney 2 месяца назад
Hi Vladd, thanks for your concern! 👍😄 I think you are talking about a cold-bridge. When the difference between inside and outside temperatures is very large. I.e. Inside +20°c, outside -10°c. Then water will form on the inside. Like a cold can of coke in summer. To prevent a cold-bridge the insulation needs to be thick or good enough. My insulation is good enough for temperatures around -10°c. So there is no issue with condensation yet. Except 1 point and that is the handle of the Outbound door. That gets extremely wet, it has a cold-bridge (poor design by them). Hope this helps! Please let me know? ❤️👍

The insulation can be done on the outside. Why waste the space inside?

How much heavier do you think this approach is compared to common alternatives?
@uglysjourney
@uglysjourney 2 месяца назад
Thanks for your question! I think I understand why you would ask it. Before I answer I need to say this, I am from Europe and use Kilogram in my answers. The truck can carry 12 tonnes (kg). It is 12 tonnes. A conventional plastic sandwich panel EU camper weighs around 3 tonnes. A true overlanding truck will be about the same if not heavier. The thing is that I have used a relatively small truck for the weight, I would like to have a bigger/stronger truck. Hope this helps, if not please feel free to let me know. Thanks! 👍👋

Great video! Maybe a stupid question, but how is the container fixed to the chassis? Would it glide to the front and crushing the cabine when there is a front facing accident?
@uglysjourney
@uglysjourney 2 месяца назад
Hi Bram, good question on security, thanks! The container is fixed using twist-locks. These are designed to hold the container in place and be manually operated (twisted). Second the sub-chassis "curves" up and sits as well between the cab and the container, effectively "protecting" the driver. 🚚 This last system is not used in all container trucks, I have heard of a couple of deaths in the way you describe it. It "always" happens like this: it is busy, but not overly so. Suddenly a traffic jam starts. There is a heavy truck in front. The fatal accident truck stops relatively close to the truck in front. And behind a heavy truck in full speed hits the fatal accident truck. Driver has no chance, sandwiched between his container and the truck in front. So yeah, good point and thanks for the compliment. Does this help you? ❤️👍

Nice, have few questions. 1. Is there housing shortage in Germany? 2. Wont this container house give you a claustrophobic feeling? 3. Do you have to pay municipal taxes for such mobile house? 4. Can an untrained/non engineer person do all these activities? Apartly I like the device to apply adhesive/gum. It is easy to use.

Hi! Thanks for the questions! 1. We are from the Netherlands and there is a big housing shortage there. In Germany I do not know. 2. No claustrofobic feelings for us, but perhaps for some it might. 3. No taxes, just roadtax. 4. I am untrained and have little to none building experience, so I would say yes😄👍. what would be the advantage(s) of using a container?
@uglysjourney
@uglysjourney 2 месяца назад
Thanks for your question! For me the benefits of a shipping container: 1. That it is "plug & play" on the truck. 2. That it is strong, easy to build in and on it. 3. I can take it of, it can be a tiny house or placed on another truck.

Interesting approach, i am wondering why you made a tounge and groove box inside, but no plumbing or electrical in the walls? Normally in a house you lay down under floor heating, hvac, plumbing, electrical and ventilation. Then clad, as this is a sealed system now and sleeping in it your CO2 levels are going to be an issue, sure you can open a window, ok if its 15-20°C but a missed opportunity given a shipping container is robust enough for being submerged at sea.
@uglysjourney
@uglysjourney 2 месяца назад
Hi thanks for your opinion and comment! To answer your question I could ask you to watch next weeks video, but will not do that. I will use a raised floor and internal walls to route everything. First this helps with accessibility (not so experienced, so can correct mistakes), but also enables me to build without an exact plan/lay-out. And second I wanted to have the insulation 100% intact. All in all quite happy with the results! The CO2 comment I do not understand. Can you explain/elaborate a bit? How is this container different than a room in a house for instance. Like to hear what you say, so please let me know! Cheers for the support and comments!! 👍👍🍻
@fraserwright9482
@fraserwright9482 2 месяца назад
Your own home has ventilation as part of its construction to reduce mold, damp and remain habitable, hopefully your house is not 6x2.5sqm A container is a steel box designed for cargo at sea and you are having 4 or 5 people inside a sealed box. Great for insulation, but a bit like breathing into a paper bag you raise the Carbon dioxide levels above what is normal.
@uglysjourney
@uglysjourney 2 месяца назад
When you keep everything shut yes, then you are right. But why would we keep everything shut? Even in cold temperatures we have windows open, works very well. And added to that we have a heating system that uses the "damp" inside air and blows that out of the box. All in all we are very happy and so is our temperature/home-weather-station, monitors inside humidity as well, always well within normal. Hope this helps and if not, then lets agree to disagree. Have a good day! 👍❤️

@uglysjourney
@uglysjourney 2 месяца назад
@chaosncheckt9356 thanks for asking! The max weight is 12 tons, so it is loaded to the max. We take the truck to bumpy gravel roads and sandy beaches. Not extreme, but yeah, who wants to take their home on a 20% muddy incline with a chance of tipping over? Not many I presume? 😉👍 Can you say why you ask about off road readiness?
@chaosncheckt9356
@chaosncheckt9356 2 месяца назад
@@uglysjourney The design, truck body, thorough insulation, and robust solar for power, would have made it an awesome all season off road rig. In the States we refer to off road camping as boon docking, so our rigs are self contained. If it weren’t for the weight, you could probably get it to some pretty remote areas. My worry at 12 tons would be getting on rough roads and breaking something. Still, a sweet rig especially if you can swap it to other trucks or even onto land. I would imagine your fuel miles are pretty terrifying.
@uglysjourney
@uglysjourney 2 месяца назад
Thanks for explaining to me! And you are right! We live in it full-time and we stay off-grid always. We can even make our own drinking water from almost any source. Only diesel is needed....and in that aspect you are right as well, but it is does a bit better than the Earthroamer for example. We do 12 MPG (5 liter per km).🫣 Some day we hope to take a step up and have a stronger vehicle....🤞🤞 Do you own a expedition truck?
