House Atreides can trace its lineage back to ancient Greece. Though the Expanded Dune Universe by Brian Herbert and Kevin J Anderson offers some contradicting dates and accounts to the Dune Encyclopedia the Encyclopedia provides the most comprehensive timeline of the Dune universe. Though in the Original Frank Herbert Dune books Earth is lost in the midst of time the encyclopedia offers dates stretching all the way from humanities early beginnings on Earth to a few thousand years after the death of the God Emperor Leto the Second, up until the in-universe publication of the encyclopedia itself in 15540 AG.

"First Reverend mother" is also spelled wrong. Also, as I've posted before, You should think about another way to present art credits. Perhaps the title and artist right under each illustration rather than a list at the end. Links straight to uploads of these illustrations in the description would also work well and be very little work for you. Otherwise, HUGE fan of the channel and this video is one of my favorites so far.

@@hammer326 Don't confuse "wild Reverend Mother" with the Bene Gesserit. According to the Encyclopedia, Jehanne Butler was part of the Bene Gesserit breeding program, and her daughter (the aborted Sarah Butler whose death was the catalyst for the Jihad) would have been the mother of the Kwisatz Haderach.

@@lucaskp16 Oh come on, 7 and 8 were not actually bad. The problem with those books are just that if you are used to the style of Frank himself you have problems with Anderson and Herberts son. I read the original books and thought they are very exotic because the emphasis on philosophy from Frank is extraordinary big, his son wrote like most scifi stories are today: direct and very plastic. But to say the writing of Herberts son is bad just gives Dune fans the image of ultra closeminded fanatics.

Humanity on earth (as modern humans) has been alive from 100 000. For example, 40 000 years ago humans arrived in Europe. The Pyramids were built 5000 years ago. The foundation of Athens was 3500 years ago and that of rome 2750 years ago with its subsequent fall 1500 years ago. Then the discovery of America happened 630 years ago and the American colonies where founded 350 years ago. WW II was just 80 years ago.

What’s terrifying to me is how long 34,000 years feels in the Dune universe. And yet we know humans have existed probably 200,000 years longer than that; all of that history is lost to us. The more I learn about Dune, the more I am convinced that Frank Herbert is one of the greatest writers in history. The detail in the world, the complex political plots, the multi-dimensional characters, and the way all of these combine to convey themes is something that few other authors have pulled off. It’s even more impressive when you consider he basically invented modern science fiction.
@DrWhom

I don't think so. The prose is often jejune and clumsy. He is great at building up political tension with lots of people and factions second-guessing one another, but he has no sense of combat and once conflicts come to a head, things are abruptly halted by some lazy deus ex machina.

That may happen IRL eventually. First as humanity expands into the solar system - settling on terraformed Mars and Venus (again, not a guarantee, but a potentiality), living by the millions in the Asteroid and Kuiper Belts as well as the Oort Cloud, and perhaps in their billions on space habitats like O'Neill Cylinders. Earth would still be the centre of humanity of course, but that would be the beginning. If/when we leave the solar system and begin voyages into the "nearby" star systems, we will see millions/billions more leave - whether motivated by scientific/economic reasons or simply for the sake of land and exploration. But eventually Earth would become more of a symbolic centre than anything, and likely the vast majority of people would eventually live outside of it. I think it would be quite nice though - to imagine a future where humanity has colonised 10 star systems and spans tens, if not hundreds, of billions of people, with Earth at the centre with a remaining core population of like 2 billion just chilling

AI can already create pictures and 1 minute video with promps and recreate voices and faces, also fill in story and create story. So I would think it's safe to assume being generous as in ignoring the exponential increase in development but a slow one in 15-20 years we'll have this for sure if not in 5-10. Lots of old tv shows will be easily revived with AI re-creating the old characters and their voices and perhaps the plot of the show itself soon enough and it will be cheap because it will only be royalties for the estates of the people, no paying for actors or special effects or sets or anything and studios will likely already own the rights to the IP so won't even have to pay for that. It’s entirely possible none of the “empires” until the “current” one were actually empires. “Seat of Imperial Power” in the article seems to refer to broad hegemony rather than actually being an empire. The Cold War is referred too as a “conflict between House Washington and House Steel” (America and Soviet Russia, Stalin means “Man of Steel”) after “House Windsor” (England) loses their Imperium. The in-universe writers of the encyclopedia are interpreting the past through their own present (like historians always do). Anyway. Everyone read the encyclopedia. It’s amazing.

Want to really contextualize this in an even more mind crushing perspective? The human species is still older than this timeline, and the dinosaurs vanished 1900 times longer ago than this duration. The dinosaurs lived for over 4000 times this duration. It is entirely conceivable a civilization could rise and vanish to the stars in the time between the dinosaurs and the rise of our own. Plug that back into the context of the earth being set aside as a nature preserve and then lost. Is Dune really the saga of our lost ancestors?

Every time I see any intergalactic show or movie and notice aliens with basically the same anatomy as humans, it was always slightly irritating but this universe had a very logistical reason. I love how it’s supposed to be our universe just really far into the future and how we never encountered any Aliens gave it a rich sense of realism. Every time there is mention of The Guild, I know Frank Herbert’s meant “The Lollipop Guild”. It is a little known fact bur the Dune Universe Intersects with the Wizard of Oz universe and “The Lollipop Guild” has performed experiments utilizing the human mind’s ability to teleport to different places and dimensions when exposed to psychedelics for millennia. Many thousands of years after the events depicted in the movie and when they had perfected the technique, they decided to bring their activities out of the shadows; at that time the name was simply shortened to “The Guild”, as there were no humans who remembered what a “lollipop” actually was.

I can only dream. And even then it would be based off the first book again. A brilliant story as it is, I love the dune universe and wish there'd be games set in different times than just dune1

I'm thinking some sort of open-universe Dune game with both couch-co-op and online-co-op, like No-Man's Sky and Haven: Call Of The King put together

Its safe to say 40k has been heavily inspired by Dune. But i personally feel like 40k is a giant passionate melting pot of bolters, chaos and a whole lot of heresy.
