Yes, Once 51's were at strength a new category was added to the groups concerning maintenance - Structure failure. The wings are bolted to the airframe and not part of it. Which is a weakness. Mustangs were not completing their combat hours before being retired as "War weary" and sent back to third shop for new wings. Col. Zemke, while flying home from a mission entered a small storm over Germany and had his wings ripped off. No one learned of this until he was liberated from the Stalag Luft. camp. USAAF stopped flying 51's over the "Hump" in the CBU due to losses. Only when a few pilots survived after bailouts were the commanders made aware of the situation. The strong mountain winds were causing pilots to lose control, and then wings. When Gen. LeMay {future leader of SAC} took over 8th AF in Europe he got rid of the 51's and kept the 47's due to this issue, plus the 47's could carry more, less maintenance, and flew faster with the later model R-2800's. He had all D-30's and later overhauled and updated to carry the latest HVAR's. Even the Mustangs greatest gift "Range" was actually met {47's were over Berlin first} and then surpassed by the 47. The "N" model {serving only in the PTO} had a longer range, heavier weapons load, and is faster than the 51. People just believe the propaganda. Like the old pilot saying goes, "Want to impress your girlfriend have your picture taken in front of a Mustang, want to let your parents know you're safe, have your picture taken in front of a Thunderbolt.

Anj Kovo me to, I am also 56 and know exactly what you mean, even the small town I lived in had a model/toy shop, but the owner was a great guy and was always happy to help with advice and assistance. Fantastic days.

@@allandavis8201 Lovely sentiments. I used to save up my pocket money and when i had enough i'd run to the model shop and also the owner was a great guy with enthusiasm in helping me pick out a great kit and the paints i needed. Like you say FANTASTIC DAYS

49 here and recently rediscovered modelling. We’ve a great shop in Galway, the owner is a wonderful guy that can source all our products. I’m a lot more patient with them now though! 😂

I’m 13 and pretty new to the hobby just sad I have to drive an hour to go to a hobby shop

Not really. Nothing more boring than watching someone build a model kit.

I felt the same way when I did my first build in 40 years. I started with a Sherman M3 tank like the one my father drove down the Scheld and into Holland.

Met her in Bottisham Cambridgeshire a few years ago when she visited her fathers old base to open a new road named after him,she sadly died of cancer later.

Tamiya is overpriced trash. I'll agree that Revell is trash except for a handful of new tools. Takom, Hobby Boss, DML all make Tamiya look like Revell.
