Funny thing is, every time I rewatch it, it actually becomes harder not to cry. I watched this series for the first time when I was a teenager. I loved it, but I didn't fully understand the layers that it has. I think this is the halmark of a great series, it becomes better and better on every rewatch.

in the manga how you may know when a character dies, we see them going to heaven (or hell in the case of tucker), but in this moment when hohenheim dies, we see a scene in which hohenheim finally reunite with trisha and hohenheim tells to trisha that ed called him dad and that he could also shake hands with the real Al, and in the end trisha ask "if everything is fine, then?", and hohenheims replays "yes, our work is done, they have many people who can help them and support them", it is a beautiful moment, like always a splendid reaction girls, we are in the end of this journey now, it was amazing to see, so thank you.

@felipeaquitral
@felipeaquitral 4 года назад
Yes, but "THE answer" was "there's nothing wrong with being human", humans are flawed beings. What's wrong is seeking perfection when it's impossible, trying to get rid off of your humanity (or, in Father's case, your human origin) forgetting everything that makes you human only for the sake of getting more power/knowledge (that's what almost every Homunculi realized in the end, that they weren't perfect). That's why the Dwarf's door was blank, he didn't learned anything in the sense that all his knowledge and power were obtained just for the sake of getting more power and knowledge. He didn't make friends, he didn't learn from his mistakes, his "journey" from a Dwarf in Xerxes to a god-like being in Amestris was completely pointless and empty. He wanted freedom, there's nothing wrong with that (Hohenheim also wanted that, that's why he gave that look to Father when he was being dragged to the portal), but you can't go against your nature. Ed understood that, he understood that he was just a human from the beginning. That it was impossible to save Trisha and that he was helpless to save Nina. A human has to be humble like Ed and Al (and Hohenheim), not prideful like Father and the Homunculi. At least that's what I get from Arakawa's philosophy.

Ed definitely still has his automail leg. It's his sacrifice from his sin of human transmutation. He's the type who can accept and deal with the consequences of his mistakes, as we've seen throughout the series. Not only that, he also took on the burden of Al's sin, giving up his alchemy in exchange for Al's sacrifice, since he sees himself as responsible for getting Al involved. Also, Hohenheim's death will never not make me cry.

It's ok, I've watched this series 100 times, and always tear up at this part. Did you notice in the end credits which is honoring Hohenheim, for a split second in it you see all the people of Xerxes like happy and proud at Hohenheim for what he has done(one could imagine maybe they are welcoming Hohenheim in the afterlife and also Trisha putting her hand out). I don't know why but that picture for me turns it the greatest sendoff ever. Also playing Rain in the end, its like the music was made for Hohenheim.

the dwarf in the flask homonculus; a being born of man with all of the flaws that came with; one who manipulated others with a lust for power and immortality that he shared, who glutinously gobbled up resources with little thought of their value, who refused to acnoledge how much he envied the humans for the bonds they made with one another, too slothfull to consider or care if there was any other way to go about his life, too prideful to see what he had in common with humans, and so greedy as to want no less than the world in his grasp. Rather than learn and improve on himself he attempted to cast his flaws away, becoming a shadow of himself. Now he stands before the truth with a blank gateway. He will now pay in equal measure for all the things he has taken away from the world, as is instated by the law of equivalent exchange

Thanks your your reactions. As you know, most homunculi has died in the way of opposite of their sins. Greed died in a selfless death by sacrifice himself. Greed always wants friends and family. This is hinted that in his former life, he left Father and surrounded himself with a bunch of chimeras. Apparently, the old Greed must have been decent to these chimeras because of all them were willing to die for him. In his both life, Greed eventually left Father, and seeked out companions. He may not admit it or realize it, but he always seek friendship.

Now that they are all dead. Check this out. Lust was killed by a womanizer protecting the woman he loved, Gluttony was eaten, Sloth dies from overwork, Pride gives up his pride in being a homunculus and tries taking a human body, Wrath dies calm and happy of the life he's lived, and Greed dies being fulfilled. Not needing anything else.
@SSS-ie6mh
@SSS-ie6mh 4 года назад
Except Mustang wasn't a womanizer, Sloth died from physical damage, not overwork. Greed wasn't fulfilled, he just sacrificed himself. Before Gluttony was eaten, Greed was also "eaten" by Father, so it doesn't really mean anything. Wrath died with both his arms violently amputated, it was anything but a calm death.
@PressEnter42
@PressEnter42 4 года назад
@@SSS-ie6mh Greed literally said "it's enough... Yeah, it's enough. I don't need anything else anymore. Farewell". Fighting is physical activity for Sloth, Warth died saying his life was worth living, that he was happy with it, contempt, at peace with the decisions he made. Something of a smile on his face. Fair enough but Lust did die from a man defending a woman he loved, not one he lusted after. Someone he generally cared about as a person.

It’s interesting how in the end Father couldn’t swallow the Truth. It’s not wrong to search for the Truth or perfection; what you sacrifice to get it is what’s important. Both Father and Edward were able to find the Truth. The one that disagreed with Truth and embraced their pride, poetically couldn’t swallow the Truth. While the other who swallowed their pride was able to embrace the Truth and got what they most desired. From watching the series over and over again, I can only conclude that Truth is Love.

Yeah, Hohenheim's death is much more emotional than Hughes' death. Hughes' death it's more shocking I think and his funeral is very sad (specially because of Elysia and Mustang), but when Hohenheim dies we already love all the characters and have watched them for 63 episodes. It also help the fact that almost everyone hate Hohenheim from the beginning and we learn to love him after we learn his tragic backstory and his mistakes and profound guilt... it's losing a character that made you change your perspective about things. Also, the way Hohenheim's story is told (from Ed's point of view), when it comes to an end is like losing a father. I think that's why (SPOILERS FROM EPISODE 64) . . . they don't need to show us the Elric brothers reaction, because in a way we've already felt it in our own reaction to his death. And yes, I've watched his death on almost every reaction channel and I cry every time xd

No need to apologize for the tears. After Greed and Ed's sacrifice and Hohenheim's dying speech to his wife, I'd be disappointed if there wasn't tears. 😉 A side benefit of Ed giving up his alchemy is he can't be a State Alchemist anymore and potentially be ordered to kill.

I love the scene when Ed sacrifices his Gate. It's easily my favorite bit of the whole series - even more than Mustang vs Lust. I especially love the English dub of it. Truth says to Ed: "You've done it, that's the right answer! Good job, you beat me!" And the way Truth says it makes it clear it's genuinely HAPPY it was beaten. Edward beats "God" with pure fists, and later figuratively, in 1 episode :')

No matter how bad they are (Envy, Father). I love how everyone hates Hohenheim at the beginning and in the end, everyone likes him. I also love how the ending goes. The answer to the riddle is staring you in the face. It is behind you. You face it and see a giant eye, like it is saying, "Look" or "I am staring you in the face." Ah...another thing I just thought of. Ed got his arm back, but what happened to his leg? When "the one" disappeared, did Ed's leg go with him or did Ed just step over it or something? Kind of an Eww thought there.

I always took it as Ed accepting his limits as a human being who can't pursue the absolute truth because of his imperfect nature. By giving away his truth, he's not only giving up alchemy, but also the drive to reach the complete knowledge that has guided him his whole life. He's the only alchemist who performed human transmutation and truly understood what he did wrong, thus being able to correct his mistake.

I think what really hits about Father's fate is his absolutely inability to understand what he did wrong and as such he is dragged into the gate only crying for himself and his failure. Meanwhile the other homoculii the sins / desires he tried to remove didn't do that. Looking at both Pride and Greed in particular, when Pride believed he was going to die he thought of his parents and when Greed died he thought of his friends. Even Gluttony cried out for Lust as he died. Others have pointed out that Father really failed to remove his sins, and Truth even mocks him for that. Hohenheim tries to tell Father he removed something important and that was the ability to understand himself. Father wanted friends, community, and family, but instead of acknowledging that or coming to understand his true desires he sought god and was punished for it and could only cry for himself because he had no one else to cry for.

Don't worry you aren't the only one. I really love the moral of this show, it's consistent from the beginning to the end. Many others would have indeed sacrified Hohenheim as he is the easy solution (in a narrative way, I mean), but Ed's alchemy is so much smarter and more original. It's totally logical though, as alchemy has been shown in the whole story as an incredibly powerful tool that misleaded so many people of what really matter in life (Tucker, Berthold Hawkeye, the gold-tooth doctor and so many scientists), like money and power in our real world. Yet Hohenheim realizing that now he wants to live a bit more, after searching for a way to die for so long, is so frustrating ! This makes his death easily as emotionnal as it would have been if he had sacrified himself for Al. Damn, I love this show !!

What a lesson does this show left us, right? In the end he was a simple man who only wanted a wife and some kids, and that's what gave him purpose to fight back and to live. This is what I love the most of FMA when people realize that no character can be judged only for others visions of them. That no character is black and white, that sometimes the means may be justified if not necessarily condoned. That simple people is anything but simple. R.I.P Van Hohenheim (born a slave, died a dad).

Yeah that's been a problem since the beginning xD her accent makes it hard to understand (she's been trying though ;) recently she's tried to say it more slowly)

Are you gonna watch the 4 OVAs? If there are no plans for reacting at least watch them on your own. They are all great but the 4th (how Mustang and Hughes met) is amazing; as good as any other episode.

We didn't really plan on doing a reaction, but we'll talk about it and see if we have time :D

It would be interesting to see a reaction series to the 2003 version with a comparing and contrasting aspect.

I don't know if we would do a reaction the same way we did for Brotherhood, but a review/discussion?? Maybe :D

@@kyuujinreacts No, don't need to do a reaction, but is worth a watch. Some people get disappointed because the writing/pacing is not as tight, and the tone is more dark/melancholic but it's amazing regardless. Just expect a different experience overall.

Man. It's on another level with original dub. This is the reason why you don't react to anime in English dub. Authority is emitting through every seconds of it

It's always infuriating when a show keeps dropping hints that a character is a good person but people keep insisting that they are a bad person. In this show, the hints came about midway through the show but I know other shows where the character is heavily hinted as a good person but people keep hating on them for as long as possible, many times even after the reveal.

It depends on the character, but I can't help but think that even if a character is good, doesn't really excuse the things he's done :/ (in Hohenheim's case, I feel like we see his story from Ed's point of view until we finally get the truth, so after that it's easy to justify him, but he's still a shitty father ahah xD I love him though)
