That was... the most raw reaction to this episode I've ever seen. Mustang is my favorite character in this show - the way he handles grief over the death of his best friend and the dynamic he has with hawkeye is just so perfect. Something else about that line "it's a terrible day for rain" - remember that gag early on about how Mustang is powerless in the rain? The funeral scene does such an incredible job capturing how Roy feels with that one line.

The "terrible day for rain" line is great but I think it overshadows Roy' rumination on alchemists and the temptation to attempt human transmutation. He's seen what an attempt at human transmutation can do to you, after all, he's seen the Elrics, and he knows that they didn't even get their mom back, and even so, standing in front of Hughes' grave, a part of him is seriously considering taking that risk.

I knew you were gonna bawl your eyes out at this episode, and I don't blame you one bit. FMA is one of those shows that I absolutely love, but it always manages to tear me apart during these moments. Hughes' death shattered me the first time I watched, and Mustang's reaction did too. "It's a terrible day for rain" is a heartbreaking line for two reasons. First, he's saying it because of his tears, which is the obvious implication. However, Mustang is notoriously useless on rainy days, due to the nature of his alchemy. He feels useless during Hughes' funeral, because he couldn't do anything to save his best friend. Even knowing what's coming, I still tear up every time I watch this episode.

There's 2 classic things in this show that almost every anime fan knows even if they haven't watched this show: the talking Chimera, and "It's a terrible day for rain." This show is so good at twisting the knife. They spent so much time in the first 9 episodes building up this seemingly somewhat minor character only to kill him off and make it the catalyst for *so* much. There's no minor characters in this show. They're all important and now they're ALL in danger. The cut between Hughes death, Ed Al and Winry on the train, and then immediately to the funeral is so devilish.

I feel like this is bordering dangerously on being a spoiler. Implying these are the only 2 famous shocking scenes would lead someone believe there aren't any more of these types of scenes in the next 54 episodes... As an older, lifelong anime fan, my first introduction to the FMA universe was the original 2003 anime and I didn't even get a hold of the manga until after I had finished watching all of it. In FMA (2003), Hughes lasts until the 16th episode, and his death is perhaps even MORE crushing, because 2003 added a miniarc where Ed prepares for his state alchemy exam and stays with Hughes and Gracia during that time--and the birth event (which by now you've seen of course, being in the next episode about Rush Valley) was transferred to Gracia giving birth to Elicia ON ED'S 12th BIRTHDAY while the boys were staying with them. Hughes' death was super soul-crushing...and yet, even suspecting it was coming in the canon story, it's hard not to cry every time I read the chapter or watch the episode. One of the very, very saddest deaths in anime/manga history.

It broke my heart when you said, "I have a crush on Hughes" knowing what was about to happen. It was a rough episode for me, too. The best ones never get what they deserve. RIP Hughes.

To lighten the mood a little bit, a story I found in the anniversary book. So, there's a series of companion novels (light novels?) for FMA, not written by the author, but she does oversee the lore and stuff for them(they're not required reading don't worry). Anyways, apparently during one meeting with the author of the novels, the novel author made a comment about liking Hughes (and possibly wanting to do something with Hughes in the next book?). At which point Arakawa-sensei(the manga author) and her editor just went dead silent and started nervously sweating and looking at each other. Because, this whole conversation took place BEFORE Hughes died (it's not specified how far before but it sounded like no more than like, a couple chapters, so it was very close to happening). And the poor novelist was just like 'what's wrong, what's going on, what aren't you telling me?????'. Like, talk about the worst timing ever.

A little detail that I like to think is intentional is when Roy says, "It's a terrible day for rain." he's not just saying it cause he's crying, but because he's useless in a fight in the rain since he can't make a spark for his flame alchemy and right in that moment he felt powerless.

Yeah, this one hits hard. This show does a really good job of going from some silly brother behavior to some of these kinds of episodes that are just BRUTAL.

This episode (both versions of it) have always been especially rough since I became a father. Imagining my own children going through the same thing is completely crushing. The VAs for Elicia in both series and in both languages all did an amazing job.

I think the bits cutting to Ed, Al and Winry are the ones that hurt the most. They demonstrate how the world doesn't just stop just becasue someone died. It goes on and people talk normally about that person, because they don't know. Ed complaining at any other time would have elicited no more than a "Don't be so uptight" with a little smile, but in this context, you suddenl know that he will never be able to tell hughes "Thank you" he won't even be able to say "You spoil your daughtr" or "Jeez I am tired of hearing about how wonderful your wife is" And you just now that their world will come crumbling down too, once they learn.

Roy aspirations to grow in the ranks as he says it's to protect the ones he love and there is a closed loop with Roy aiming to get top rank by himself and Hues reminding him he needs just ask and at the end he immediately asked Hawkeye for help in doing so A definitely emotional episode😢

A lot of reactors get on my nerves when they cry cuz it just doesn't feel, right to me, but watching you spill out those emotions almost makes me cry. It's sick in a way wanting to see those emotions from people but that's why i love watching reaction channels. It's a refreshing thing but tbf, this is usually how i gauge if someone will make it through this series. Once you hit ep 4 and 10, you've hit a mile stone for the series. Nowhere but up from here

That gut-wrenching moment at the end of the last video that makes you wish someone would run in and tell FLG to take a couple days break before watching this one... and knowing it is already too late. I don't think I have ever watched a reaction while standing in the rain, until now.

Lust being difficult to kill was already shown in the manga, during her conversation with Dr. Marcoh. When Lust demanded to know where he hid the stolen research files, she attempted to torture the information out of Marcoh by stabbing him in the shoulder. But Marcoh used his blood to draw a transumation circle, on the wall he was pinned against; causing a massive, stone spike to erupt from the wall and impale Lust through the abdomen. However, Lust simply cut the spike out, and immediately regenerated the damage.

And there it is. The most devastating episode of the series (in my opinion). This episode and the one with the little girl and the dog are the two episodes that make me sob the most, every time without fail. Narratively, Hughes’s death serves an important purpose. It shows the audience that no one is safe. There is no such thing as plot armor in this show, and the bad guys are playing for keeps. They made us love him so that they could take him away and give us that anxiety of “if they can kill Hughes, then who’s next?!” Hughes will always be one of my favorite characters in any media. He was a wonderful husband, a fantastic friend, and a devoted dad. Rest easy, Hughes. 💔❤️‍🩹

The story is good. The storytelling is excellent. And you can already see by the end of the episode how pivotal in Roy's motivation Huges death is. Rewatching through your reactions is really eye-opening about how good the story was, seeing how each moment and action impacts and builds the background story new viewers can't yet realize is there. And if you hate the bad guys now, wait till you've met all the sins. ( insert evil laugh here )
