My name is Jake - and I have been repairing Polaroid cameras for clients professionally as The Instant Camera Guy for over a decade. Need a Polaroid repaired? Feel free to contact me! Links below.
In the second episode of The Instant Camera Guy, we dive deep into one of the most common types of cameras I refurbish - the classic Polaroid SX-70 Model 1.
Like what I do? Feel free to buy me a beer (or two!):
ko-fi.com/thei...
Getting artifacts in the video? For best quality, manually select 1080p quality, as depending on your bandwidth, RU-vid may default to 720p - and RU-vid's 720p compression looks like garbage
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Released in 1972, the original SX-70 was unlike any camera that had ever come before it (and I'd argue nothing has come close to it since!).
A folding SLR capable of taking 3x3" square photos in instantly developing integral film, the SX-70 was truly revolutionary.
Polaroid still make film for this camera to this very day! Often the new film is criticized for producing washed-out - overexposed photos, but this really isn't true. The reason MOST people are getting poor quality photos generally has less to do with modern film - and more to do with the fact that people are using their cameras completely un-refurbished!
A combination of design flaws from the factory plus 40-50 years of wear and tear means that for the best possible results, these cameras must be fully overhauled and repaired if they are to work properly. It is not simply enough to slap a new skin on these cameras and call it a day.
I'd consider the work listed in this video to be the bare minimum required before calling an SX-70 "restored". Don't settle for less.
In this video I dismantle the camera down to its chassis and rebuild it from the ground up, tackling many other repairs along the way, including:
- fixing the front door switch
- removing the brittle driveshaft coupler
- cleaning the electric eye
- removing the anti-static layer from the shutter blades
- trimming the internal rubber baffle to the correct shape
- refurbishing the old worn out motor
- modifying the camera to take 600 format film
- de-skinning the camera
- replacing broken rollers from the front door
and much more!
All film testing, re-skinning and calibration was done off camera for the sake of not boring you to death.

I've had three SLR Polaroid cameras overhauled by TheInstantCameraGuy, and his work is excellent. Most important, he stands behind his products. I had one PCB blow up (a circuit board which is almost 50 years old so understandable) and with zero obligation beyond his word, he moved mountains to correct the problem, and I ended up with an even better restored camera. Huge amounts of pride, honesty and commitment to delivering a real practical solution. Top bloke. Will deal again, and would recommend in strongest terms.

Hey mate, just wanted to thank you for these awesome videos. I purchased a cheap, non-functioning SX-70 model 1 as a practice camera before I overhaul my SX-70 Sonar. I was able to restore basic functionality to the camera after an hour or so of tinkering alongside you in this video. I can't wait to go through the camera completely now!

I found that if you somehow managed to remove the electric eye filter (I tried to soak the joint with DCM, idk did it help) then you can clean it just by dipping in an acid solution

I have an SX-70 which my family originally purchased in 1980's. It works great as far as I know! The only problem I have is the film seems under exposed....pictures turn out very dark. I was told the film one can buy for the SX-70 today does not function as well as the film we used in the 80's. I still have pictures taken by the SX=70 in the 80's that are BRIGHT, beautiful colors! However, the pictures with the film I bought today are dark and dull. Any advice for me? Thanks for the video!

I cannot tell you how happy I am that you now have a RU-vid channel! I love seeing these things repaired, and I've been curious about the process since I got my first SX-70. A few weeks ago I watched your old fb livestream on repairing the pick-off in the SX-70 Sonar / SLR-680. Tried the repair myself, but ended up sending the shutter and sonar assembly to Dr. SX-70 for a repair. The actual camera body and motor are in pretty great shape so I opted for just getting the AF working properly again. Eventually I'll get it CLAed. I've currently got an early '73 Fairchild SX-70, the repaired Sonar, and a model 3. The Fairchild shoots and flashes properly, but it has a decent amount of spots on the final image and the motor sounds a bit tired. I think it needs a good CLA. I haven't tried the Model 3, but I mostly just wanted it for my collection since it's not a proper SLR and I can't go wasting film on an image that's not focused. For now I've limited myself to cleaning electronic eyes, and any dust on the outside of the lens lol. I can't wait to see all the videos you make in the future, happy shooting!

I'd put fixing the optosensor up there among the hardest jobs you can do on an SX-70! All us technicians find it hard! And I still find it tricky to this day! Talk about diving straight into the deep end! Talk about diving straight into the deep end! I rarely cover that topic since I like having full concentration while I do that particular job. I might cover it on the channel should I ever get one to fix

Hey Jake! Just dropping a comment to ask about which plastic body panels can be fully removed from the internals. I'm trying my hand at restoring my SX-70 Alpha SE with your videos to guide me, and wanted to electroplate mine in aluminum. My main concern is the film door. Are ALL plastic shell parts removable without permanent dismantling?

Kinda The issue with the door in particular is the flap etc is heat staked on It's very hard to do

I don't think I will at this stage It's really not hard. Find the old one. Remove it. Replace it. I don't think I can really make the explanation and simpler

this is a wonderful video! It's hard to find videos that thoroughly goes through everything and in such detail I do want to wonder, what glue / type of glue do you use to reapply the leather onto the sx-70? Thanks

Thank you for your kind words. If you like the content, please feel free to share and subscribe, as each follow I get helps this channel during its infancy! leather kits like the one installed here from Hugo Studio are self-adhesive. Generally I prefer to use Aki Asahi skins, but the client provided this skin to me. Aki Asahi is also self adhesive When I salvage original leather, I use Selley's Kwik Grip

I have three tools for this: 1) I use one straight pick for the latch on the side with the pick-arm 2) I use a small flat-head screwdriver with a 45 degree bend for the other side 3) I have years of experience and have done this countless times by now :) Compared to a beginner, I will make everything in these videos look relatively easy. But this is simply because I have the motor memory after thousands of restorations. No different to a musician playing for thousands of hours.
@mickeborgholm
@mickeborgholm 8 месяцев назад
Of course, with all respect, your experience make it look easy! But for us beginners i think a close-up picture/video of the latch would help to understand where to poke :)

I hope no newbies get confused and think that removing the prong means that only I-Type film can be inserted, and not both 600 and I-Type
@theinstantcameraguy
@theinstantcameraguy 8 месяцев назад
nah I don't think so. But to make it clear, removing the tongue is a very helpful thing to do. It means that ANY type of 3x3" size integral film can be used without the cartridge jamming

Yes, aware of that, thanks t you. It's just that when you removed it, you said the one, and not the ond and 600.@@theinstantcameraguy
