This wasn't The Tube, it was the show that replaced it when the first series ended and it was called Switch. It used to be on from 6pm - 7pm Friday, Channel 4.
I agree. I love The Doors, love The Specials, not keen at all on Fun Boy Three (but are any Specials fans?).... This is very strange watchin this tonight. I never knew this existed. I always thought it is totally pointless for anybody to copy a Doors song. I always thought why mess around with such a perfect band's music but I think they did quite well with this here, even though I definitely am not a big fan of Fun Boy Three. It sounds great!
Indeed.. I've still got my FB3 albums , also the Colourfield. I still think that the "Waiting" Lp is a classic. Also really liked 'Virgins & Philistines' from Colourfield, and the Hammond Song.
Excellent! I've wanted to see this ever since a school friend told me I'd missed them playing it as a swan song on the Tube. I was a Doors fanatic at the time, but liked the Fun Boy Three too and couldn't imagine what the two styles colliding would sound like. Suprisingly good it turns out.
I think this was the final song of an episode of "The Tube" channel 4 TV show and the last song ever performed by Fun Boy Three, they split up after the show, only Terry Hall knew, as he ended the bands career...
I had dinner last night with the director, Tony Dow. He told me that the the American flag burning was the way that The Doors always ended the song when performing live- the show was broadcast live and before the credits had even finished, the US embassy were on the 'phone to complain!
they done this as the ladt number when headlining Glastonbury in the 80,s Glaston then supported CND and when the flag was burnt at the end the crowd went wild, oh the good days before Glasto went commercial
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I lost my recording of this 25 years ago and people thought I was nuts whenever I've mentioned it! It was on The Tube.
AWESOME! But then everything Terry Hall touches turns to gold...even one of the greatest songs by The Doors (not saying it beats the original, of course).
As I remember this was live on "The Tube" and they did it because they were splitting up. I saw this live on TV at the time and thought it poignant, especially as they burnt the US flag in protest at Regan's attempt to start WWIII.
just to set 5he record straight once and for all, its NOT from the tube, its from switch 1983 channel 4 friday nights, i know this because i worked there building the stage sets for a year, and that night when that idiot decided to kick the burning flag away it landed on me, hence the crew jumping in with fire extinguishers cause they thought i was going up as well !! .... to be honest so did i
Must've been hard for Neville and Lynval, being seemingly cheery people, to write and perform with that ol' sack of misery.. :D Good take on the Doors, seems fitting at the end of FB3 and TH's illness flaring up
@vintagezigg You're right, you see, The Specials were moving into very interesting territory before their untimely split. But the 'genius' of the Specials wasn't Terry Hall, it was Dammers the organist and songwriter, Zigg. He was marrying ska with hotel lift muzak and Cossack choirs on their 2nd LP and they just broke up and you know, just a waste, 'cos the sum often is greater than any of the parts, from The Beatles to Japan.
The doors are greatly overrated and to be touched by the hand of genius (Mr. Hall) is too good for them..."lizard king" my arse ! Watched this live at the time, it was great then and it's great now. Imagine a yoof tv producer nowadays showing a band and the audience the respect they deserve and scheduling a 9 minute performance ! It just wouldn't happen...
ug some people sholdnt do cover i dont like it one good cover i heard by sound garden like a grunge version of it witch i rely injoyed but i do not injoy this
How 'bout another lame comment to add to the many here and there,Terry has shoegazer hair.Looks like Jim Reid.I like this version, and the original.Nice echo.
Terry: glam Jim: soul FB3 is cool and all, but the original still remains the best version. Adding synthesizers and echo didn't do this any justice either.
This is diabolical. All the menace of the Doors original has been smothered in cheese. "There's danger on the edge of town, ride the kings highway." They sound like they're doing a Fiat Punto advert.
